I have a book coming out in May called The Boyfriend's Back. It's about a guy named JT and a woman named Hailey who dated 15 years ago when they were seniors in high school. JT comes back to town for his mom's funeral and...well...this causes some problems for Hailey. So with this book coming up soon, I've been thinking about boyfriends. Old boyfriends, in particular. I'm sure we all have a lot of good stories to tell about this subject, right?
Let's start with The Prom. Leave a comment on this post with a memory you have of The Prom (or any dance or date from your high school years). I'll choose one random name to win your choice of the following:
- Wanted Man (UK edition of my first book)
- His Secret Past (my second book from May 2008)
- Any Superromance currently on the shelves (subject to availability here in Ithaca)
I'll kick things off by sharing some of my prom experiences.
- I went to my junior prom with the guy who was my very first boyfriend. We "dated" all through middle school but he dumped me the first week of high school for a girl with the nickname Bopper. Go figure. Neither of us had a date to the junior prom so we went "as friends."
-
My first prom dress was a purple taffeta Gone with the Wind style number complete with hoop skirt. If I had a picture I'd post it. Then the internet would probably gasp in shock and die. It was quite a dress.

- I didn't have a date for the senior prom either. ("Dateless" was pretty much my standard situation in high school.) My friends talked a college boy into taking me. I'm pretty sure they also bought the ticket and maybe even paid for the tux. At the time I was very impressed by my "college guy" date. Later, I realized he was a college sophomore and he'd agreed to go to a high school prom with a girl he'd never met. Sketchy, much? He did have a very cool car, though.

- My second prom dress was purple dotted swiss. (Anyone think my taste in prom dresses contributed to the whole "dateless" thing?) It was an atrocious item but I loved it.
- I just found out last night that my husband also attended my junior prom. He was a senior at a different high school but he was dating a girl from my school. I never even knew that. (We met 10 years after that prom.) I wonder if we'd be married if he'd met me for the first time when I was wearing my purple taffeta hoop skirt?
Okay, who's next? Prom? Dance? Date? High school? We want to hear your story!
Cheers,
Ellen
P.S. I'm hoping Susan Gable will stop by and let us know if her prom dresses were also purple. She and I share a love for purple clothing and no amount of mockery has been able to break us of this passion.

I forgot
I forgot the story my husband told me. His grandmother ordered flowers for him to give to his prom date. When he picked them up, it was a bouquet of carnations and they made the shape and design of an American flag. He was flabbergasted. Told his grandmother he wouldn't take them.
I said, "What happened next?"
Husband, "She made me take them."
There is no way I'm not using that incident in a book some time.

The D2K Paranormal Junkies 2008 Challenge
I'll bite
My senior prom ended in misery. In fact, my prom experience was sooo bad, teachers use it to tell kids what NOT TO DO at prom.
In essence, my prom date was arrested.
A friend of mine asked me to the prom (we'd been friends since the 3rd grade) and every girl I knew had a mad crush on him (except me) so I thought "sure" it'll be fun. Got dressed up and then went to his house to leave. Now our prom was up in Yosemite National Park at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Gorgeous. We got there late, so missed the dinner. Date was drunk and smelled like a brewery. Oh, and my date thought it would be a good idea to bring more friends (who were NOT attending the prom) along for the ride up to the park. Added to the fact that the air conditioner did not work in the car so we had to drive with the windows down. There went my beautiful, carefully coifed 'do. So by the time we arrived I looked very windblown. So, a teacher notes that my date, uh, is drunk, and tries to apprehend him. My date grabs me and tells me to RUN. So I do. Through the forest. In high heels. In pitch dark. This was not easy and not advisable. In the end, we rogue prom attendees were caught. My date went to jail and my mom had to drive to Yosemite to pick me up. *sigh* Not the fairy tale ending I was hoping for.
Par for the course.

I didn't have a date for my senior prom so I asked a guy from a private high school. However, I had an allergic reation to the food and of course since I hadn't had an asthma attack in donkey's years, I didn't have my inhaler with me. I spent most of the eveing in the rest room with my dress unzipped in the backdown to my @$$, struggling to breathe. I was bright red on most of the skin exposed to view. A girl came in and asked in a loud whisper to her friend: "Gasp! Does she know her dress is unzipped in the bask?" If I had had any breath to spare, I would have responded: "Gasp! Do I really! What do you know? I was busy with this asthma attack and didn't notice the breeze!" My dress was lovely. Ice green, empress bustline, wide scooped neck, high collar in the back with trailers designed to be worn like scarves around my neck.

