To rot a brain or not to rot a brain....

To rot a brain or not to rot a brain that is the question that another blogger and I have been discussing a lot lately.  We usually chat either by email or IM's on a daily basis, and thus we are learning about one another's quirks...or perhaps she is learning more about me than she might like to!

What she's learning is that I'm hopelessly addicted to old TV.  Some of the old TV I'm addicted to might be considered classic, but most of it is more than likely considered campy.  If my old favorites aren't on then I've discovered Trading Spouses which is in reruns on CMT.

I can't help myself I'm hopelessly addicted, and we tease one another that I'm slowly but surely killing off brain cells, which may or may not be a bad thing.  It surely means I can't hold an intelligent conversation with an educated person, but it also means that perhaps some of the stupid things I constantly observe at work may not bother me as much because I will no longer recognize them as stupid.

So I got to thinking we all must surely harbor some deep inner secret that we feel others will think less of us if they know about it.  Just how brave are you?  Are you willing to share what your addiction is, and whether or not you think it kills off some of your brain cells as mindless TV is sure to be killing off some of mine.

I love old TV!  I also love

I love old TV!  I also love this soap opera that got cancelled, Passions.  What I share depends on to whom, I suppose.  There wws this judgemental group of ladies in NC who gossipped in a mean fashion about everyone and the real goal there was to hide anything and everything because they were just nasty to people.  Everyone needs down time, laughter time.  Silly time is great too.

Ok,

I'm not much of a TV watcher, but I will sit for hours and watch old episodes of Remington Steele!

I'm not much on television...but

I spend way too much time on the internet, doing nothing significant.  I do like to watch Army Wives and The Bachelor/Bachelorette.  I'm a sucker for military drama....reruns of JAG are my favorite rerun shows.

Okay..

since you fessed up in public Wink, I'll admit that I could watch episodes of "The A-Team" nonstop and have done so before.  Whole days even!  I don't do it often, but if I see one on and turn to that channel or if I put the DVD in (because yes, I own all the seasons), then I'm lost!  Hopelessly lost!

Hmmmm,

I suppose that my secret isn't that surprising, but I love the cheesey teen flicks that are adapted from Shakespeare.  I can quote parts of 10 Things I Hate About You... since is it one of my frequent repeats.  Also, I FINALLY had a chance to watch She's the Man! and I about laughed myself silly.

Maybe it is just cheese that I like because I also love all those musicals from the 50s and 60s--not just the really good ones like Oklahoma! and The Sound of Music, but the ones with terrible puns like Kiss Me, Kate! and Guys and Dolls.  In fact, I used to watch Singing in the Rain frequently with my son because it would calm him down.  I don't know if he still can, but at one time he could sing the song from the diction coach scene: "Moses Supposes His Toes are Roses."

Recently, my dh got me addicted to Ice Road Truckers, Deadliest Catch and Black Gold.  I'm not usually much for reality TV, but I love those shows.....

I don't watch TV

I don't watch TV, guess I've lost too many brain cells already but if they were to bring Man from U.N.C.L.E., Six Million Dollar Man back or Get Smart I might get addicted again. I loved a lot of the old shows.

Man from Uncle, Get Smart,

Man from Uncle, Get Smart, MASH, WKRP in Cincinatti, My Three Sons, The Partridge Family, Father Know Best, Hazel, Bewitched… Need I go on.  It's a good thing I live in France because if I had acces to Nick at Night on cable, I would spend my life in front of the TV watching old reruns.

MASH

I remember growing up I could find MASH reruns on some channel almost 24 hours a day. The same thing with I Love Lucy but I never liked that show.

I Love Lucy

I'm seriously addicted to this show.  I watch it just about every chance I get.  I can't imagine not liking it!  Guess that's why there are so many old tv shows...just like books.  We all have our favorites.

When my husband and I were dating in college.  We would watch the 10:00 news followed by Mash, and then he would go off to a late night study session, and I would head to bed.  So MASH holds very special memories.

I have both I Love Lucy and Mash on DVD and complete series in case anyone was interested.

Oops! Sorry to malign a much loved show. I didn't like Desi, actually. (He reminds me of my first heartbreak/crush, Jose, at the tender age of eight. Of course he was 30, but I didn't like Desi after that.)

Angle...

After you said you didn't like it, I found out another friend didn't like it either!  I guess that I just have so many friends who did that I didn't ever think that there were people who didn't really like I Love Lucy.

