Raining cats and dogs

Super-blog-image.jpg

A few months ago, our grown daughter moved back home, bringing her two house cats. We worried how our two big ranch dogs would deal with their new roommates.

The cats had never had any interaction with a dog; our dogs had never met cats. We humans were a little nervous about all the sudden, unexpected animal introductions. And since I was the one who would be staying at home with the pets during the work day, I was particularly anxious to avoid any upsets. Or blood.

All our predictions about which animals would adapt the fastest or cause the most problems turned out to be wrong. The friendly cat was the one who hid the longest beneath our daughter's bed. The naughty dog turned out to be the gentlest with the newcomers. The shy dog still barks at the cats when they creep around corners; the neurotic cat chose to tolerate the situation from the first moment.

Have you ever introduced a new pet to an older one? Are you a dog person, a cat person, or both? Is your pet shy, neurotic, friendly, or naughty?

Pets

Well sadly I'm not allowed to have pets where I live. However in the past when I had cats and dogs I never had the dogs in the house with the cat.

I have a zoo.  I am also an adult daughter who moved back in with her parents bringing with me a cat and a dog and chaos erupts pretty much most of the day.  The cat has gotten smart in either running from them or boxing if they corner her and make her mad.  I am lucky that I did not have to give up my pets when I moved back in with my parents.  And we also have a scarlet mackaw thrown into the mix.

Mama Dog

Terry, when we brought home our German Shepherd as a nine month old, we were concerned how she would react to our three cats, because she had never been around cats.  We watched closely as our most timid cat approached the dog, creeping on her belly.  The dog was mesmerized.  Closer, the sweet little kitty crept.  The dog was quivering with the anticipation of meeting a new friend.  When the cat was merely inches away...she sprang straight up in the air and hissed.  Our poor German Shepherd was terrified, running behind me for protection from the widdle kitty.

They are now fast friends.  Well, except for Daisy-the-demon-cat, who isn't friends with any of the four-legged creatures and only a select few of the two-legged variety.

The two torties snuggle with our German Shepherd and clean her huge ears.  She in turn cleans their bottoms and nudges them gently away with her nose when they knead her tummy with their sharp claws.  They seem to think she is their mama.  Too cute!

Terry, I'm sure your menagerie will, at the very least, settle into a truce.

pet tempests

I had this happen twice when a daughter moved back home for a few months, bringing a pet with her. LOL!  The first time we had two dogs and a cat in the house and the new puppy was very polite.  The second time we only had one dog in the house and the cat decided she was now an outdoor cat because new puppy was determined to be in control!    The breed makes a difference.  Wink

I am a dog person!

I love my pups!  I have a 15 year old Schipperke and a 2 1/2 year old Pomerainian.  I was a little hesitant to bring the Pom (Cadillac) into the house with the Schip (Java) because Java and I had been together, alone for a while, after the death of Java's mate.  I asked the vet what she thought, would a new puppy be the wrong thing for Java?  It was amazing, Java took to that puppy like a duck takes to water.  She loves him, and if he's out of place, she is looking for him.  They chase each other around the house, it is so funny.  I never thought they'd be such buddies.  Java is pretty quiet, she doesn't bark, has more of a whine than a bark and I never hear that.  She's pretty laid back.  Cadillac on the other hand, is a spit fire!  He's always running and barking, he's definitely neurotic.  However, I love them both, they are my babies!

Our menagerie

We have a dog, 2 cats, a chinchilla, and 2 sugar gliders.  All but the sugar gliders are pictured here.

Our dog Triskit is friendly with people.  No fears there.  However, whenever anything around the house is in a place where she doesn't expect it, she's very timid, backing away and growling or barking.  One night, she was growling and barking at her own shadow on the back fence -- I swear to you that's true!  Our security light (motion-activated) came on, throwing her shadow on the fence, and she was scared to death.

She's a little bit intimidated by our cats sometimes, but not too badly.  Basically, the generally better-behaved but more reclusive cat (Carter) terrorizes her more than our outgoing, follow-you-from-room-to-room, bad boy (Meijer).  I guess that's because normally Carter tries to kiss her or lick Triskit's feet, but, as a reformed outdoor cat, he gets jealous when she goes out to potty.  So, sometimes when she comes back in, he'll swat at her or jump at her unexpectedly, causing her to scatter to get away.  Meijer, who is the embodiment of the phrase "Curiosity killed the cat.", pretty much just leaves her alone -- as he gets into anything and everything else.

