I’ve been thinking about what to blog about in my inaugural Super Blog post—I considered so many ideas but nothing really grabbed me. (Maybe because I had a book out in May and I blogged a lot that month. My blog well is depleted.)
Then I thought about one of the traditions I love best from the Superromance board here at eHarlequin. Snippets!
What are snippets? It's when we all post a few lines from whatever we are reading or writing—a great way to sample the diverse writing voices and styles and reading interests here on eHarlequin. In fact, snippets are so much fun, Sam Hunter created a Snippetathon thread.
An added bonus to Snippets is that I don't have to think of what to write, instead I get to read what everyone else is up to!
So let’s do snippets today. I’ll grab the “ground rules” Sam uses in her post and we’ll get started. Remember, anyone can post a piece of their work or the book they’re reading right now!
Ground rules:
- Snips are no more than two paragraphs from a book or WIP. They could even just be a few lines.
-
Snips should be PG or at most R-17 since we're in a public forum
- No crit or feedback--this is just for sharing and fun.
-
Compliments and Gushing are completely allowed
Let's Snip!

The Boyfriend's Back Superromance May 2009

Header Promotion

Starting off
I'll start since I'm here. This is from the first page of a proposal that may never see the light of day. Matt is the hero and this is his point of view as he looks at his friend, Oliver, who's been "left at the altar."
Oliver’s pain showed in the slump of his shoulders, in the droop of his boutonniere, in the wilt around the edges of his bouquet of pink peonies. Hell, Oliver’s kilt looked sad and that was quite a feat because the kilt was a hard line festive garment in Matt’s opinion. If a guy’s kilt was drooping, that guy was, by definition, in bad shape.
Who's next?

What I'm reading
I'm reading Sing Them Home by Stephanie Kallos. I'm not exactly sure what I think about it, but there is certainly some good writing in it. In the book, Hope, the mother of the three main characters was caught up in a hurricane and disappeared. They say "she went up," and they've spent the next twenty or so years waiting for her to come down. Here's a snip:
Like most siblings they are different in many ways, but idiosyncratically alike in others. All three of them abstain from the use of blow-dryers. They spend inordinate amounts of money on shoes. None of them have ever seen The Wizard of Oz. A sense of humor eludes them.
Their mother went up, she never came down.
If only she had a different name, they often think.

This is also from a proposal that's on Wanda's desk right now.
And while technically, this is 3 paragraphs...I couldn't figure out how else to break it. <G>
He dragged the empty stool from beside her, positioning it on the opposite side of the island. "Okay, Amelia. I figure you must want something. So, here's the million-dollar question: what?"
She paused, then set down her mug, rummaging in her purse. "Nothing more than you gave thirteen years ago." Plastic crinkled and she placed a wrapped specimen cup next to her coffee.
"What the hell?" Finn jumped up, palms facing her. "Whoa, whoa. Wait a minute here. Number one, I gave at the office. Number two, I don't do that kind of thing anymore."

Ellen and Susan, I love the snippets! I needed a chuckle this morning - thanks
Here's a snippet from my WIP which will be released sometime in 2010.
“It doesn’t have to mean anything, Faith,” he said, humor lacing his deep voice, his breath stirring the loose tendrils of hair by her ear. “It’s just a kiss. Just to keep my streak alive.”
Still smiling, he slowly closed the distance between them. She kept her eyes on his as he brushed his mouth against hers. By God, if she was going to be kissed by a man for the first time in over four years, she was damn well going to do it with her eyes open.
I'm looking forward to reading everyone's snippets!

Great snippets!
This is a snippet from my latest DATE WITH DESTINY over on the Write Stuff boards (following the rebel with 3 paragraphs!). I tried to find something from my latest ms, but I couldn't find one that was PG-13!
Frustration clawed at Vance. “I’m going to come closer. I have a first aid kit with me. I need to check out your injuries.” He started walking toward her, slowly, just as he would’ve if she were an injured animal.
No response, but at least she wasn’t backing away any more. He drew closer to her, and things became horrifyingly clear. She wasn’t wearing shoes. She wasn’t dressed for hiking. Her clothes were sliced cleanly, not torn jaggedly. And there were two large handprint-shaped bruises wrapped around her neck.
She hadn’t fallen. She’d been beaten.

