I'm settling in and everything seems to be getting a lot clearer as time goes on. There are still a couple of things that I'd like to feel more comfortable with, but that will come with time and use.
It's so darned good to be back... posting reviews, reading fresh, new blogs, finding new books to look for...
Uh, yeah... I'm supposed to be curbing my book buying for this year... at least until I can make a sizable dent (ya, right!
) in my TBR.
So far this year, of the 10 books that I've read, 5 are from my TBR... I guess that makes this resolution (aka Cady's challenge) successful. Being that 50% of my read books I've had for awhile; I can now pat myself on the back!
Hey, not too shabby.
Of course, I have to maintain that! So, maybe I'll state, for the record:
For every NEW book that I read, I will follow up with one of my TBR's

Book buying haaha!
I thought I was going to be a good girl with the book buying vs reading...hehehe! Yeah right! I might have gotten alittle better.
I like the idea of reading a older tbr book whenever you read a new book. My current read is a brand new book and I plan on reading one I bought last year. I am trying to set a goal this year with trying to get my dusty tbr pile down.
A place inside my brain

Resolutions
Kathy - why not just make a resolution to READ as much as you
)and
)
possibly can, and concentrate on the old TBR between the time you place
an eharl order and when it arrives (except for ebooks
you could always limit your bricks and mortar store buying to after the
arrival of the order, so you're not scuppering your chances from the
very start (easy for me to say, I only ever "buy" books online
There's
)
no point whatsoever trying to convince you to leave alone the pile
you've just bought in a bricks and mortar bookstore, that's a recipe
for frustration, but if you can only buy them before an eharl order, or
after it's delivery, you're limiting temptation (though why on earth
you would want to resist temptation is anybody's guess

Book buying hahahaha...
Oh yeah.. the sound of insane laughter ringing through the house! Of course, I've got two or three online orders on the way to me as we speak... all pre-2008, so I guess that kinda counts...

re: Resolutions
Well, I'm gonna do what I can... 'sides a lot of the books in my TBR I *really* want to get to, but I get side-tracked with ALL the new books coming in ~ brick-and-mortar store and online. So I'm going to work on incorporating the oldies with the uh... newies doesn't really sound that good... but you know what I mean!
And now that we're back here blogging.. .and I can't seem to leave (unless it's because I had to drive my daughter to school
) all these blogs and reviews.
I'm going to have to portion my time better. ~get organized or something!
Thank you Sadhbh, you always manage to help me put things into perspective.

Okay ..... I need clarification ..........
what constitutes a book on TBR ....... how long must it exist in your house before it's classed as old enough to be a TBR?
or rather what constitutes a NEW book? .... new releases? ... a brand new book, never read and still being published?
where does one fit in the books that arrive "used" from V. V. or from eBay?
so far in Jan 2008 I've ordered 8 books, they haven't yet arrived ... and I have a previous eHarl order from December on it's way ........ so these are new books, however, as soon as they arrive they are placed in TBR
I think if we are being challenged to read TBR's, we need to clarify that it's books we've had kicking around for ages and ages ..... say older than a year? ....... maybe Cady clarified all this last year when she made the Challenge ... I think it's a good challenge and wouldn't mind participating .....

I always tell myself that I
I always tell myself that I absolutely positively won't get anymore books (new or new to me) until I get my TBR down to the size of a small hill as opposed to a mountain but somehow my mountain just continues to grow - I am beginning to think that books and rabbits have a lot in common!

TBR ~ definition...
Good point Katherine. I assumed that a TBR were the books that I've not read yet ~ of any age, stripe, newness or whatever ~ and that keep growing.
As for "new" ~ well, there's New new and Trade new and second-hand new... anything that I didn't have before. Hmm, mayhaps I should come up with another word for that ... or something.
Any ideas?

Oh boy... I think I've gotta agree with you on the reproductive properties of books... it sure seems as though there must be something more going on!

Old TBR as opposed to New TBR
A lot of people seem to have found (and are worried by the fact) that as they have even bigger Wishlists due to the blogs, they only ever read the books they have just bought and so all the older (less recently bought) books in the TBR just languish there, even though at one stage they caught our eyes with enough insistence that we actually shelled out hard-earned dosh for them
And hence the dichotomy between old TBR and new TBR was born.
I read fast enough that I don't care what TBR it's in, when I want to read it, as long as it isn't in the NY, CA or TX TBR I can get at it.
Part of the problem is buying books in lots, not wanting to get rid of the ones you haven't ever got around to reading, but wanting the space they occupy for books you've actually chosen as opposed to just acquired
Of course there's nothing stopping the bloggers from turning OFF their computers, locking themselves indoors and reading the pile down to nothing, but willpower to resist the blog entries and the temptation to add more names to the wishlist seems to be lacking
Maybe Jayne could bottle some and sell it online
but why would the people in the bookstore want her to?

I'm Need to Do This
I have books that I buy that I hear about at my book club meeting or read about here and want to read and then the books sit on my shelf for months because I buy more books that I just have to read and they go to the top of my TBR stack. There books that have been on my TBR stack for over a year. I managed to read some that were I bought early in the year in December. I will commit to reading more of the books that are more than a year old on my shelves. Also if I order a box of books then I want to read that whole box before reading any new shipment. (Read all books ordered in January before I read from February box.)
See what I read last year - Star's Reading Lounge
Hi Kathy! I wasn't
Hi Kathy! I wasn't expecting this site to be up till maybe next week...so it was a nice, somewhat scary surprise to get back from the city last night and not recognise anything here. I'm looking forward to learning my way around.
I really enjoyed Cadys challenge to read more of the older tbr books we all have collecting dust in our tbr's, that are often being past over for the flashy new reads. I think the challenge was to have 25% of a months reads be older tbr books, or something like that...i know i set my challenge for myself at 50% older reads...and had lots of fun reading from books that had been waiting forever for me to get to them...and had likely completely given up on ever getting read.
Good luck to you reading from your older tbr books...i hope you have fun with it also.
TC, Kathy

Back atcha Kathy
Yeah, if I can keep the ratio of least one older read for every new one book ~ not that I have to, or even usually, read the new ones when I get them... then I'll be making a better dent in the books that have been hanging around awhile. But there are some books that come out ~ and that I get one way or another ~ that I just have to read ASAP... usually Lora Leigh's books.
Nice to have you back Kathy!

