So Where do you Do it - Computing?

Okay, where is your computer?  Ours is in our home office, which is upstairs in a spare bedroom.  This is great for keeping the kids off the computer, but makes it hard to jump on for just 10 minutes when the kids are playing happily.  I have started bringing home my work computer and putting it in the family room, but we really don't have a good space for it.  So I am thinking about re-organizing that room to have a desk set up, the kids could use it for projects and if they want to play on the computer they could (Maggie loves playing on Noggin.com) and then I could jump on when I want.  Any thoughts, recommendations?

Oh, ours is in our "office"

which is the "4th bedroom" just off the family room and the kitchen. And it's still hard to just bop on for a few minutes. I was hoping that we'd get each other a laptop (not one each, one to share but to/from each other) and wireless for Xmas but now it's looking like Mother's Day-Father's Day-Anniversary-DH's Bday. We're a Macintosh family so there are no sales, just the ability to buy the "old" stock when they announce something new. I also talked to dh about buying our oldest one of the "One Laptop Per Child" laptops when it was "buy 2 -- one for you, one for a child elsewhere" before year-end and he nixed that but let me tell you, yesterday and Saturday they were playing so well in the back yard and I did not want to do yard work but I like to be out there with them and I would have used that laptop and surfed around here. (It has a screen that you can still see in bright sunlight.)

Penn, looking forward to her next 21st century toy :)

My computer is in the living

My computer is in the living room....right in front of the TV.  but since I live alone.....It's a great place for me!

I'm spoiled

Back in the day when my household had only one computer we converted our breakfast room to the computer room.  It's not big enough for a table that would seat the 4 of us, and still allow any space to walk around...so what better thing to do than use it as the computer place.

Now Mike still uses it for the desktop, but Richard has a laptop(no idea where he uses it, other than his room) Brian has a laptop(I've seen it on his bed) I have a laptop that I use either on the dining room table, on a card table in front of the living room tv, or hiding out in bed.  Mike has a laptop that he uses for work, and when he needs to uses it at the dining room table.  He also has a new laptop he wanted, but hasn't unpacked, and since it's a PC and I have a MAC I'm about to take it for all the things I want to do and can't with my MAC!

So yes, my family is fortunate to be so spoiled!

Penni - Since you left

I moved the computer out of the kitchen, it's now in a direct line from the front door in the living room

The living room boasts two other computers, one behind the bar and one in
the corner opposite the telly (one for P and one for B)

DH has his computer on the other side of the wall from me, in the "spare" room

The brother still has multiple computers in his room

Can you say computer generation?

Sometimes DH suggests I move the computer upstairs to the bedroom for peace and
quiet but I'm afraid of what Munchkin would get up to without supervision

The telly gets turned off a lot more often than the computers and we
keep trying to give computers away to neighbours but then they get
bitten by the bug and upgrade and back comes the computer

A neighbour just upgraded and gave us his old computer (that he didn't get from us in the first place)

When DH gets on to me about too many books, I just say the word "computers" Laughing

They're not the most up to date or the most powerful, but I can log onto eharl
and send emails and blog, and what more could I possibly want

Sandi & Sadhbh - you make

Sandi & Sadhbh - you make me jealous with your multi-computer families.  We have two (my work laptop) and the home regular one.  I guess I would be okay with just a set-up downstairs that I could put the laptop.  So do most of you have wireless or do you hook up to phone lines?  I would love wireless, but we get free dial-up through my work, so it is hard to convince cheap-skates like Mike & I to upgrade.  Penn, I was just talking to a Mac friend, she stated they went that way do to the kids schools all having macs, did you go because of that, or your hubby's work?

Mine is is my office/library

Which is handy when book questions come up as I can just swivel in my chair and grab the book.  But, like every avid reader I like to multi-task... read during the commercials if the show is good. So I'd love to be able to play on the computer while the TV is on.  My new TV has the ports to hook up the CPU, but then I can't watch TV. I don't really have room to move the computer in the living room, so I guess this is a good excuse to buy a laptop!  Man, can i justify spending on money, or what?

