Today we're very thrilled to be talking to new SSE author Christyne Butler about her June release, THE COWBOY'S SECOND CHANCE. Christyne, thanks so much for joining us!
* Where did you get the idea for THE COWBOY’S SECOND CHANCE?
Oh, goodness I don’t know if I can remember! Landon and Maggie’s story started out as a short story for me about fifteen years ago. I’ve always loved cowboys and small towns and country fairs and romance…and it just blossomed from there! When I started to seriously pursue my writing I knew their story needed to be told fully so I dusted off that old story…
* Tell us about the hero of the book? Why will we fall in love with him?
Landon Cartwright is a tortured soul. While he wasn’t completely happy in his life, he was determined to make things better for his family, but a tragic accident robs him of that chance and he’s been carrying around a burden of guilt ever since. I hope readers fall in love with him for the same reasons I did…he’s a man who does the right thing even if it hurts.
* Tell us about the heroine. Why is she the absolute perfect woman for the hero?
Maggie is someone I wish I could hang with in real life! She’s smart and fun and strong, but a bit wary about trusting again after being hurt so bad in her past. She’s perfect for Landon because she can see the good man he is even when he can’t see that for himself.
* What life-lesson does your H/H have to learn before they can find their happily-ever-after?
Landon and Maggie need to learn to believe in themselves enough to take a second chance in their lives on someone. To put away the hurt of the past, to forgive themselves for things that were beyond their control and learn to love again
* Is there any particular significance in the setting?
I love small towns, both in fiction and real life, and how closeness can sometimes be intrusive or comforting (or both at the same time!) and I wanted Landon to feel like it wasn’t just being part of Maggie’s life, but part of her family and her town.
* What was your favorite scene to write?
I love the scene where Landon is sitting on the porch having a few beers and thinking Maggie is going to come home and fire him for something he’d done earlier that day…but that’s not exactly what happens!
* What was the most difficult scene for you to write?
When Maggie learns the truth about Landon and his past. She had placed all her love and faith in this man and be betrayed because 1) he didn’t confide in her and 2) when she gives him an opening to redeem himself he slams the door in that chance.
* Can you share if there were any real-life inspirations for a particular scene or character in the book?
Oh, I think real life always plays into an author’s work in some way. Nana B, Maggie’s grandmother, was named after my own grandmother and I think she carries her spirit as well as a few bits of my mother. And one of the ranches Landon worked at in his past was located in Blakeslee, Colorado and that town’s name came from my mother’s maiden name.
* What do you feel are your strengths as a writer? How did those show up in this particular book?
Dialogue tends to come easy to me (must be all those voices I heard in my head!) and I think when my characters talk to each other, it’s come across as real and fun --- at least I hope so!
* If this book had a soundtrack, what are some of the songs that might appear on it?
Oh, all my books have soundtracks! I am big fan of country music and it played so well with this book. I always find one particular song that I can connect with my hero and heroine. For Landon, I chose “You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like That” by Toby Keith (and Landon actually says those words to Maggie!) and for Maggie, it’s “The Right Kind of Wrong” by LeAnn Rimes, which was the working title of my book when it sold.
* Do any beloved characters from your previous books show up in this one?
As this is my first Silhouette Special Edition, the answer is no, but I can tell you that many of the characters in this book do appear in my January 2010 release, THE SHERIFF’S SECRET WIFE!
* Is there an underlying theme to the story?
I think the theme is believing in yourself enough to take that second chance when it comes around.
* Any interesting tidbits of information you discovered while researching this book?
That horses are a lot bigger than they look? LOL! For someone who writes about cowboys, the first time I’ve ever been on a horse was last spring while attending a family reunion in Florida. I took my husband and our kids on a trail ride as a birthday gift to him as he loves horses (had his own as a child) even though it had been quite a few years since he’d been in the saddle. But he got right on that horse and rode like he infused with the spirit of John Wayne (his personal hero!) Me? Not so much! I’ll admit I was scared to death of falling at the beginning, but then enjoyed myself so much I am determined it won’t be another lifetime before I go riding again!
* Why will readers enjoy this book?
I think all of us carrying something—a personal decision, an incident, a choice –inside of us that we’d like a second chance at, an opportunity to try again, to say the words we never got to say. That’s that Landon and Maggie have when they stumble into each other lives…even if it takes them awhile to see it.
For me personally, I would love a second chance to tell my father how much I loved him and how proud I was for all he accomplished in his life. I can’t do that because he’s been gone ten year now, but I can’t wait until this summer when I get the chance to visit his grave at Arlington National Cemetery and say the words I should have said more often when he was still here to hear them.
How about you all? And second chance you wish you could have? And second chance you willing to take?

Personally speaking......
I'd give anything to have my grandparents back......you never truly appreciate them when you're a child, but I so would now! As for me - well I started writing around 9 months ago and I'm hoping that maybe I can find my second chance in suceeding at something I've come to enjoy immensely.
PS: Soooo love the cover on that book!

Woot!!!
What a great interview! Loved it!
And I'd give anything to have a chance to talk to my grandmother again. She lived with us from the time I was 2 until I was 22. I took having her around for granted, especially during my teenage years. Oh, to have the chance to re-do some of those years, to really appreciate having her here.
Anyway--loved your book, I have 2 copies, a paperback copy and the e-book edition that I bought a month early so I could read it. Fabulous!
See you next month!

