I’ve read Donna Alward’s other two books, Hired by the Cowboy and Marriage at Circle M, and seen her grown in strength as a writer with each one. But I really felt that with The Soldier’s Homecoming she had written the sort of book that shows she has really found her voice as a writer. And it’s a voice that I love.
This is a book of real heart and a book that shows the true strength of love. It deals with the emotional subject of a post traumatic stress, and it doesn’t minimise it. But it also shows how real love, strong and generous on both sides, can win through the darkness and bring true happiness to all concerned.
On one level it’s that tried and tested theme of a ‘secret baby’ book, with Jonas coming home to find that he is the father of a daughter he knew nothing about. But it’s so much more than that. It’s a book about loving and learning, and growing, until at the end you can have no doubt that Shannyn and Jonas and their daughter are destined for the truly happy ever after that they all deserve so much.

Solider's Homecoming
Kate, I enjoyed this book of Donna's and thought the same thing. Love Donna's sweet, gentle voice too.

I usually don't
I usually don't care for the secret baby line but this author really made it work. I was upset in the beginning that Shannyn would could their daughter a secret from him but it was explained to my satisfaction and it worked great for the story. This was a very good book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

RE: THE SOLDIER'S HOMECOMING by Donna Alward
I admit that I am a "softie" when it comes to stories with babies and military personnel in them. Though I'm not really one that's wild about the "secret baby" theme (Mum needs to be upfront with Daddy, if at all possible, about the lil' Tyke). I do appreciate Donna tackling the issue of PTSS in "The Soldier's Homecoming." Unfortunately, due to some of what I saw and experienced in the 1st Iraq War, I suffer from PTSS (I receive therapy for it) -- and during a three-month stint at Walter Reed I did PT and Speech Pathology to learn to walk and speak again. My hat is off to Donna, for not only does she write tremendously, but she's not "too high-and-mighty" to email and to chat with her fans (like me!).

Hi everyone
So sorry not to have replied to you before now but I've been fighting a dreadline and then I had to go to London for the launch party for my 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance (2nd edition) so I'm only just back and catching up.
Hi Jennie - I'm glad you enjoyed this book too. Donna has a lovely - yes - soft but also avery warm voice that shows at its best in a story with such heart like this one.
Hi debkc3 - I often have trouble with 'secret baby' stories too - the author has to find such strong reasons why the mother doesn't tell the father in order to be able to convince me. But I was able to put those thoughts aside because, as I said, this is so much more than a secret baby story.
Hi Jock - from the above you'll know that I agree with you - unless there are really strong reasons not to, the yes the mother needs to be upfront with the father from the start if at all possible.
I'm sorry to hear of your own experiences with PTSS - I hope that things continue to improve for you each day. And what a compliment to Donna that her book convinced and appealed to someone with such painful experience of just what she was writing about. I know Donna as a personal friend and there is nothing 'high and mighty' about her at all. She's one of my favourite people - and repidly turning into one of my favourite writers.