I only liked her modern TV

I only liked her modern TV show with her kids.  The old one was just to excruciating watching her get herself into trouble.  I felt for Ricki.

Fun subject...

My secret, I watch way to much TV but mostly current programs & reruns of some of the shows I like because the current programs are bad!!  Reality TV shows don't hold a lot of appeal to me but, I have to confess to watching The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Dancing with the Stars, Hopkins (really like this, hope they will keep it on for the fall).  Also, I love Jeopardy and the new Million Dollar Password.  I never tire of Jeopardy and love it when I know the answers to things I didn't know that I knew!!!  If I can't find something on to watch I will watch one of my Oprah DVD's, a movie or turn over to HGTV love that channel but am jealous I can't redo a house or buy all new furniture!!

Thanks Sandi for letting my brain be stimulated by a discussion! Smile

Have a good weekend!

Take care, happy reading,

I don't watch much TV, not

I don't watch much TV, not enough hours in the day, however there are some shows that I would watch if I had unlimited hours. Get Smart, MASH, China Beach, Northern Exposure, Quantum Leap, Eli Stone. I like quirky shows.

Nancy

I don't watch much tv

My sister watched Dancing with the Stars for two seasons and I finally started watching it the third season so I could have something to talk about with her. Also watch Nashville Star but don't like it since it changed networks. As for old shows I really liked Mary Tyler Moore, Barney Miller, WKRP in Cincinati, Rhoda and the Carole Burnett Show. I liked Little House on the Praire and bought all the Laura Ingals Wilder books as a result. My very first favorite show was Bonanza as even as ayoung girl I loved the guys.

Carole Burnett Show?

Oh yeah, that sitcom still cracks me up, Kaelee.  I own some of the episodes on DVD.  Tim Conway was so hilarious when he dressed up like an old man!  And what about Mama's Family - the spin off show?

How about the Jeffersons, The Andy Griffith show, and *snort* The Dick Van Dyke show?  Yep, I'm a junkie for old sitcoms... and old movies, too.  And age has nothing to do with it!  Some things are just timeless.  Smile

Wow!

Lots of us like old TV.  I wonder if years and years from now the new shows will get us much replay and following as what we have come to love.

I didn't know that Carol Burnett was available on DVD.  I'm going to have to check that out!

Sandy....

Yeah, there's the older Burnett shows and then reunion ones on DVD, too.  I think the older ones are the best though.  I ordered mine from eBay. Smile

Sandy,

I have to admit, I wonder about what will happen to a lot of the new shows.  We just don't watch that much when it comes to the regular network TV because we don't find many of today's comedies that funny.  When we do watch, we tend to watch the crime dramas like CSI: and Cold Case

When I think about great TV, I tend to think about the shows I watched growing up--Hogan's Heroes, The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote, The Cosby Show.  (And, of course, I've been known to completely date myself in the classroom by calling students "Horshack"  Embarassed).

I wonder if anything is out there today that deserves syndication, but that is strictly personal opinion.  Also, I suppose it has a lot to do with the fact that people are watching it now, so those fans would probably like to see it pop up again.  I, personally, cringe at the thought that some of today's reality TV shows might never end....

My guilty pleasure

There is one activity my wife forbids me to mention in any conversation.  I was an avid gamer, as in role playing games.  I would pursue the hobby today, but I am too busy with family and real life.

My guilty pleasure might be Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I loved that show, use to watch it every morning before work or while I worked out when I came home - prekids - It is a bit scary for them.  I am also stuck on Dancing with the Stars.

Why does your wife forbid you mentioning RPGs?  I used to game 4 nights out of 7 when I was in grad school.  Fantasy was much more alluring than real life.Wink

Dang, 4 out of 7 days!  Grad school was a nightmare in scheduling for me.

My wife feels others would think less of me if they knew about it.  There is some truth to the thought.  There are times when I have mentioned participating in RPGs, only to have the revelation greeted with awkward silence.

When people ask me what I do for fun, I have often been tempted to say, I participate in an amateur think tank that studies the effect of the individual in social, political, and economic simulations of industrial and pre-industrial societies and the dynamics of small groups in adverse condition.  I also read, garden, and enjoy camping. I like your style!

I once wrote a paper for a grad school class in which I argued that RPG, specifically D&D, was interactive literature.  My Prof has my DM come to give a lecture about what he did.
