This is JG’s newest book, it is a return to her historical roots. I had read a couple of reviews of this book prior to opening it and was a bit hesitant to read it. I should not have worried, no this is not JG’s best historical novel – for that I would recommend The Secret or Ransom, but it is a pretty-good novel. JG is not known for historical accuracy, what she is known for is a sense of humor and a light enjoyable novel. I found this book to have all that. Gabrielle is the daughter of a princess of a former country (now an English Settlement) and British Baron. When King John decides that she should marry a Scotsman to make peace there and avoid conflict in England, her father agrees as it seems like a good match. Unfortunately, chaos erupts and the marriage does not occur, Gabrielle ends up with Colm MacHugh. MacHugh is a Scottish Laird and is highly regarded within the Highlands. The two slowly make a match and deal with a variety of enemies as they develop their future. (That slow pace is likely an issue for many reviewers.) Overall, this is an enjoyable story – not one I would likely pay hardcover price for, but definitely worth a read. Cady ‘s Books – 8

JG's Historicals
My favorite by her is Saving Grace. I will have to pick this one up.
Laughter is an instant vacation- Milton Berle
I, apparently in the
I, apparently in the minority, enjoyed JG's contemporary books but have never actually read one of the historicals. But this one interests me because it supposedly explains some of the history mentioned in Shadow Dance. But I have been afraid to read it because the posts I've read haven't been very positive. I might go ahead a give it a try now. Thanks.

I thought it was enjoyable,
I thought it was enjoyable, not my favorite, but definately good. I, too, liked her contemps - so more than others of course, one of my favorites was Mercy.
V- Saving Grace is a classic. I always wanted the story of the h's brother. I also wanted the story of the sister in The Bride. I don't know if she will do another historical or go back to contemporaries next.
While, I enjoyed this, I am hesitant to recommend paying hc prices, so if you can get it from your library or some great deal at one of those price clubs places, go ahead. Otherwise, I might wait until paperback.

I enjoyed Mercy a lot. I
I enjoyed Mercy a lot. I thought Murder List was good too. I can't really pinpoint a favorite though. And I loved the fact that Shadow Dance was Noah's story.

I'm so glad you liked this book. After reading all those reviews, I got kind of disappointed. But there were some good one so I figured it couldn't be that bad.
My favorite is The Secret but I love all her historicals. My favorite contemporary is also Mercy.
Margie :)
Margie, I will be
Margie, I will be interested to hear what you think of this one, I know my thoughts were likely biased by reading all of those negative reviews. I don't know what I would have thought without them.
Shannon- I also liked Murder List and Shadow Dance. Actually, the one I am not sure if I liked or not was the first - Heartbreaker.

Thank you
Thanks Cady. I'd also read some negative reviews about this book and I was really wondering if it could be as bad as all that. I'm feeling much better about this book now.
Karen, can't wait to read
Karen, can't wait to read your review. Like I said it is pretty good, but all books are subjective. I read somewhere someone was saying they liked it better than Come the Spring which they hated and no where near as good as Lyon's Lady - me, LL is one of my least favorite JG books, so it is all subjective.

I was worried about this
I was worried about this book as well, after reading all the negative reviews out there...but then i thought, it's JG and while it may not wow me, surely it will at least be a good one.
I'm sure all the negative reviews will help me when i read it.
Glad to hear you enjoyed this one Cady.
It's so interesting how people's feelings can differ so much, for the same book, cause Heartbreaker is my favorite of this series...Not a huge surprise to me though, since i am a firsts girl, meaning i generally always become more attached to the first book in a series.
What's really weird though...if i make a mistake and read the wrong book to a series first...because it's my first, and i read it believing it the first...it remains my favorite. Must be a brain connection thing.

I have...
I have only read a couple of her contemporaries but sounds like I need to check out some of her historicals. I'm really only just now starting to read any historicals so I'm such a newbie to that genre.

JG's has some wonderfull
JG's has some wonderfull historicals out there, and my favorites all have at least a little humour sprinkled throughout.

I can't wait to get this book. I was on the library list at number 47 but I checked and they got a large print version with only 10 holds. I cancelled the other one and now I am number 11. I do like that the words are bigger but then that means that so is the book. Oh well, I don't want to wait so long.
Debbie, I think I already said this but my first book by her was The Secret followed by Ransom. They are connected but can be read separately. Honors Splendor is really good and so many. I love her historicals.
Margie :)
Debbie, I would second
Debbie, I would second Margie's recommendations - The Secret and Ransom are both great, so is Honor's Spendor, I think those are three of my favorites, another great one is Saving Grace.
Kathy - I understand the first thing. I think part of my problem with Heartbreaker was just the switch to contemporary, but for some reason the story didn't seem to have as much humor as say Mercy.
Margie - I get large print books from the library sometimes too, it is nice on the eyes.

I have placed holds on the large prints a few times and I love how they are so easy on the eyes. I keep forgetting that eHarl has large print. I don't think they are too much more than the regular.
I agree about Saving Grace. All this talk about JG's books is making me very anxious to read her new one. I'm so glad she has written it. I hope she is back to historicals.
Margie :)
