SINGING A DUET...

Christmas Angel for the Billionair US PAPERBACKe.jpg

...or rather writing one, since even the people who love me beg
me not to sing.

It was nearly two years ago – another November – when I had a breakfast meeting with my editors at the plush Churchill Hotel in the west end of London to discuss what I’d write in the year ahead.

I had all kind of ideas floating around in my head but the eds had only one. A duet. They wanted a duet for November/December and please, please, please could one of them be a Christmas book.

I resisted.

My worst experience with a book was a Christmas title.

It had a gorgeous cover, one of my prettiest, but the truth of the matter is that you can’t sell a Christmas title when the hero and heroine are standing under a palm tree wearing nothing but swimsuits – even if the palm tree is
strung with tiny Christmas lights. And, let’s face it, when it comes to scheduling, not just for the its first outing,
but for all those foreign sales, there are only two months of the year when a Christmas title will fit the bill.

But the last time I did a Christmas duet – unintentionally – it was, apparently, a big hit and RomanceHQ wanted a repeat.

The really big problem about writing a duet is that it’s really hard work. They have to be delivered promptly, close enough together to be schedule in consecutive months. And Christmas won’t wait. But what can a starving writer, caught in a pincer movement between her editor and the series editor, say? With her crispy bacon and scrambled rapidly cooling in front of her there is only one answer. "If I say “yes”, can I eat?"

At which point we come to the second problem with writing a duet. They have to be linked in some way. One story twisted around the other. You have to think of two books at the same time and they have to overlap in some way. Which leads to other problems. Set up a scene in one book and you have to deliver it in the other.

But the books were written, the duet was given a name “Trading Places” and the strap line written –

Annie wanted anonymity
Lydia wanted the spotlight -
They both found love.

So here we are. It’s November and first up is Annie’s story, CHRISTMAS ANGEL FOR THE BILLIONAIRE.   Having been in the media spotlight all her life, she’s desperate for the chance to just walk down a street, stop at Starbucks for a coffee, check out the latest High St fashions without being pursued by the paparazzi. What she needs is a place holder, someone for the media – and her over-protective grandfather’s bodyguards -- to watch while she disappears for a while. And then she comes face to face with her “look alike”, Lydia Young. The open road
beckons and things are going swimmingly until she misses her turning and ends up in the Saxon’s kitchen being played off in a battle of wills by George Saxon and his teenage daughter.

As for Lydia, she’s having a ball until she discovers that she, too, is caught in the middle of a struggle between a divided family. More about that next month.

For now I have a 2-in-1 UK edition of Christmas Angel for the Billionaire, twinned with Jessica Hart’s wonderful Under the Boss’s Mistletoe to give away.

For a chance to win, tell me who you’d like to change places with and why. I’ll pick the winner on Friday.

I would like to change

I would like to change places with a retiree with a good-enough pension. At almost-50, I'm tired of working and I want to stop, but we have a mortgage to pay and the bills come in every month like clockwork. So, unless I change places with a retiree, I have to keep working.

Trading places

Both stories sound interesting - looking forward to reading them!

Who to trade places with? My instinct is no one because things that seem good from here might not be so fun in their shoes. Could it be me but with a bit more money, a few less bills and a whole lot less attitude from my four-year-old? Sounds wonderful... Smile

The grass might be greener -- but on the other hand might not - gambit, Bec.  Wise woman.

The only problem with that is losing ten years.  Believe me -- having lost them already -- I can tell you that the aches and niggles associated with being pensionable in no way compensates for being able to stay in bed in the morning.  But then I don't get to stay in bed in the morning.  I have to be up at six to keep my eds happy!

I wouldn't stay in bed any later.  But I would get a lot of reading and DIY projects done.

Christmas stories & trading places

I love Christmas stories, I don't care what time of the year it is. Since I have rheumatoid arthritis and need both knees replaced ( keep putting it off) I would like to change places with somebody in better shape than I am. They can be my age (57) I don't care, just in better shape. Of course I wouldn't wish my condition on anybody else so alas, no changing places.

change places

I would like to change places with someone who lives somewhere that I don't need winter clothes!  The growing season would be longer!

