The Soldier and the Rose by Linda Barrett... QC #143

The Soldier and the Rose by Linda Barrett, Everlasting Love, #19, November 2007

book coverSix months after Rose Kaufman married Joe he went off to war, he died in the war, never seeing his daughter. It was Charlie Shapiro that came back from the war. Since Rose lived in the same neighbourhood Charlie would visit her and tell her about Joe, about the war, eventually falling in love with her. Even though he knows that Rose still hold Joe in her heart he still proposes to her, promising to take care of her and her daughter. She knows she isn't being fair to Charlie but accepts his marriage proposal. Would loving Charlie mean having to let go of Joe? Would Charlie be second best, forever?

This book chronicles their 60 years of marriage. We saw them go through happy times and sad times, laughed with them and cried with them. Watched them built a life together. Raise three wonderful children. And now all the memories are brought back for Rose because her granddaughter is pregnant and her husband is off to Iraq. This book was so moving, so emotional. Now to read a lighter book because I find it too emotionally draining to read two ELs together, one after the other.

This book was so moving, so

This book was so moving, so emotional. Now to read a lighter book because I find it too emotionally draining to read two ELs together, one after the other.

I saw this one in the eHQ newsletter and read the description a while back.  Caught my curiousity.  But I don't think I can read ELs for the reason you said above...  so draining!  I feel like crying just reading the book's description.  I'm not a person who likes to be brought to tears.  No cry is a good cry!  :(

It's funny what you said about needing a light read after ELs....  I needed a "Harlequin Presents" fix after reading too many "Blaze" books.  (Blaze desensitized me to sex, wasn't giving enough emotional/specialness to the hero/heroine's relationship)

completely agree...

I remember when I read The Marriage Bed.  It was the same.  You can't read another one.  You definitely need something lighter.  It was a fantastic book.  One of my favorites for 2007 but just so full of emotions.

The Marriage Bed

I found THe Marriage Bed by Judith Arnold and If I'd Never Known Your Love by Georgia Bockoven both very emotional. I really like the stories but I do have to read them with a lot of time between.
