A Soldier’s Promise by Cheryl Wyatt (Love Inspired #430)

I wanted to like the book, as others raved about it. I was disappointed.

The story: Can be found in several other reviews.

I obviously expected too much from Cheryl Wyatt's first book. An easy mistake, as the reviews have been very good. Sadly, the book is not to my liking. I had to force myself to finish it. I couldn't relate to the characters and their actions. There were some touching moments, but they weren't enough to hold my attention. I felt the story was all over the place and the boy's voice was too grown-up. I'm sorry, but I didn't like the book. However, I will give the author another chance and read A Soldier's Family soon.

Series: first book in Wings of Refuge miniseries

Rating: Poor

Poor rating?

I disagree with the comment about Bradley's voice. I have an 8 and 6 year old, and they talk much like Bradley. A lot of how "old" a child talks depends upon how their teachers instruct and how the child is talked with in the home. Also, I related so much to Joel...actually fell a little in love with him. I loved this book, and the second. Can't wait for more in the series to come out!

I don't know any boy that

I don't know any boy that talks like Bradley. Maybe if I did I would have liked this book better. Liking a book I feel has a lot to do with personal experiences, believes, expectations...

That's why tastes are so different and why I find it so interesting to read reviews. I have a very close friend who loves romance novels as much as I do. We have the same favourite (historical romance) authors, but not the same favourite books. :-)

Wyatt's first book obviously works for lots of readers and I'm very happy for her. I'm sad that I didn't like it better, but for me it just didn't work. Right now I'm reading her second release. I'm on page 47 and so far I'd rate it "very good".
