She Had Me at Woof

SophieFav.JPG

Meet the newest member of our family! This is Sophie, a 12-week-old Havense (a type of Bichon, native to Cuba (in fact, the only breed native to that country), who joined our family on Saturday. DH and I went in to look at a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and I was under strict orders to JUST LOOK.

We already have two kids, two dogs and a cat. Our other two dogs, a Golden retriever and a German Short Haired Pointer, are pretty big. The retriever is old (13) and poor thing has a lot of arthritis and benign tumors that make it hard for her to get around. The pointer is all DH's dog, a male with a lot of energy.

I have wanted a lapdog FOREVER. Neither of our current dogs are lapdogs, though the pointer thinks he is ;-). I had researched breeds and the CKCS, and Bichons, seemed to fit our family needs pretty well. But DH was dead set against a third dog.

So we go to look at the CKCS, but the last one left is a male. No good, since we have a male dog. Then we see this little Havanese, and she had my heart before I even held her. DH took about five seconds longer to win over ;-).

Sophie is super friendly, really, really lovable, and already knows one trick--kisses. She'll give you a kiss on command, and has worked pretty well at the housebreaking thing. Her couple of accidents have been by the door. I adore her!

And yes, I already bought her a cute little coat ;-)

She is SOOO precious!

Oh Shirley!

She is SOOO precious!  While I mostly foster and have bichons (see my page for pics of own 3 on previous blog posts ), I DID foster one Havanese.  They are fabulous dogs.  When I got my first Bichon about 16 years ago, I wanted a Havanese, but at that point they were so new in the US that I could only find them in California.. while I was in CT.  So I started my love affair with bichons...

But she is adorable.. I don't think it would have even taken a "woof" for me to fall in love!

Can't wait to hear all the stories I bet are coming with her... Hey!  Maybe a new book with a Havanese, HUH? Wink

Adorable

She is absolutely adorable!

so cute!

She's lovely--congrats!

So cute, too!!

Crystal, your bichons are so cute, too!! I just love these dogs. I had seen some bichons at another place before I got Sopie and they were adorable.

The cool thing about her is how unique she is. Lots of people have never heard of the breed here in the Midwest so every time i go somewhere I get to talk about her :-).

And I bought her another outfit today as well as even more hair bows, LOL.

What a photogenic cutie

Sophie is such a cute thing. And will undoubtedly not be spoiled at all (only two outfits so farLaughingLaughing). I personally like mine a little bigger with my brittanies at about 45-50 pounds each and they are (in their opinions) lap dogs. Our little Norwich Terrier (15 pounds) is the only dog who doesn't like to be up on the furniture. Enjoy the housebreaking!!!!

My Pointer Can Relate...

He's about 45 pounds and he thinks he's a lapdog, too. He's WAY too big for that, that's for sure!!

DH loves Brittany Spaniels. That's what we would have gotten if they'd had any when we went to the shelter at the time we got the pointer. He had one when he was a kid and said she was the best dog ever.

My parents have Springer

My parents have Springer Spaniels.  Luke is huge, nearly the size of a Golden Retriever, and he thinks he's a lap dog.Surprised When he gets scared, he tries to climb into my mother's lap!

Our Brittanies

As I sit here right now, my youngest britt is on the sofa at the end of the office staring out the window, so he can be the first to know if anyone is here. I finally gave up on keeping them off cetain pieces of furniture.....same old story dad lets them get away with it and mom doesn't, so we listen to dad! If you (your husband) ever decide you need a brittany, there are two nationwide recue sites for brittanies. Our last two came to us that way. Many are shelter rescues.

DH and I decided...

That if we ever did get another dog after these that we'd likely get a Brit for him because he loves them so much. Since I've picked the last two pets (the cat and now Sophie), I owe him a choice :-). I'll keep that rescue organization in mind. We have a great shelter here where I live, too, but knowing there's an org. just for Brits is good, too.
