Rand is a drifter, never staying in one place or one job for too long, enjoying the opportunity for many adventures. Currently working as a chimney sweep, he is called to his friend Ben Ruthferd’s inn to clean out the chimney in the newly remodeled annex.
Kaelyn has been there waiting patiently to be rescued. A former maid to the Ruthferd family, she is called out of her ghostly slumber when Rand shows up. For the first time in a long time she can touch again and finds herself drawn to Rand. As they become friends and lovers, Rand starts to dig deeper into her story and finds a decades old secret.
I have to say I had never read a book by Ann Cory before and I wasn’t sure what to expect from Secrets in the Annex, but the story intrigued me enough to make me buy it. So I was pleased to see that my first foray into Cory’s world was a very enjoyable one.
One thing I especially liked about this one was that I didn’t have any idea it would end the way it did. Sure, I had my theories on how it would conclude (and one of those theories would have been quite upsetting if it had been correct) but I was so far off base that the ending was a wonderful surprise. Another appealing facet to the story was the reference to the variety of legends out there about the luck a chimney sweep brings to those around him. This added a touch of whimsy to the plot.
I love Rand and Kaelyn. They are star crossed lovers and their story is so bittersweet it will grip your heart and not let go. I do admit I thought Kaelyn was a little too clueless about what happened to her that led to her meeting Rand the way she did. She does grow wiser as the story progresses though. Rand is a sexy dedicated man once he chooses his path and we see this in his relationship to Kaelyn that develops.
If readers are looking for a short sexy story with a few very enticing twists in the story, than Secrets in the Annex is a book for them.
