Silent In The Grave by Deanna Raybourn
Wow, what a wild book! I listened to half of this story while assembling Merri's new computer desk, and the rest while commuting to work. Merri (aka Paisley) and Debiw were both reading it in print at the same time.
Lots of twists and turns along the way to a surprise ending, and an interesting tale of life 100 years ago (1886). One part of the story touched on an interesting bit of British tradition regarding the ravens at the Tower of London. The Tower ravens belong to the Queen and one turns up in Lady Julia Grey's household in London with the potential for causing quite a scandal if discovered.
What is NOT mentioned in the story is the legend that says the British Empire will fall when the last raven in the Tower of London dies. This is taken so seriously even today that there are people in the British military whose job is to care for the ravens at the Tower. When I visited London Tower in the 70's we were told the legend was centuries old and originated with a curse placed on the Empire. Today it has been researched quite a bit and the first documented note of ravens at the Tower is in 1885, interestingly one year before the story takes place. The historical tie-in, while subtle, is pretty cool!

This was just an incredible book! Thanks for that info on the Tower. I was very impressed at the way the author skillfully intertwined historical information into the storyline.

This was a lot of fun to read with both of you. It's rare that Glenn and I read the same book at the same time. It was fun to hear a bit of the audiobook in the background. It seemed to me that the narrator of the audiobook was good at bringing out the humor more than I felt reading it.