Proms
I don't think here in Canada as much emphasis is put on proms(maybe that just in my little world
) We never had banners all over the school advertising the prom, we didn't have to buy tickets, no guy picking us up with dad standing there with a shotgun eyeing date, no corsages. We had our high school graduation on two nights(that means two outfits) The first night were the award ceramonies and diplomas handed out. That night was the pink and purple taffetta dress that my grandmother made for me(hey wanted to be orginal
). My friends father was really good friends with a guy that owns a fleet of cars he rents out sothat night our ride was a vintage Rolls Royce (no pictures because it was 1987 before the age of digital cameras and I don't have a scanner) The next night was the dance. for this my dress of choice was a black satin skirt, pink and purple and black sequins halter top(remember 1987) then a black satin jacket over top. One of friends father had a vintage fire truck so or mode of transportation to the hall where dance was held was a ride on the firetruck. Later when time to leave after messing with th waitress a few times(we would take the glasses and bottles(gotta remember drinking age here is 19) off table and hide them under table then a few times during night we would put them all on the table all of sudden there were like 50 glasses and bottles on table)we fit 7 people in a rabbit

Oh, man. That sounds awful. I love the way you were still ready with the comeback even if you couldn't manage to get it out.
Your dress sounds gorgeous--ice green is a great color description. My mom and I dithered and debated over my purple hoop skirt atrocity because it cost $100. Neither of us had ever spent that much money on a dress in our lives and it just seemed so high.

That sounds great. My prom was in 1985 so I understand the style challenges.
I love the Rolls and the firetruck. What great memories.
I'm always surprised when my Canadian editor trips over something she doesn't recognize. I have this idea everything here is there and vice versa but that's not really true, is it? Our prom culture wasn't nearly as big as it is some places. We did have a dance and decorations, but it was pretty simple--dinner and a deejay.

prom night
Christa,
I'm in Canada too - Nova Scotia - and when I graduated from high school in 1985, it was pretty much the same as you describe. One night was the graduation ceremony at a local auditorium, with black gowns over our dresses. And another night was a dance. The prom/dance comittee decorated the gym. My boyfriend of 3 years (now my husband) bought me a corstage and took me out for dinner, then we went to the dance. I know there were other groups that got together first, but my having a boyfriend 5 years older than me, and being a bit of a nerd meant that I didn't fit well in high school with too many groups. We stayed at the dance for a while, but other than a last chance to say good bye to the friends I did have, it wasn't particularly memorable. I was also a base brat, my father being in the armed forces. My closest friends were also CF kids. The guys I considered friends went away to officer training, and once I moved off base when my father retired a year or two later, I lost contact with most of the people I had been in high school with. Don't recall seeing any of them at the university I went to, until my last year, when someone transferred from a different university to save boarding fees.
Now, I listen to some of my co-workers with children graduating high school, and I can't believe what they go through. Expensive dresses, limos, fancy dinners, and the proms aren't in school gyms any more. Just boggles the mind. And my eldest is only 4 years away from all that. Fortunately, my husband has several very nice vintage cars, much nicer than any limo! And both kids are boys, so its gotta be less money that kitting out a girl for a prom!
Lynne
Lynne
Lynne--how totally romantic that you were with your future husband during high school. I'm in awe that you can find someone and you can both grow and change but keep your love strong. It's such a powerful story.
I'm constantly grateful I have two boys. We have some issues about clothes because my younger son is a bit of a fashion plate. But really all he wants is new jeans, not more expensive stuff. Prom dresses...shudder.

Prom culture--great term. It
Prom culture--great term. It was very different in the early 70s from what my kids prom culture is like. I was a rebellious hippie-type and so I did not do the prom. I had plans for after high school and didn't want to get 'caught' with an unwanted pregnancy. In my graduating class of 540, the few girls interested in going on to college tended to stir clear of the prom.
My dds managed to adopt my "I have plans beyond high school" mentality and avoided the serious boyfriend thing in high school. My older dd and a girlfriend decided they would go and hangout together. When they found out one of their male classmates was unable to get a date, he offered to escort them both, so they made up a threesome. Listening to all the dad's during the walk-in was a hoot. My youngest dd is also doing the go-with-a-girlfriend thing, but my dd is wearing a lovely gown and the friend has rented a tux. Independent minded, self-confident children I am raising.