In my bedroom

My computer is on my desk which is in my bedroom. I like it here but the one thing that I do not like is my chair. I really need a more cushiony chair because this one has lost all its fluff. I even have a chair pad on it but it is no good. My butt can get really sore if I sit here too long but sometimes I get so caught up here that I suffer later.

my computer

Hello everyone

It is fun to read where everyone is doing their surfing.....

My computer is in our "office" which is really the dinning room..........from the day we moved in 12 years ago this has been the office.

It is the room you walk into from the front porch, has a pocket door into the living room (so I can see the tv from my desk) and has the open stair way in it.........we have a kitchen table and chairs and a nice big area for it.......so never felt the need for a dinning room.

I also have a big window to the side yard......where Layne's sandbox and swing set are.........and the desk is in front of the window to the front porch.........so I get sunlight and a view......right now the view is snowman land....still.

I also have my craft desk in here....and still have a twin bed set up from when Steve came home in the wheel chair........which the dog loves....she lays there looking out the window.....will take that down soon.....just was not sure where to store it....

We had gotten a new computer last March....is a hp....has Vista.....a 19 inch flat screen......I love it.  I had searched a long time for our desk also.....have had it for 5 years....got it at walmart....is a computer desk but also has 3 drawers in it (which a lot of computer desks do not)........it came with a hutch ...but we never put that on....it is in bubble wrap under our king size bed....

So that is my computer world.   Lisa

Our computer is not in the

Our computer is not in the TV room, but if I were to set up a spot in the Family room, it would allow me to watch - although not easily unless I moved furniture.  For me the big question is do I add another phone jack or go wireless.

Lisa - your area sounds real nice, love the window element.

Margie - Are you going for a desk chair or just a nice chair?

EJ - It is easy to convince ourselves to spend money isn't it.

On my lap...

On my lap, on the sofa. ;) Or, if I go out to a coffee shop, or something, I bring my Axim and my little portable keyboard, and work there. We have an office and two desks, and sometimes dh uses them, but all of our computers are portable. We haven't had a desktop in so long that when SIL came over to have her fixed, we didn't have a monitor to attach to it! LOL

my computer is in

I have my computer set off on one side of the living room. The other side has the couch, loveseat, tv. From my angle at the computer I just swivel the chair a quarter of the way and I can watch tv. If I was to ever have a place where the computer could go into an "office" I'd have to have a tv in there otherwise I would miss half my favourite shows because I'm too engrossed in the Net. Like say started at 9. At like 8:50 I'd be like I'm just gonna check one more thing, the next thing I know it's 9:15.Embarassed

Which ever room I'm in!

LOL, ever since I got my wireless laptop for Christmas, a year ago, it is in whichever room I'm in! Mostly in my bedroom while I study or whatever. But when I'm in the living room watching tv or something, I ususally take it with me. No, I'm not online that often... Tongue out

About the wireless ..............

Cady, if you are going to continue to use dial up I'd say connect directly to the phone jack, wireless may only slow your connection down ... I've heard some horror stories of losing connections at the wrong time using dial-up with a wireless router   .... in my experience wireless works best when you are networking a broadband/DSL/cable/highspeed (whatever it's called in your area) connection  ... and even then, depending on the location of the wireless base to your computer can have a bearing

for me .... I have a desktop computer downstairs where my books are ..... handy for for when I was cataloguing  (sp? I need spellchecker on that one)  .... and for the 2006 Challenge that is where I blogged all my reviews

Dec. 2006 I picked up a used laptop ... and using a wireless router downstairs (I have DSL/highspeed) I'm connected to the internet on my laptop ...... I love it ... I set up a t.v. tray table beside the lazyboy and that's where the laptop lives ... I can check online regularly and do .... often the laptop go right on my lap, the lazyboy reclines and I can get right comfy ... t.v. on so I don't miss all the shows, and I can keep up somewhat on the boards too  ...... I love it!  and I'd miss it horribly if dear laptop ever got sick and if it died, I'd be replacing as soon as I could

the most important thing about location is comfort .... then is it convenient to everything I need to do or see ... laptops give you that freedom

hope this helps!