Cowboy Comes Back
Ooh--snippets!
This is from Cowboy Comes Back--my July release. Libby and Kade grew up together. She's tough and self protective and still hasn't recovered from Kade betraying her ten years before.
"Libby..."
The way he said her name sent a small tingle through her body. And it pissed her off. "Just keep your distance and I'll keep mine. I think you owe me that much, Kade." She opened the truck door, putting a barrier between them. "It was nice to meet your daughter."
Talk about plans being derailed. She'd come on the offensive and had left on the retreat. That wasn't the way she normally did things, but that was the way she was doing them today.

Oh, I love the Snippets game!
...and such great ones so far! Here’s one from my June release, THE COWBOY’S SECOND CHANCE:
Maggie hesitated. “I don’t want to take your last one.”
“This is my last one.” He gestured with the bottle in his left hand. A smirk he couldn’t stop pulled at the corner of his mouth. If he was out of here, he wasn’t going to make it easy for her.
(Yes, Ellen --- that is front the porch scene!)
And since I'm re-reading the revisions on my Jan 2010 release, THE SHERIFF’S SECRET WIFE, here’s a snippet from that:
“Gage, answer me. Do you remember us getting married?”
He tightened his grip on the wallet, turned around and found her standing directly behind him. “The actual ceremony? No. But unlike you—” he couldn’t stop from reaching out and brushing his fingers against her neck. “—I can guarantee the honeymoon was fantastic.”

Lady Killer by Kathleen Creighton
I would like to leave a snippet from Kathleen's book Lady Killer. If I shouldn't feel free to erase it. Or tell me and I'll erase it. I feel this scene has some powerful emotion which I like in books. Hope it's not too long.
"Sobbing herself now, Brooke reached the cougar's enclosure, and gripping the wire with both hands, she stared in disbelief at the scene beyond the fence. Daniel, with his back to her, her child, holding a rake aloft like a battle sword and a folded saddle blanket over his other arm like a shield, facing down a full-grown mountain lion. Ahd the mountain lion, teeth bared, screaming and snarling in fury as she backed slowly toward the door to her holding cage, pausing now to swipe at the air with her claws.
'Daniel!' His name felt ripped from her throat by forces outside herself.
He didn't turn, but she heard his breathless 'I'm okay, Mom.'"

I had fun with that one, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! (And thanks for posting the link -- that's sweet!)
I'm hoping all the practice I'm doing on these different writing challenges (Pass the Plot, Date with Destiny, Big Finish 2) pays off with getting the same kind of tension in my mss -- and, of course, catching the eye of an editor one of these days!! I've got a sub going to Spice Briefs soon (hopefully, this week or next), then back to my next try at Supers. That story is about 50% wriitten, but I know the rest...I just need to get the words on paper.
I love reading all of these, but you're killin' me -- I'm afraid my TBR pile is going to be huge!!
Ellen, I love how Matt is so worried about Oliver...but in SUCH a guy kinda way. LOL. I hope it *does* get to see the light of day!
Susan, I almost spewed about "gave at the office". Great image! I can just see the panic on his face.
Jeannie, I love these two lines: "She'd come on the offensive and had left on the retreat. That wasn't the way she normally did things, but that was the way she was doing them today. " LOVE. IT.
Wow, Beth and Christyne! All three of those snippets are smokin' hot!

Hurray for snippets!
Ellen, what a cool idea! I love all the snippets already posted, and am scribbling titles madly for my must-read list!
Here's a snippet, then, from my July Super. TEXAS WEDDING is the sequel to TEXAS BABY, and it's a marriage of convenience book.
Of course it was too late, technically. She knew that. He had the moral right to tear this piece of paper into a dozen pieces and fling it in her face. Many might think he had the moral right to shove her onto the waiting bed and force her to do whatever he wanted.
But surely he wouldn't. Surely even the volcano of anger that had been simmering between them for more than a decade wouldn't blow that high. Surely it hadn't taken the laughing boy who used to dance with her down by Green Fern Pool and turned him into a monster.
What I'm reading right now...a long, incredibly convoluted but fabulous novel by Kate Morton called THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN. Cornwall, Australia, fairy tales, kidnappings, mysteries, abandoned cottages on the edge of a cliff... such rich writing! Here's a snipped from that one!
He smiled back.
Then he led her to sit by him on a fallen gum trunk, smooth and white, and he leaned to whisper in her ear. Transferred the secret he and her mother had kept for seventeen years. Waited for the flicker of recognition, the minute shift in expression as she registered what he was telling her. Watched as the bottom fell out of her world and the person she had been vanished in an instant.
Can't wait for more to be posted!