Proms
My own senior prom was very nice with nothing too exciting to report -- except the poor girl with fairly thick glasses who couldn't see the floor to ceiling sliding glass doors leading to the deck and slammed into them, knocking herself down. My dress was a blue empire waist dress with short puffy sleeves and sequined trim around the high waistline.
The one that sticks in my mind, however, was the senior prom of the cousin of my best friend. I had met her cousin at several of her family's gatherings. The best way I can describe my friend's cousin so that you can get a realistic picture is that he looked a lot like Popeye. He was thinnish, but he had the puffy, pouchy cheeks and tended to squint. (He had some condition that required that he be on steroids, which probably explains the cheeks.) His hair was very pale blond and quite thin, so he kind of had the bald look going on, too. Not exactly every girl's dream date. He lacked only the sailor suit and the bulging forearms. Oh yeah, and no pipe or tattoos that I could see.
Anyway, one day while at my friend's house, she started on the guilt thing. "My cousin David [name changed because I don't want to get any phone calls about this] really likes you. He's always talking about how nice you are. It's a shame, but I don't think he's going to be able to get a date for his prom. He'd love to ask you, but he doesn't thiink you'd ever go out with him." Yada, yada. What could I say? Of course I told her that if he couldn't find a date, I would go with him.
Well, he called me in January (for the prom in May), so I don't think he tried too hard. Regardless, I agreed, and he told me repeatedly that he was really excited. However, on the night of the prom, when we were going with two other couples, he was totally obnoxious. He started off by saying, "Well, gents, I think I'm the best looking one among us. Bet you feel pretty lucky to have snagged me, doncha Babe?" In an effort to keep the evening on an even keel, I just smiled weakly.
At the dance, he was constantly throwing out these snarky little "joking" comments that I found fairly insulting, like comments on women drivers and about people who went to my high school being freaks and brainaics, etc. I eventually couldn't hold my tongue and told him that if he didn't want to bring me, he certainly needn't have invited me all the way back in January, which finally shut him up. Once the music started, I thought maybe we could get out on the dance floor and not have to talk, but my dance date, of course, didn't want to dance. So, for most of the rest of the evening, we were the only couple (and I use the term loosely because, by that point, I was mostly ignoring him) sitting at the table. Finally, he decided to grace me with a dance, and I wished he hadn't. He apparently thought he was a great dancer, so he made these bold dance moves that looked a lot like he was having a spasm. I'm surprised someone didn't call the paramedics. Can't even remember what I wore that night, aside from the fact that it was yellow. (Maybe that's why I never wear yellow anymore!)
My stony silence must have gotten to him because he was more polite during the dinner afterward. I told him I had to be home early (an excuse) and made the 10 second run for the door as soon as the car stopped. The next day, he called me, apologizing profusely and telling me he was sorry for being such a jerk. He told me how nice I was and how much he liked me and was so proud to have had me as his date. Blah, blah. He was so contrite it was pathetic. Then he said, "I'm really sorry. I know you'd never consider going out with me again, and I couldn't blame you." So, guess what? I felt sorry for him and said I would. (Can you see the big "S" on my forehead glowing all the way up in Ithaca?)
The next date was to some sort of car race with a group of volunteer firefighters to which he belonged. To be fair, he was very nice and exceedingly solicitous that night, but being a couple just wasn't happening for us. The other women spent the evening telling me what nice things they'd heard about me and trying to get me to join the Ladies Auxilliary so that we could go to the station and wait for "our men" to come back from the fires. I knew then that it had to be our last date, or I was going to eventually find myself in a pity marriage. Ugh! What a nightmare!
I guess I should be happy, though. At least he wasn't arrested for anything at the prom!