I'm an odd ball then ........
okay, I'm just an oddball
I buy a lot of new books here at eHarl ..... plus I subscribe to a couple of imprints ..... but I'm one that may read about 20% of those brand new books coming in ..... I'm always reaching for the older books, trying to clear them out for more room ..... plus when I discover a new to me author and want to read more, I tend to collect their backlists and want to read from the earliest release forward (esp. with authors that love to link their stories) ...... so often my new TBR's are languishing!
so this year I thought I'd try to challenge myself to read more of the books that have just arrived or are currently being sold on eHarl (not out of print) ...... sort of a reverse of your TBR challenge LOL

Ah, not so odd then after all...
.. I'm kinda somewhere in the middle; I think sometimes it's just that I get into a rut or something ~ all new; all older; all series... just stuff like that.
But I do have a lot of books coming in still... and I don't read fast enough... now, if everyone would leave me along and I could sit and read to my poor little heart's content... well, then ~ that'd be perfect!

Not to brag.....
Hehe...I'm so evil. Not to brag or anything. I've read 19 books so far this year and all of them have been from my older TBR (the ones I got from my mother's house. Trying to clean out that stack some. I've purchased 10 here on e-harlequin and will probably get a couple of more from a brick and mortar store.
I'm literally drowning in books though. I've got to start clearing them out some...so that is my goal for this year. To remove at least one or two rubbermaid containers full of old books from my house. To avoid whenever possible acquiring new ones that will take their place, but mostly to read up more of the old ones.
Good luck to you guys with your goals too!

Book Buying
I tried to stop buying a lot of books but it did not work for me at all. I just have to buy my books right now I have a couple of orders out there that I am waiting on. I have books everywhere but hopefully I can make a dent in my tbr pile soon.

Re: Not to Brag.............
I'm jealous! LOL I know I'm not going to be able to read a lot this month. I have spring cleaning! Well, specifically the "Office" that we've never organized since we moved in to our office and our Bedroom that has also received the same treatment! Maybe I'll be able to lay back a day or two and do nothing but read! Congrats on your 19 books so far this year!
The reason I was able to do
The reason I was able to do so is that I've decided to get control of my spending this year (I need to know where my money is going) and start saving more. Therefore, I will be spending less money on books (sigh) and less time looking in stores for new books.
Also, I haven't felt like do anything, bur read and sleep because I got a nasty cold at Christmas and I'm just now recovering. I don't recommend that as a way to find more time to read, but it has helped my numbers.

New Year Old Books
Well, I have to agree with a lot of what I read. I want to curb the "new" book buying, but if I can get it used, in a trade, or as a gift it doesn't count as "new".
As for reading out of my TBR so many each month, with how fast I read and my review commitment it's most likely not going to happen. I am however hoping to read a lot more from my TBR. I managed several last year that had been there for awhile, and I hope to again this year.

TBR?
You know, I really don't have a TBR pile growing at home. One, I don't buy a lot of books at one time anymore b/c I never know if I'm going to end up loving or hating them and two, I've signed up for a service that keeps tracks of what I want and sends them to me as they become available. Granted, I like having books on hand to read but I like that it's a managable pile and not 50-1000 books sitting there. I think I might go a little crazy knowing that I had that many books to read! And yes, I am a tad anal so it would drive me nuts! LOL I would probably ignore everthing around me in order to read all of those books!!!!! How does that urge not overtake you?!?!?! I just couldn't imagine! Too much pressure I guess! LOL
hmmm...
Its impractical to ignore everything to read 1000 books though I must say that I have indeed been tempted. I probably have that many in the TBR due to my mom giving me a ton of her old books, plus what I have.
Laughter is an instant vacation- Milton Berle
Ignoring everything and everybody in order to read
that sounds like me - would you like a picture
Except
I'm only at 26 for the year so far because I'm in a bit of a slump and
most of the books I pick up get put down again after a couple of pages
I'm blaming the bronchitis, but it may be just plain reading slump
I'll know when the bronchitis is gone, but the reading slump's still here

re: Reading Slump
I had reading slumpitis last year myself. I was a bit amazed b/c I usually want to pick up a book all the time. I think part of it had to do with all the not-so-good books I was reading at that time too. I had a period where all the books were just so blah.
Sadhbh
Jeepers, I sure hope your bronchitis is over very soon... mine was really mild this year ~ at least the winter one was... as for the summer... meh... I can wait!
As for the reading slump... jeez, that's a LOT more serious! I mean how are you supposed to cope with illness and just *stuff* if reading isn't working.
Alls I can say is thank heavens for TBR's with a W-I-D-E variety of genres, because if I hit a slump (Oh, the horror!) then I really try to find *something* that'll work.
Here's keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Hugs,

... just having *close* to 1000 books would blow my mind! And unfortunately, I've yet to find a way to be able to ignore everyone and everything... and still manage the day-to-day. Hmm, ever think of trying to find a way to clone yourself? Have the clone do the *stuff* and we get to sit back and enjoy the reading.