However, even though she's a bit intimidated by them, she also feels it's her job to enforce the rules, even if she's scared.  So, if we scold the cats for something, she'll run over and bark and paw at them to get them to stop.  Even if they are doing something for which they've been scolded in the past (like investigating a partially opened screen door or scratching on the furniture, she'll go charging in to bark and paw at them until they stop.

After an initial fascination with the chinchilla, Carter ignores him completely.  (Dusty stays in a separate chinchilla cage, though, just in case!)  Meijer is often fascinated by him, though, sometimes sitting  on top of the cage and "fishing" for him through the bars.  (I like to think this is just playing, but I can't be sure.)  The chinchilla, who was big buddies with the cat in his former home, takes it all in stride.  Sometimes, he will raise up and pull at the hairs on Meijer's paws when he's fishing.

When people are around, oddly, our more reclusive cat is more likely to make a public appearance before the outgoing and inquisitive one.  I'm not sure why that is.

Triskit loves the sugar gliders (and the chinchilla), but because they'd make a tasty morsel for the cats, they're only around them under very protective circumstances.  Otherwise, they're in a large cage where they can glide about.  (Though my DD has seen Meijer sneak in and stare at them.)

pets

I'm definitely a cat person, have loved cats since I was little. My cats is affectionate and friendly, but he can be naughty at times. When a lot of people are over he'll go and hide for a bit. He'll eventually come back and want attention. When ever you sick or not feeling too great he's right there by your side.

I love all furry critters

I have 8 cats and a dog. There have been some times when a new animal has come into our home when we've had older pets. It can be a challenge but usually everything works out. Its best if you ease the new members of your household into the pets life.

It takes awhile but usually even the most stubborn animal comes around.

We took in a pregnant stray kitty when we had an old orange tabby and he took to the babies right away...He was like a grandpap to them.

One thing I can say about all my pets..each one has a very distinctive personality.

cats & dogs

Linda, I'm sorry you can't have pets in your current place.  I'm sure you miss them!  We've had a few "outdoor" dogs in the past, but they always managed to find their way inside...and got along fine with the "indoor" cats who found their way outside Wink.

Moonwitch, your description of your zoo made me smile--especially the part about your boxing cat Smile.  Good luck with all that animal chaos!

Mama Shephard

LOL at your fraidy-cat shephard, Carrie Smile.  I can picture the communal bathing time at your house, since one of our dogs likes to give the other a bedtime earwash, too.

Things are fairly quiet around here these days.  The cats have staked out the second floor as their territory, and the dogs get the ground floor to themselves Wink.

tempests in tea pots

Terri, I think you're right about the breeds involved in animal interactions.  Personalities probably play into the mix, too--I doubt Carrie's Daisy cat would make the effort to make friends.

We were sure surprised by our assumptions about our pets and their personalities.  It's our naughty, rowdy Lab who's the most patient with the cats while our shy, sweet, elderly mutt gives them the doggie version of the evil eye.

pets galore :-)

Awww, Chy, what a great story about Java taking to Cadillac that way Smile!  We've brought puppies into the house to be socialized by our doggie senior citizens, and it always seems as though the younger dogs pep up the older ones.

Wow, JV, you DO have a menagerie!  They all sound like so much fun Smile.  I'd love to meet Meijer--I enjoy watching cats stick their kitty noses into everything.  And "fishing" for a chinchilla--what a kick!

purrrrr :-)

Nicolerko, your kitty sounds like a real sweetie Smile!  There's something so soothing about petting a cat, isn't there?

Eight cats and a dog?  Wow, moodylady--that's a lot of fur under one roof Wink.  I loved hearing about your old orange tabby--what a special kitty grandpa Smile.

Terry,

If you clicked on the link to the pictures of our animal group, you'd know just by looking how much trouble our bad boy Meijer can get into.  He has that look in his eyes, especially in the picture of him with the Grinch hat on!

Meijer trouble

Omigosh, JV, your Meijer is a perfect Grinch, LOL!  My favorite is his "Meijer as a baby" pose--so much personality for a little guy Smile.

What terrific pics--thanks for sharing, JV!

My baby

My dog is my baby. He is so precious. He is energetic one minute and a complete lazy bones the next. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

baby doggies

Jessicue, our dogs are our babies, too Smile.  I'm embarrassed to admit we actually call one of them Baby Soft Face--what a ridiculous name!