There's no way I can beat
There's no way I can beat you're husband's story and his grandmother's flowers. That's hilarious. You have to put that in a book at some point.
I'm not entering the contest because I have all your books and love them. But here's my non-prom prom night story:
My mother hated the loser, jerk face boyfriend I dated during senior year. And she refused to give me any money towards a prom night with him. (Of course the 17-year-old idiot that I was thought he was the best boyfriend ev--er and love him to distraction...) Anywho, I was working part time at the mall and had saved up for a killer dress. The loser jerk face was supposed to be working at Roy Rogers to cover the rest. Of course since he was a loser, jerk face he ended up not coming through. Long story short, I spent prom night hanging with a friend who was a junior, her boyfriend from another school, and one of his friends. We rode around town in her boyfriend's car and guess who saw us? Loser Jerk Face, of course! When I saw him later that night, I found out that he'd decided I was cheating on him with this other guy and he broke up with me, even though we should have been at the prom that night and then I wouldn't have been in the car with the other cutie... Oh well... All in all it was a pretty interesting non-prom prom night. I eventually got back together with loser, jerk, face, because I was young and stupid and loved him to distraction... And it took me forever to realize that he was a loser jerk face. But I learned... eventually... around about my second year of college... But that's another story...
By the way, I am waiting rather impatiently for THE BOYFRIEND'S BACK. Lover's reunited is one of my all-time favorite romance themes. Maybe I should write one about a loser, jerk, face boyfriend who finally... nah... never mind... I'll just read yours. LOL.

Ellen - What a great topic. My prom was in 1982. I ended up going with a guy named John Johnson who worked with me at Sears in the Hardware Department. when no one asked me. Funny thing, because John was very cute, in college (he was 21), played on the school baseball team and he was sweet. I think he felt sorry for me ( well, I know he liked me, but I think he thought I was too young for him!) Anyway, he rented a silver tux and looked so handsome. I wore a long purple dress. We had a nice dinner, then went to the dance. Everyone kept telling me how cute my date was. We danced and had a great time - and he was completely sober. Some of the other guys were so drunk they were ridiculous. He took me home just after midnight and kissed me goodnight. In hindsight, it was the perfect prom night.

I love hearing about kids who go their own way. I wish I'd been that self-confident or even more aware that I had choices. I went along with everything. Interesting about your own experience, too. Now I'm imaging a story where a woman made the choices you did when she was young and is now middle-aged and throws a dance for her friends. That could be a lot of fun!

Oh my gosh, are you ever a nice person!!! Holy cow. I'm in awe of the poise you had way back when also.
I'm laughing about the Ladies Auxiliary. With everything we know about women and our capabilities, it's amazing organizations ever thought about excluding us from "active" duty, isn't it? Not that we don't need support teams for our firefighters and other groups, but men and women can both be active or supportive--just depends on the person.

Prom
Well I graduated in 1966 and the girls all wore white dresses back then. Mine was made by the local dressmaker as my mother was working full time and didn't feel up to making it herself. I couldn't even sew an apron right in grade seven so there was no way I could make my dress. The boy I was dating at the time came home for the prom and brought one of his friends who was dating a girlfriend of mine--double date. His car was a Chevrolet, a big solid car with big fins, painted purple and white because I liked the color purple. Nothing much exciting happened. I'm trying to remember if I dated him again or not as I left home for a summer job and when I went to university it was in a different city than he was in at the time. I think we just drifted apart. However, my girlfriend married her date about ten years later.
I do remember being at an earilier prom and we had just had a talk about mental telepathy. Since most of the younger girls and guys just showed up at the dance unpartnered you just sort of waited for someone to ask you to dance. I sat there hoping for Peter to ask me. I sent out all these vibes and sure enough Peter came and asked me to dance. Only trouble was there were two Peters and it was Peter S. who asked me to dance and not Peter C. who I thought I was sending the vibes out to.
Ellen I am waiting patiently for your new book. I have your other two as you know so I hope who ever wins either book will enjoy it as much as I did.
I'm loving the stories about prom night.

