Lady Philomena "Phil" is a ghost hunter. Her magical abilities have manifested in an unusual way, giving her the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. She considers it her own responsibility to help ghosts find peace by fulfilling their missions. One unfortunate effect of this ability however is that suitors in Phil's past could not handle being with a woman who regularly talks to ghosts, resulting in Phil's being a spinster long past marriageable age.
Sir Nicodemus "Nico" Wulfson is a baronet and shape shifter, immune to magic, who has need of Phil's abilities. His brother Roy is being haunted by all the ghosts at their home estate Grimspell Castle and as a result is losing his vitality and life. If the ghosts can not be laid to rest, Roy could very well die.
Nico does not believe in Phil's gift, but he will do anything to help his brother, even going so far as to hire Phil, in the hopes that she can put Roy at ease. Little did Nico and Phil expect that her ghost hunting will lead to a danger far deadlier than either could possibly imagine. Circumstances are complicated even more by the irresistible attraction between Phil and Nico.
The mystery surrounding the Relic in Enchanting the Beast is well-hidden from the beginning, making us wonder when and how it and its special magic will come into play. While I guessed very quickly who the killer was, I had no idea how and why they were doing it. When that revelation was finally made, I about fell off the exercise equipment I was using as I read! I was floored by what was relaly going on and amazed I hadn't figured it out sooner.
I loved Nico and Phil's story, especially that Phil was not the usual heroine, being much older than the typical historical romance heroine. This gives her a different outlook on life and respectability, and leaves her floundering over the attentions of a much younger and extremely virile shape shifting man like Nico. The love that blossoms between these two is passionate and tender at the same time, luring us in as we too fall in love with this unlikely couple. Phil and Nico are perfectly matched in so many ways that we just know it has to all work out for them in the end.
I love Enchanting the Beast! Kathryne Kennedy is a wonderful writer with remarkable talent for richly detailed and beautifully told stories, perfectly suited to the fantasy world she has created. The world present in her books is refreshingly original with a Regency England where class is defined by magic rather than birth. The Relics of Merlin series has intrigued me from the very beginning and every book is better than those that came before. I don't know how I will be able to wait for the next exciting book in The Relics of Merlin series by Kathryne Kennedy.

The one thing that didn't
The one thing that didn't work for me was the brothel ghosts, just seemed almost forced to ensure there was enough sex. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the book and will be looking forward to the next in the series.