See I have been wanting to

See I have been wanting to upgrade to something faster as the kids are wanting to go online and play games - Noggin, Disney, etc, so this helps push me towards it.  Hmm, maybe this spring.

Cady

I don't think you'll regret it .....................

if you have the budget for the highspeed connection, go for it ....... though be prepared for your kids to be on the computer more .... so you'll proabably be bringing your laptop home more and then you might want that wireless router (often comes as part of your highspeed modem from your internet provider)  ..... and then you'd be able to enjoy computing anywhere you'd like! ... I can even go outside in the backyard with mine

Evil, see this place is

Evil, see this place is evil, if it is not more books, it is wireless connections or new e-book readers.  Laughing  Katherine, thanks for the comments, I am definately considering it.

Hi Cady

I would really like to get a soft comfortable chair I could curl up in. Unfortuately, I don't think it would fit. For my desk, I want a soft chair not an office chair because I want it to look pretty. So maybe one of those soft dining room chairs or something similar that will fit at my desk.

Margie :)

my computer

Home/work office.  It's not very comfortable for play time.  My dh and I have 2 computers side by side.  We are thinking about maybe getting another modem when we get furniture for the reading room we hope to put in the loft.  I really would like to separate work from play space.

Margie - you should look

Margie - you should look around, it seems like they are starting to make some smaller chairs again (at one point, I swear every chair was a chair and a half.)

Merri - It is nice that you can both work together.  That is another problem with dial-up, the other day both Mike & I planned to work from home, the problem is only one of us can use the internet at a time.

dial up vs cable

Hello everyone

We used to have dial up, and I had a second line just for the computer......but for the last 3 years we have had fiber optic with high speed.........and for 2 of those years it was wasted on my old computer.....but Miranda loved it for her laptop that she had wireless off a rouder.

Now with our new computer I get use out of the high speed.   I got this computer after she moved out taking her wireless conection with her.....

I really don't know much about all of this.....just that when ever I turn my computer on it is hooked up to the internet.....

I need to get my desk chair out of the basement.....have been using Amber's and I don't care for it.....mine has a higher back.

I had better go and watch for the bus.

Lisa

Connections

We have had cable since Mike ended up being online for hours at a time and didn't have a cell phone.  I couldn't get through, and after thinking of getting a dedicated phone line, decided that cable was just as cheap as a second phone line, and access.

Then he had to be able to have remote access for work, and we went wireless.  When he finally convinced me I needed a laptop I was thrilled to be able to use it anywhere!   Now the only computer that is wired is the desktop...everyone else is wireless, and can go anywhere and everywhere!

Our main computer has

Our main computer has always been in the livingroom, and the older computer used to be in a spareroom upstairs, but since the boys all moved out, we gave one room to the parrots and the other was a puter/guestroom...but now with the mill situation being so bad here right now, we've had our oldest back living with us since July, and the puter got stuffed in a spare bedroom downstairs, and he got that room...and that puter is still not hooked up.

I know i won't be wanting to be downstairs by myself using it. So no rush on my account. lol

I've often thought about moving the main computer to it's own room...but i really don't think i could stand it anywhere but the living room now...

We have highspeed internet thru our telephone company...and put in an extra phone jack for it.

Well, they are finally

Well, they are finally coming to fix our carpet from last November and I have been slowly hinting to Mike that as we redo the room, I want to add a table in the back section for us to us our laptops and would like to go wireless.  I figure by the time I find the table I want, I should be able to convince him.

Cady

Hi Cady

Good luck on the project. It is only logical that you do it all now. Right? :)