I went to the Prom
once. My high school bf and I had dated since I was in ninth grade. It was total puppy love. He didn't "do prom" so we never went to his, he was three years older than me. I ended up talking him in to going to mine. I had picked out a simple black velvet dress that I loved. It had a two inch strip of sheer material in the center which in my 16 year old mind made it sexy.
My mother had other ideas and bought me a red and gold beaded pageant dress. Yes, I said PAGEANT dress that weighed a ton and was itchy. I had matching red shoes. Now, I'm not a girly girl and didn't even give my hair any thought until the day of prom. I called my cheerleading sponsor and she drove over, painted my nails red, smeared some make-up on my face with hooker red lipstick and pulled my hair up in to a pretty french twist. I was uncomfortable but felt pretty at the same time.
I was looking forward to my date getting there. We had agreed to skip dinner out before hand because he had a college class and was crunched for time. Our moms had agreed that I (my daddy) would pay for the prom tickets and flowers and my bf would pay for the pictures. Yeah. That didn't go over well. He was so adverse to getting his picture taken in his tux (but at the time I thought he just didn't want a picture with me) that he literally TORE THE MONEY UP and left it on his parents' bed. Jerk.
I was crushed but made the best of it by dancing with my friends and coercing him in to a few slow dances. Half way through I went to the bathroom and stripped off the pantyhose and girdle thing my mom insisted I wear. I think she was trying to ensure I wouldn't have sex. Which we weren't. LOL
Needless to say, the next year he and I were still dating and I didn't even ask. Mom gave me $250.00 to NOT go to the prom, said it was cheaper than me going. Which I happily took and bought a pair of hiking shoes and a new fleece coat with.
The good news is I'm not bitter but look back on it and laugh.
Ellen,
Is "nice person" a euphemism for "sap"? I just had a really hard time hurting anyone's feelings. When he was being a jerk, I could put him in his place a little, but when he was being nice and so contrite, I just couldn't say no. I went on more than my share of pity dates because I empathized with how tough it must be to approach someone and risk rejection (and ego crushing) to ask her out.
Kaelee, speaking of your white prom dress, has anyone noticed the difference in prom dress styles? When I was prom age, it was all about tulle and satin. Girls were pretty much covered up. My DD graduated from HS last year, and her prom dress was more along the lines of what the women wear to the Oscars. She looked lovely (see below), but those dresses were considered much too "grown up" when I was a senior in HS.

We recently received a DVD with designer prom gowns. A DVD! Sent to a high school girl. Dress for ridiculously high priced gowns. I have to say that my dd got her gown from her sister who picked it up for a song on ebay. And big sis' gown was one of those tulle gowns from 1957 (her Aunt's prom dress) because my girls are into vintage clothing.

I loved your stories. I read the part about the Peter mix-up to my sons and they laughed about it. Glad times have changed so now if you want to dance with a particular fellow you can march up and ask him. When I was a single girl living in Seattle I used to go out dancing with a married couple I was friends with. I LOVE to dance even though I'm not very good at it. We'd go to bars or dance clubs and have a blast. I asked a lot of guys to dance in those days. I was dating the guy I eventually married but he lived in New Jersey. Kind of useless as a dance partner on a normal Saturday night in Seattle.
Love the purple and white car. What a scene that must have been with the four of you all dressed up and the car so spiffy! Thanks for sharing your stories!

Hi,
The dress part of your story is so perfect from a mother-daughter point of view. My mom and I had quite a few of those moments when we were pretty far apart on what we thought was the right outfit. I remember her making me wear a shawl with a dress to a dance. It was my grandmother's. I love the image of you taking the stockings and girdle off in the ladies' room. Who hasn't either done that or wanted to?
I'm glad you found the humor in your story. High school. Sigh.

JV--your daughter looks gorgeous! I agree, though, the dresses girls wear now are very different from the ones my friends and I wore and a lot different from the ones a decade or two before my prom. I like girlfriend's closets
Mine was in my grandmother's closet. It was probably my mom's. I really loved that ridiculous dress.

My two most fascinating friends didn't go to their proms either. I think I mentioned earlier that I wish I hadn't been such a follower in high school. I wouldn't have missed much if I'd skipped either junior or senior prom.
Thanks for stopping by to read.

Hey Ellen
My prom story is more of the "Boyfriend's Back" part of the story--in other words, it's post prom. I went to my junior prom with a twin. I don't remember his brother going. We definitely didn't double date, but I think our prom may have been the last thing this kid did without his brother. Why, you may ask? Well, because fifteen years later I'm watching Inside Edition on TV with my husband and hokey smokes--there's my prom date. (It was kind of fun to casaully say, "Hey...that guy was my junior prom date," to my husband.) My prom date and his brother married identical twins at the twin festival. Okay, that was weird, but then he's back a couple of years later, this time on Discovery Health where he and his brother are living in the same house with their wives and kids. The show is about their wives gettting makeovers so that they no longer look identical and can express themselves in a more "singular" way. I think I may have seen my date on a third show after that, but the memory is hazy. He sure seemed to show up on TV a lot for a guy from Podunk, Idaho.