Trish is my roommate at Nationals…she has to buy my book!
Can’t wait to see you again! And sounds like your grandmother was a special person!
Nicoleko…so glad you enjoyed my book! And yes, Sherriff Steele gets his story with Racy in January…now there was a fun couple to write about! And as a die hard Red Sox fan I had to check out your profile to see if the logo on your shirt was what I thought it was…glad to see you aren’t a fan!
Christine…thanks for stopping by! It seems our grandmothers are truly missed! My teenager was grousing a bit about losing her room to her grandmother as she was here from FL for my daughter’s graduation, but I told her to treasure the fact she has such a wonderful lady in her life!

Enjoy your month!
I can remembering absolutely bubbling the whole month when my first book came out. I didn't realize, even, how exhausting all that excitement could be until the new books were on the shelves and I could finally relax. It's gotten easier with time, but it's still always exciting.
I'm a big fan of giving second chances. It's a fairly common theme in my writing, probably because I believe in them, too. Yes, there are some second chances I would like for myself. Maybe someday

Great interview!
It is my grandFATHER who I wish I could visit with one more time. This is/was the only person on the planet who believed I was perfect (in his eyes -anything I did wrong - was my mother's fault!!). While I do not share his view of my perfection - I'd love to have him meet my son and to see where I am today (not that he'd be surprised that his perfect little girl was doing okay!).
Christyne - can't wait to read your book!

Great interview
I've got your book, Christyne, and what a great interview to tantalize us all.
I miss my grandparents(my dad's parents, don't remember my mom's parents), too. We lived in Mississippi and they lived in Michigan and we would do visit or they would come here. I remember one very special summer that I got to spend with them and my aunts, uncles, and cousins. After my grandfather passed away, we went to visit and I was older then. My parents went to go visit an aunt and I was left alone with Grandma. I peppered her with questions and learned alot about her childhood, how she met Grandpa, and about her family. I reflect a lot on that day and I treasure it. I got my love of cooking(and cooking gadgets) from her.

Congrats

Susan…thanks for dropping by! Yes, this whole month continues to be very exciting from the fan emails to seeing my books on the store shelves (and standing right there when someone grabs one!)
Lori…your grandfather knew a great thing when he saw it! And he would be so proud of you and your terrific little boy!
LindaC…sounds like amazing grandparents! I love listening to the older generation talk about the past! I recently found out my grandmother loved and planned to marry a professional hockey player back in the 20’s…until her father put a stop to it because he was a foreigner! (From Canada --- my grandmother was born and raised in Niagara Falls!)
Thanks Stacy…for the congrats and ordering the book!

Great interview, Christyne, and I can't wait to get the book in my hot little hands next month in DC!
Second chances? Well, I wouldn't mind having some of the time I spend on the internet back at the end of every day...oh, wait a minute.

second chances
Finding out more about my family history - more about what my mom and dad were like as kids - hear their stories. My mom passed when she was 50 and my dad at 60. I did get close to both. My mom always as a kid, then after my mom passed I got close to my dad. So I have a motto - good things do come out of bad things.
And Christyne - I LOVED this book. I bought because you lurk on the Supers thread and because it was your debut. Now I'm curious about Gage and Racy!
Christyne
I'm so excited for you and your new book. I'm getting it next week. I'd like a second chance with my parents and my oldest brother who passed. Sort of like that country song, "One more day."
Kathleen

HI all...sorry to being absent yesterday...
It was my local RWA chapter’s last meeting before our summer break and then dinner with my best friend from high school (talk about second chances...we let over fifteen years go by before we hooked up again...and we only live an hour away from each other!) and it ended with a trip to the ER with my teenager who was suffering from a wicked earache…geez!
Julie…Can’t wait to see you again too in DC! And I am still on the hunt for a new pair of fab shoes for the GH/Ritas!
Marice…aren't family stories terrific!! I love when my family gets together and we get start telling stories from the distant and recent past. Its amazing how us kids remember certain events in our lives differently than our folks! And I’m glad you enjoyed THE COWBOY’S SECOND CHANCE! Racy and Gage’s story was so fun to write…hope you like that one too!
Kathleen…oh, I love that song! “One More Day” by Lonestar…how many of us wish for just one more day with someone? Reminds us how we need to enjoy the time we have with the people we love right now!
Patsy…funny how you mentioned a letter to your dad…I plan to do the same thing and leave it at Arlington with a copy of my book at his grave. I know the staff will take it at the end of the day but for just a few hours I want him to have his own copy!

THE SHERIFF'S SECRET WIFE, Silhouette Special Edition, January 2010
Christyne,
Second chances are a great topic for discussion and sounds like a great theme for a book. Can't wait!
My second chance would be with my dad who is struggling with Alzheimers. I would record more of the family stories he told and label more of the pictures, both for him and for me, and I would insist on going to the doctor with him earlier. As it was, I wrote his doctor explaining why I thought he might be in early Alzheimers, but the doctor didn't bother putting him on any drugs for it for about 3 more years. Since Dad said I didn't need to go with him and the HIPPA laws prevented the doctor from discussing his care with me, I feel terribly guilty that he might have slowed down the progression of this horrible illness if I had gotten adamant and insisted on seeing the doctor with him. Of course, you can't spend lot of time on 'woulda, shoulda, couldas'. They'll drive you crazy.

on your dad's condition...that disease is hard to deal with. And yes, those pesky 'would've's, should've's and could've's" can really drive a person crazy! Being there for your dad now is the best you can do and that's doing alot!
