The Pursuit

Book Forty:  “The Pursuit,” by Johanna Lindsey, Brilliance Audio, 2002, Unabridged, 8 Hours, Read by Michael Page

This story is not a Malory Series novel.

“The Pursuit” is a Regency romance which features a young hero who is the heir to both Scottish and English estates.  The heroine is just 18 years old and is entering her first season in London. She had to leave Scotland to find a husband because her 16 uncles have driven away all the local suitors. The hero and heroine have no siblings.

This is a “love at first sight” story. First, the father agrees to allow the hero to court his daughter. Then her 16 uncles become determined to prevent the marriage. This plot seems very thin to carry such a long novel. Much of what makes a Regency novel so special is missing from the “The Pursuit”.  The title is very accurate. However, as the story is like watching a very long  chase movie.

I enjoyed “The Pursuit”. With all the chase action along the way, I maintained my interest in the story.  I do feel however that Johanna Lindsey has written better books and that “The Pursuit” would have made a much better shorter novel.

After reading this book and “The Heir”, I feel the “Malory” series offers a   richer reading experience than these two stand alone non-series books. There is a new Malory book coming out very soon.

Michael Page is a very good reader.

Enjoyable Story – Lots of Action