Jeannie--you always have the most amazing stories. Seriously? Identical twins? If you'd been a twin, maybe you could have married him and had a TV career instead of your glamorous teacher/novelist life? Just think!!
I briefly dated a twin in high school. He was hot. He dyed his hair red, perhaps to create a more "singular" look. I was with him on the boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ during our senior week at the beach when I went to a fortune teller who told me I'd marry a red-haired man and have 8 children. I wanted to tell her he was normally a brown-haired guy, the red was just temporary, but I decided not to confuse her. I'm kind of glad the 8 kids didn't materialize either although I was quite keen on that many at the time.
The twin festival, huh? I feel a little Google session is in order to research this amazing, and new to me, festival.

Hmmm my prom
The year was 1965 and you HAD to go to the prom. Well I was never popular or attractive in high school. I was heavyset and excrutiatingly shy and was not part of the in crowd. I invited the nephew of the woman I babysat for and he agreed to take me. He lived in one of the Carolina's and came to visit regularly with his aunt and we were friends. I found a beautiful yellow taffeta and white lace empire waist dress and had a matching shawl. Had my hair and nails done and was ready to spread my wings. The night of the prom his aunt called me hysterical because he was not coming. She and my mother located a friend of that family to take me. I was devasted. I didn't talk to the guy the whole night, didn't get the necessary pics taken and asked him to take me home early. My friends that knew the guy that bailed crowded me into the ladies room and we had a cry fest. I hated everything about high school and this was the cherry on the cake. My daughter thank goodness is gorgeous and went to 2 Junior Proms and 3 Senior proms and had a wonderful time. I never told her about my disaster and never saw the guy again.
Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!

Oh, man, that's quite a story. I'm so happy your daughter had a great high school experience. Her mom sounds like a pretty brave and determined person, though. We'll just borrow a phrase from Gwyneth earlier in this thread and refer to the no-show guy as Loser Jerk Face.
The thing that bugs me about the loser jerk faces in my past is how much power I gave them. I had a guy who dumped me a few days before a dance because he said he didn't feel like buying dress shoes. I was upset about this guy who clearly lacked all manners and wasn't even smart enough to think of a good lie! Looking back, I wish I'd given him a piece of my mind instead of a piece of my heart. I eventually wised up, thank goodness!
Take care and thanks for sharing your story,

Ellen, sorry, no purple
Ellen, sorry, no purple prom dress for me. My junior prom, I wore a white dress. I took a "borrowed" date that year because I didn't have a boyfriend. I "borrowed" a very handsome brother from one of my friends who attended a difference school. Everyone at my school was quite surprised to see the geek (that was me) show up with a pretty good-looking guy. Ha, take that you snobby...well... <G>
My senior prom, I recycled the same dress, but changed it up by adding a PINK ribbon to it. I've tried to add the photo here, but I'm not sure how to do it since it's not posted on the internet. Maybe I'll try to put in on my Facebook page. My senior year I was dating my hubby. His tux arrived late to the store, and the pants were too long, so he has baggy pants at the bottom. LOL.
He was a year behind me in school, so the next year I went to HIS senior prom. I got a new dress that year. <G> But it was ice blue.

Southern Belle
My favorite color was purple, but I didn't have a purple dress. My date wore top hat to got with my Southern Bellle theme. The fan was a must have to go with my dress. I took a friend to the dance. Couldn't go dateless.

Got to love it when you can stick your tongue out at people and kind of go "so there" like those guys all through high school that made fun of me cause I didn't do the popular thing but that I run into 5 years later and those same guys are asking me out

Another person who married their prom date. I love this! Thanks so much for sharing your photo. Your dress looks so exactly like what a lot of my friends had. Love it.
I didn't get my first perm until after the prom, but, boy, did I make up for lost time. I fit the term "big 80's hair" to a T!
Thanks so much for your story and pictures!

I did have a good time. A
I did have a good time. A friend of mine has a video tape of me doing a very 80's dance. Can you imagine what I looked like in the dress doing "The Bird"? What was I thinking?!!

I agree with Kaelee, Star, your post has me laughing. I remember the Bird quite well--it was popular at the dances at a fraternity I liked. I may surf over to Youtube to find some video--I'm sure someone has uploaded a clip--just to revisit the good old days.
Thanks,

No prom for me, waa
My D&D buddy and I had it all arranged--for at least a couple months--that we would go to the prom together and hang out with the other super-cool dungeons-and-dragons players in our group. Then four days before the prom it occurred to me that I had a ballet recital that night, and they might notice my absence in the spotlight during my pointe solo. So I crushed the boy and several years later he came out of the closet. Although I'm sure the two events are entirely unrelated.
I've already got all your books, Ellen, so you don't need to include me in the draw!
