Anyone want to have a friendly competition? I'm getting all my bookworm friends and family who aren't participating in the challenge online to give me a list of the books that they've read this year. My goal is to mail everyone's list in on or shortly after November 1st. As of this moment, I have 210 books from 5 people.
Who thinks that they can beat that?

How does this work?
Hi Penn,
How does this work? Do you need the titles of the books? Any other info? Where do you send it? Or are you going to blog them?
Thanks,
Ellen

Heavens, no, I'm not going to blog them. I'm mailing them in.
There's an address for people who can't or don't want to participate online, and I'm going to mail them in there.
At a minimum, we need title and author. It's nice also to have publisher or line and if you're really ambitious, you can put a brief review (like "5 stars! Excellent read!").
You can mail them in yourself (although the UKers and the Aussies and Kiwis might want to save the postage and email me). The US addy is:
100,000 Book Challenge / PO Box 9069 / Buffalo, NY 14269-9069
Our lovely neighbours to the north can snail mail their lists to:
100,000 Book Challenge / P.O. Box 637 / Fort Erie, Ontario / L2A 5X3
You can email me at rmg _ 303 @ yahoo . com (without the spaces) if you want to email me the list. :) That's my public email. I check it at least once a week.

PS -- remember that every book you read can be counted!
They don't have to be romances or Harlequins, so if you read something to research one of your books, that counts. (Kate Walker blogged a couple of her research books as "Kate's Research Book #1" and "Kate's Research Book #2" so that we wouldn't guess what one of her upcoming books is about, and that counted, too, LOL.)
Remember that audio books and eBooks count, too. And Manga . . .

Thanks!
I'll see if I can round up some books from my friends and relatives!
I've blogged a bunch of books I read to my kids. If only the Harry Potter books were shorter...one chapter a night doesn't get you very far!
I appreciate the info!

Penn, My daughters have
Penn,
My daughters have read many of the books that I have already blogged, plus they have read some that I haven't. If I print out my word doc and get them to check the ones they have read and a plus or minus sign, I could probably get lists together from them. Would this work?
Nancy
Sure, that would work.
And then would you mail it straight in and let us all know? Or snail mail or email me their lists and let them be combined with mine? Not that I care, just need to know if I need to keep an eye out for an email from you. :)

Ellen, I've added 20 books that I read with my kids
to my total count just so far this year. Of course, none of them were anywhere near as long as the Harry Potter books, but still, however many HPs you read together this year will be that many more books (even "just one" is more than zero). PLUS, it's kind of what you dream of happening with the families that the National Center for Family Literacy, once they've been helped. I mean, as a booklover, it's a nice dream of mine to have families curled up together reading. You'd think that the world was coming to an end on the nights when dh or I don't read to our kids, even when we say, "You can read in bed for x minues." I think it's a combo of my kids loving stories (but they can read on their own now, so it IS more than that) and hearing someone else tell the story and just getting to have some cuddle time . . .

Reading with the kids
Penn--that's such a great vision. You're right. Reading time is my favorite thing. I like to hope it makes up for any bumpy patches in the day, sending us all off to sleep in a better mood and reconnected.
I like the Harry Potter books but this is my second time through them out loud and I'm sort of...over it. I do a mean McGonagal imitation though. (My Snape leaves a bit to be desired.)
Thanks for the inspiration to look for some other sources of books,
Ellen

My daughters are 17, 21 and
My daughters are 17, 21 and 23--they still love to have me read to them. LOL, of course the oldest and youngest read a lot on their own (my middle child has Down syndrome and has low vision), but I make up different voices for the characters and they love listening.
Nancy
I like this idea
There is a lady that I work with that has been borrowing and reading books from me for the past several months (we joke that I am her dealer). I can think of several books that I know she has read, I'll ask her to get her own list together of what she has read that didn't come from me also.
I've tried to encourage her to blog but she isn't in to it, she just wants to read. Not that I have a problem with someone who just wants to read. LOL
Oh I am SOOO tempted to email you the list of my books
instead of blogging them myself
but I'm going to try and resist that temptation and do it myself
SOOOOOOO tempted!

Well, they can't be mailed after a certain date
(there is a deadline for the snail mail entries), so you'd still be blogging a bunch o' books. Next year, you can take my advice and only blog the best of the best of what you read . . .

What is the deadline?
ELLEN TOO
A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!
The deadline is November something . . .
which is why I want to mail everything by November 1st. (Note that that November deadline is for submissions done by mail, not the ones we do here online at eHQ). So, the deadline to get something to me is well, November 1st, since that's a Sunday.
I guess I'll aim for getting everything in the mail on November 2nd or 3rd . . .
As for Harlequin's exact deadline, I don't remember. Mid-November, I think. Jayne, you there? What was the mail-in deadline exactly???
