6th book in series in Ship of the Line,  Lieutenant Bush and Horatio Hornblower have many sea adventures with an inadequately trained press gang crew on his ship, he fairly not with force, trains them to be fighting sailors.. The first lieutenant Bush and the midshipmen used contests to train all the men in mast climbing which can be scarry but in compition it is less so. He writes so you feel likeyour on the ship.
