My February release, The Blackmailed Bride’s Secret Child, is set in and around a New Zealand winery. In the name of research, I visited a New Zealand winery and tasted lots of samples. Oh, the sacrifice of it! Though, to be honest, I’ve never been much of a wine buff and one thing that really struck me was the variety of scents: fruity, sweet, a dash of cinnamon, an element of peach.
It was such a good surprise because I *love* a good scent. Freshly ground coffee, just-out-of-the-oven bread, rain falling on hot concrete, salty surf spray. And what romantic occasion would be complete without the scent of roses, chocolate torte or champagne? Ah, the nose knows the way to the heart.
What about you? What are your favourite scents? And does one scent speak of romance more than others for you?
Two commenters will win a copy of either my January release, Claiming His Bought Bride or February's The Blackmailed Bride’s Secret Child.

Lovely smells
Hi Rachel
I love your cover and the New Zealand winery setting sounds gorgeous! It must have been great to research.
I'm a VERY big fan of fragrance and can be transported back to different times in my life when I smell particular perfumes. My grandmother always wore an Estee Lauder perfume and my mother wears Chanel No 5 so I immediately think of them when I smell those fragrances.
The first perfume my dh gave me was "Paris" and every time I smell it I think of the first summer we dated.

Scent & Memory - Barb
Oh, don't they say that smell is the sense most strongly linked to memory? I can believe that. There are smells that take me straight back to a time and place too.
I forgot all about perfume when I wrote this blog. Of *course* all those lovely fragrances should be up there with favourites. Thanks for adding them in!

You could combine the two,
You could combine the two, perfume and wine, by putting a little gewurztraminer behind you ears. It smells like roses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gew%C3%BCrztraminer

Hi Rachel
I can't walk past a rose bush without smelling the blooms. It's only disappointing if it's one of those roses that's all about the flower and not the scent.
And I love the smell of salt spray at the beach. I can always conjure up romantic images for a beach setting, whether its quietly lapping waves or a thundering surf, surely there'll be a couple there falling into love.

Smells
I love certain scents... Lately it has been apple though. I supported the local basketball team by buying candles from them, they were apple cobbler scented. They smell awesome. I love The smell of clean laundry so guess what my favortie Yankie Candle is. Yep it is Clean Cotton... I could go on on and on but we would be here for days. I honestly do not like the scent of vanilla or rose in candles or lotion though I despise it. I dunno why but both of them just make me sick..

The Scent of Romance?
Great question, Rachel. Flowers -- whatever the favourite -- must be right up there. And the signature scent for both man and woman...some of the most romantic and enticing ad's are for perfumes. Myself, I love food related scents, although I've been trying to work out if that's romantic or more sensuous. Love the smell of coffee, cinnamon, vanilla and loads of fruits. Peach, mango, apples, sharper citruses. So many nuances to the sense of smell, very powerful stuff.
Love that cover!

Best romantic scent? A combination of dark chocolate and red wine, perhaps?

Great topic, Rachel. I've
Great topic, Rachel. I've long been fascinated by the link between scents and memories. I found this just now on the internet:
I'm not sure about the scent of romance (although Chanel's Allure pour Homme, gets mighty close.) Favourite scents...hmm, the smell of sunshine in the washing as I bring it in off the line. I'm not overkeen on highly scented washing powders and the more subtle they are, the more 'fresh air' scent I believe I can smell on the sheets as I bring them in. A friend of mine argued once that putting them in the dryer with a scented softener pad was just as good but I wouldn't be swayed. A favourite childhood memory/scent is waking on a Saturday morning, there'd be a faint remnant of Radox (bath salts) in the air as my mother left the bathroom after having a relaxing bath before heading to the kitchen to start baking. And then, of course, there'd be the delicious aromas of a cake or two in the oven. Oh and summer scents, the smell of freshly cut lawn grass, ripe tomatoes (even though I don't particularly like tomatoes) and strawberries. Love 'em all.
BTW, Rachel, have you ever seen the movie French Kiss? It's one of my favourite all time films and the scene where he gets her to smell certain aromas then taste the wine and tell him about it--just wonderful. There's such a passion in winemaking (and drinking
) I can't wait to read your book!

I love scented roses, and I agree that it's so disappointing when they don't have a perfume!
You are such a romantic! And I seem to remember you mentioning the beach quite often in posts on this blog - I can see how much you love it. And from your descriptions I bet you're converting anyone who didn't love it already.

Hi Rachel!
Love your cover! I'm a big fan of scent, especially when paired with wine (wish I had an reason for all my wine drinking..I don't think I can count it as research as a student teacher lol) I love fruity smells, like raspberries or peaches or coconuts (I just like to think of pina coladas). For romantic scents, I have this lotion from Bath&Body Works that is blackberry vanilla-sweet yet romantic I love the scent of vanilla for romance. And rain. Unless you live on a farm around fertilizing time, the scent of rain is so romantic to me.
When I have a little money I buy books. If any is left I buy food and clothes. -Erasmus

Jessiecue - apple scent
I love, *love* apple scent. In shampoo, particularly. But I've never investigated apple sceneted candles - what a fabulous idea.
I don't think we get the Yankie Candle brand in Australia, but I can imagine that Clean Cotton must be divine. Sounds like the sort of thing I could probably order online for presents for family though... Thanks for sharing your favourites!

