Caroline was an interior decoratoer who had used her late husband's
life insurance to set up her own business. Danny was her six-year-old
son. One night she went to up to bed but lay awake for a long time
worrying. Some time after two am she smelled smoke and discovered a
fire at the base of the stairway and quickly spreading throughout the
house.
She and Danny were able to escape from the house but it was completely
destroyed. Because the cause of the fire was under investigation they
were not allowed back into the house for three days. Caroline was able
to retrieve her important papers and a few old photos which were in a
metal box but everything else was destroyed. The police later
determined the fire to be arson. Someone had tried to kill Caroline and
Danny.
Betty and Jim McClure who were neighbors allowed Caroline and
Danny to stay with them and since they owned a furniture store they
allowed Caroline to set up her "office" there. She met Stella
Wainwright whose brother-in-law owned a mountain lodge in Colorado that
she wanted redecorated and she gave Caroline the job.
Wes Wainwright was staying at the lodge with his six-year-old
daughter Cassie. Once Caroline and Danny arrived at the lodge strange
things began to happen. One day Danny & Cassie went missing. Wes
& Caroline eventually found out that the kids had found a "treasure
map" and headed for a cabin to find the treasure. It was a dangerous
trip and it was even more dangerous for the trip back because it began
to snow and the temperature began to drop. It appeared that someone was
trying to kill the kids. And this was not the end of the strange things
that were happening.
This book keeps you guessing until the surprising ending. Really a good story.