oh a snippet!
So far I've loved the snippets! I've even added books to my TBR/TBB (to be bought) pile/list! Right now I'm not reading anything...I know I know scandalus! But we are headed to a friends for the weekend and I didn't want to start another book and then not be able to finish it till we got back. However I do have quite a few WIP's...maybe if I concentrated on only one I'd finish one? Maybe? huh? Oh well.
After reading through my wip's looking for a snippet I could share and not finding one, I'm thinking more and more I was not meant to be a writer. Barring the characters that won't quit jabbering in my head, I haven't finished a story in, well I don't know how long. ANYWAY...griping aside I finally found 2 snippets that I'm not too embarased to share, and that are rated at least R-17, I had a few others but they weren't R-17
...so here we go.
Snippet #1 -This would be a paranormal story, the hero (still unnamed) is a dream guardian, an angel like being that was created to keep humans safe from those that would kill humans in their dreams. They are not human, even though some look it, and his greatest wish was to become human to be with the heroine whom he fell in love with. (Yes it does actually end in a HEA)
I sat there holding her dieing body in my arms and screamed my rage and anguish into the heavens, wondering how this could have happened and why I wasn't strong enough to stop it. She had given me her love and trust and I had failed to keep her protected, I had failed her.
A weatlth of emotions bombared my body, feelings that were foreign overwhelmed me, and in that instant I realized that the powers that be had granted me part of my wish, I was becoming human.
My first lesson; life isn't fair.
Snippet #2 -
"Don't try that on me, I know you. If its not that bastard Fred then it's something else." Then as if Anna had shouted the news to the world, realization dawned in Beth's eyes. "NO, it can't be," she said collapsing on the couch "you swore off men."
"What are you talking about now?" Anna asked as she stood up and headed to the kitchen so she wouldn't have to look Beth in the eyes.
"Your pregnate!"
Ok, I'm all done! Those are my snippets.
Love the twist
I love the twist at the end of your first snippet. It really plays with the tone and made me want more!
The second one is great, too. Those surprise reveals are always a good time for readers!
I laughed about not wanting to start a book because you'd be tempted to ignore your company. I sometimes read books that don't fully engage me when I know I'm going to be busy. I don't want to have something great calling me when I need to be doing the laundry or something else on the To Do list.
Thanks for sharing!
Ellen
P.S. Sometimes it takes a while to find the story you want to tell. Let your ideas keep percolating. You might be surprised which one grabs you and won't let go until you finish!

I wanna play
I missed the whole snippet thing last time, I think. Partly because I keep my writing on a different computer than the one I use for email and the like. But I think I have something to add from my Sept Super. The one with the cool new cover with my Lakoat hero and my heroine who looks Lakota.
“Hey, do I know--,” she started to ask. Her words gotstuck in her throat the instant his gaze met hers. Those
eyes. She would never in a million years forget those eyes.
Yep, chickadee, that’s him, the voice in her head chortled. Eli Robideaux. The source of all your moanin’ and
groanin’ and weepin’ and carryin’ on all these years.
“And, if I’m not mistaken, he’s here to rob you.”
I love introducing characters at their absolute lowest. There's so much to build on. :-)
Thanks for the fab new titles to add to my must-read list.

I've never heard of
I've never heard of snippets, but I love this post! Thanks, Ellen, for giving us a heads up! I get so bogged down in writing I forget to come out and play. Anyway, this is from a book that's out in September 2010. It's a Super but the first of a four book trilogy. The other three are MIRA's.
“I’ve got a guy who killed his wife.”“Potentially.” “Right.”Dead wife. I jotted.
“The weird part is, I’ve got a wife I need you to interview.”
Reading what I’d just written, I said, “I’m not real successful with dead people.” I’m also not callous, but Sheila seemed to bring out the cold in me.

