Spell of the Highlander (2005) by Karen Marie Moning (Delacorte)

We start with the queen of the Fae causing a temporary blackout of all mortal magic in Britian, part of Scotland, and most of Wales. This event lets elements occur that will let certain other things take place to weave the results she is seeking. Sometime after that event a professors assistant at a school in Chicago takes posession of a package for her employer. It turns out to be an old mirror and Jessi St. James leaves it locked up in the professors office. As she is leaving she thinks she catches a glimpse of something in it but decides she is just tired. Jessi can't get the old mirror out of her mind and goes to make sure it is ok a few days later. She walks into the professors office only to find a would be thief there threatening her with bodily harm. As she is deciding what to do another male voice behind her offers his protection if she would only repeat a few word that he tells her. Jessi decides to take her chances as the thief in front of her is a definite danger and she could use all the help she can get. Cian MacKeltar is indeed a protector as well as an ancient Druid. The next time Jessi goes into the professors office Cian is in the mirror again. He and Jessi come to an agreement, he will protect her from the next assassin sent to kill her and explain what is going on. Jessi will release Cian and grant him his temporary freedom. And then the real adventures begin.

And how in the heck do you summarize a book that has so much going on in it. I have to say I seriously liked this book. In fact I went and put all of the highlander series on my TBB list and this one will be a keeper for me. I can't imagine any of them being better than this but there is always that chance.   Kiss