Best Scent Ever
I love the smell of a puppy - that sweet, clean, slightly doggy scent. Horses & hay. The smell of a forest floor mulching down into new earth. Natural scents (not manufactured). As for romance... Probably the smell of an open fire crackling. Always makes me think of winter, long lazy days by the fire, hours to kill.... ;)

I love the scent of coffee -
I love the scent of coffee - though I'm only a decaf drinker - and various herbal teas. I find perfume can be strong for my delicate nose in huge doses so I really avoid the perfume counters at department stores which about knocks me over from over-smell.
I love the smell of wine too - though I don't drink alot. Hmmm...smell really does hit you first doesn't it. Oh and my mum baking Greek sweets.
And I love scented candles and essential oils. I love the smell of the salty air at the beach, the rain, flowers.
I'm dusting after renovations ATM, so right now all I can smell is dust!

Smell
I love scented candles but right now I'm hung up on a new air freshner by Febreze. It's called Moroccan Bazaar. One side is ginger the other side is nutmeg. It alternates releasing the fragrances. I could just hover over it to smell it. It makes me think of a spice market and how lovely the smells would be. You know that is one place I would love to go, a spice market. When my birtday rolled around this year my youngest daughter bought me several of these. She knew I enjoyed them. I don't know where all they are available, but if you get the chance you should try it.

Interesting
Yeah, I think my favorite scent / smell is fresh baked chocolate chip cookies... there is nothing like it. It makes me feel 'at home'.
I cannot stand the smell of coffee anymore. Back when I was pregnant, I had to take an Iron supplement and to absorb it better, you have to take it first thing in the morning and wait at least half an hour before you eat. I would wait while my fiancée made coffee... and the smell... well, it helped induce morning sickness. Since then the smell of coffee triggers bad memories.
Another things I like to smell... candles... I like guessing their scent.
I also like smelling roses, in my opinion, each rose smells different.
XOXO

Scents
I tend to prefer different scents depending on how I'm feeling. My favourite smell at the moment is apples (especially in Lush Cosmetics Christmas Bath Ballistic - So White). I also like vanilla, chocolate and berries.Oh, and the smell of fresh baking is always good.
Honestly, I can say that there is any scent that I associate with romance.
Being a Kiwi, I just have to ask where in NZ you set the winery in your books. I'm looking forward to reading those books now.
Lyn - Kiwi wineries
Another apple fan! So that makes three: you, me and Jessicue who are all apple fans.
I never actually say in the book, but in my mind it's in the gorgeous Marlborough region. The winery is only in one book, my second one with the cover above, but my first book has some time in Auckland when the Australian hero and heroine fly over from Sydney to get married. A definite NZ trend here which I think says something about how romantic a destination I think NZ is!

Scents make no sense?
Unfortunately, strong smells give me headaches. I hate standing in an elevator with someone wearing overpowering perfume or cologne. I cough and cough and cough while trying to hold my breath. Doesn't work well.... I wish I knew the name of one of those perfumes, as to me it smells like fish, but apparently it is quite popular with the ladies! Who knew?
I also like the smell of gasoline. Love to drive through a local airport and smell the jet fuel. Wouldn't want to get any closer, mind you. The same goes for self-serve gas for my car. I no longer pump it myself because the smell will stay on me for hours on end. It's a rough life, as I leave it for my DH to pump for me instead, as I still appreciate cheaper gasoline!
I like cinnamon-scented candles but rarely use them. I store them in a cabinet, and every time I get something out of the cabinet, the scent overpowers me before I quickly close the doors again. I only use the candles when the power is out so I can read or do paperwork. I set the cinnamon candles farther away from me, though.
I love the smell of fresh baking. Whenever I bake brownies, my son walks in the door, sniffs loudly, and proclaims, "BROWNIES!" Fresh bread is divine as well.
I love all kinds of scents.
I love all kinds of scents. Pie crust, home baked breads, chocolate chip cookies, lasagna, new mown grass, sandalwood, are the tip of the iceberg. Scent of romance? Aramis.

I was nodding along with you about the overpowering perfumes in enclosed spaces like an elevator... until you got to the part about loving jet fuel!
You are one interesting woman, Laney!
Funnily enough, we had a blackout last night (after a storm) and had to light candles, and I was reminded of how pretty a room is when lit solely by candles. Must see if I can get a cinnamon candle. I love the scent but haven't ever had a candle in cinnamon.

Scents
Scents bring back memories for me too. If i walk past someone in a store with my late mother's perfume (Amarige) i look for her still (coming up 9 years).
We live near an Arnotts biscuit factory and some days I think I put on weight just walking outside and breathing in.
As for romantic scents i think for me it's the perfume my hubby gave me a month after we started dating and i still wear. The scent of freshly lit candles and freshly opened wine are pretty romantic and I'm with nikki on the crackling fire...
Bec - memories
Bec, isn't it fascinating how tightly scent is connected to memories? Yvonne's info above about it was so interesting. Hugs on the 9 years.

Scents :-)
Rachel, you know my love affair with scents. Can't do without them in my writing life. A good wine, an incense or candle ties me direct to a book, a loved one or friend. They give an immediate emotional trigger until the words pour out of me.
My favourite scent is either "Winter Forest" incense by L'Occitane, or anything coconut or peppermint. Uplifting, visual and strong, all of them. And lucky me! Our local garden store supplies Yankee candles - here in small-town Switzerland. I love the Desert Sands candle. Used that for The Sheikh's Destiny. Hmmm...must go back there before we move!