Yay :)
This is great! The book I'm reading is upstairs and getting it would mean I'd have to, you know, actually stand up (I've been up all afternoon, running around -- this is my break, LOL), but I can give you a snip from the Blaze I'm writing, titled ANY MAN SHE WANTS that comes out May '10. Just a little background -- the heroine runs a Chicago bakery where she sells, among other things, pheromone-enhanced icing on cookies that makes women more sexually attractive to the men they want. ;) I also deleted a few lines that were a little more than PG-17. ;)
Dan, Dan, Dan, her mind yelled, as if trying to get her lust-saturated brain to recognize how wrong this was.
They were friends. They'd never looked at each other this way. She could tell by the way his hazel irises darkened, the pupils expanding, that he was responding to her, too.
The cookies. She’d eaten two of the cookies.
He looked at her deeply, his eyes hungry. Like he wanted to pounce on her and bite her. . .in the best possible way.
“Oh, no,” she whispered, backing up and finding only the wall behind her.
“What? What’s wrong?”
“It’s the cookies, Dan, I had some cookies. . .that’s all. If you’re feeling a little, uh, turned on, that’s why. It’s not me. It’s the cookies,” she babbled desperately as he stepped in closer.
He reached up, pulled the scarf from her head and let her hair fall loose.
“I think it’s you, Jodie."

Your heroine is named Jodie? I don't think I've ever read a romance that had a Jodie as the main character before. It's not exactly the most popular name! What made you use it? And I'm asking in all seriousness... I *never* know what my characters are named until I start typing. They tell me. Only once have I changed a name once I started, and the story just kept going wrong. I went back to my original name...and it all the kinks work out. Weird, huh?

OMG!
Oh, geez, Jodie -- what's weird is that I never made the connection until I just saw it, LOL. Aiy!
You must have been lurking in my unconscious somewhere... I usually just pop out a name when I start writing, too -- and pretty much stay with whatever I pick. Jodie just felt right (she's a complete horndog, too, btw, LOL). How funny!
Ellen, it is a fun book, with science geeks and geniuses abound... ;) Dan is a bonafide genius science guy, and I am having the best time writing him.
Now -- that I have caught up from the top...
Ellen, the drooping kilt! LOL I can never look out at my peonies (which really were drooping after all of that rain) w/out thinking of this now... Also LOVE "hard line festive garment." I love how you use the words there...
Susan, I'm intrigued. I think that's the first specimen cup I've seen in a book, LOL.
Jodie -- that snippet was intense.
Jeannie, that is such a tough-girl line -- I love it. How she's doing it today. Nice. :)
Chris, oh, a Sheriff and he's touching her neck. I'm done for.
Kathleen, wow, I felt so sorry for your heroine from just that little snippet.
Dorothy, a lot of strong emotions going on there (btw, my mother's name was Dorothy... love that name, and we don't hear it much anymore :)
LOL Deb -- you had me chuckling... could hear them...
Tara --sounds like it would be exactly what I love to read. :)
And on the snippetathon thread, we used that 2 paragraph rule pretty loosely, LOL -- you can include several lines of dialogue, IMO, that would normally take up the space of one fat para... so just sayin'... *G*
Too much fun!

In the snippet I submitted, the buddy, Oliver, thinks he got engaged because he asked a woman he plays an online game with to marry him. She said yes, but she thought they were "in character." Turning back to Lexi, her grey eyes were cold as she stared at her. Her long wrinkled face seemed to hide any hint of the softness Ryan spoke of. Looking back at Lexi she brushed a strand of grey hair out of her eyes. Grinding her cigarette out in a nearby ashtray she stared, and seemed to sum Lexi up with one long, cool glance.
“Listen here missy, I’m not one to be told what is and ain’t. Now I’m only going to tell you this once more. To you the position is filled. I don’t need anybody like you around here stirring up trouble and bothering Ryan. I mean just look at yourself! Maybe you should go find Carlie and see if you can get a job as one of his pole dancers. I’m sure he’d be glad to help you, dressed like you are.”
Another part of their fight... Had to post it! I just love Maude the more I writer her! She is growing on em so much I think I might have to get her man soon too! LOL!
“For your information I’m not interested in Ryan as anything more than a friend. Not that my life is any of your business, but hooking up with some guy is the least of my concerns.” A crowd started to gather around Lexi trying to see what the commotion was about as her voice got louder and louder. “Furthermore this isn’t even my outfit. My new roommates were kind enough to let me borrow some clothes tonight.”
“If you call that kind you got some learning to do.”
“Well maybe I do, but I guarantee it won’t be here around people like you.” Lexi turned to see several people watching her.
“Real spitfire, aren’t you!”
If you have never loved.. you have never really lived!

Donya,
I'm so glad you stopped by to share your work! What a character you've got there--tons of energy.