Oh me, I love Christmas

Oh me, I love Christmas stories. . . I save them up for December once October rolls around, but if I happen to get any Christmas themed books any other time of the year, I'll read them then.  And two stories in one of any type are even better! :)

Who to trade places with though. . . right now, I'll simply trade places with someone on the other side of the planet from me where it's 2:52 am instead of pm, so I can take a nap for a long time! :)

 Lois

Prince and Pauper

I love stories like this. They usually make you feel satisfied with just who you are.  I can't think of anyone I'd like to trade places with. I wouldn't mind having a bit more money but I'm happy enough being me.

I can honestly say that I don't think I would change places with any one. The Lord has blessed me in so many ways. I feel that we all have a path that is designed to make us stronger and make us the person we are. So I am very happy just being ME.

Linda

Bless you, Linda.  My hips are beginning to play me up and the dh has an arthritic knee so I have a tiny idea of what you're suffering.   Wish I had some fairy dust to make it all go away.

Bless you, another contented soul.

This is just lovely but isn't there anyone out there who wants to queen for a week, or to trade places with some world leader and shake things up a bit?

Queen for a week?

My English Granny was a staunch Royal watcher and she kept scrapbooks of all the Royal articles she could clip from newspapers, Ladies Home Journal, McCalls etc.  Prince Charles was born about 5 month after me and as a young girl I used to dream about being the "Older " woman in his life. I'm not to sure about switching places with Camilla right now and quite frankly my husband is a lot better looking than Charles. However I would love a week in Sandringham so would go for it if my husband and I could do a double switch.

ROFL :)

I get your point and I shouldn't think anyone would want to swtich with a lady in her 80s.  I should have put Queen in inverted commas.  A soap queen, diva, a supermodel -- the modern "queens".  And perhaps maybe put a time limit on it.  For a week, maybe, like Annie and Lydia.

Now wouldn't that be fun.  A week being treated as a royal, but I think I might choose Windsor Castle as my residence.  I used to go there often when I was a little girl (first memory being taken to see the flowers when Queen Mary died).

These days I think you have to pay to go through the gates, but the grounds always used to be open to the public so that you could walk around, see the changing of the guards, etc. although you always had to pay to go into the State Apartments when they're open -- obviously not when HM is hosting a state visit.

The Waterloo Room is stunning and Queen Mary's Dolls House is breathtaking.  All the miniature books in the library were handwritten by famous authors of the day as a gift to Queen Mary who loved miniatures.  The wine bottles in the cellar are even filled with real wine.

Can't believe imaginations aren't running riot here!

Everyone is being very well behaved here!

I would love to trade with that mysterious woman Cleopatra, I would love a day in her shoes to see the Egyptian empire at its greatest and also to experience Mark Anthony......

Woo-hoo

The sultry Cleo and the sexy Mark Anthony.  I'm liking this one.

So peeps, historical characters, fictional characters -- which bad girl would really, really like to be?

Thanks so much!

I'm another one who wouldn't change my life. However, I wouldn't object to living like royalty for a week, say somewhere warm like the Teak Palace in Bangkok. Smile I was there years ago and loved it.

BTW, I must thank you for making my day yesterday. I received the lovely little calendar (two actually, so I'm passing one along to my Mom Smile) with the beautiful cover for your book, Her Desert Dream. Thanks fo much!

Wishing you all the best,

Gail Fuller Smile

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle sounds lovely.  So if we're changing places with historic figures, I wouldn't mind being Grace Kelly for a bit. I want some time after she was married. She always seemed to be so lovely to me.

Can't wait to Read it

Sounds like a very pleasant read. I love reading Christmas romance novels they fit the season. Imagine if we could switch places with someone that looked just like us for a bit. Um that actually might be nice be someone else for a change. But sooner or later would have to go back to your life back to normal. But to have someone live your life for a while I would love that right now.Cool

Well, I know who traded

Well, I know who traded places in these stories. I know how well they turned out and Liz, you rock! Both stories were wonderful--you found a way to...

wait for it...

Whew, Bangkok.  That is exotic.  Sounds wonderful.

Glad the mini purse calendars arrived.  I could just get 2 in under the post weight and yes, the idea was for you to pass one on.  Anyone whose won a comp with me in the past should have received one, but if  you'd like one, just send me an email.
