spinning dog hair

gu scarf triptych.jpg

Okay, so one of my hobbies is spinning dog hair (usually German shedder hair, always in supply at mi casa) into yarn.  I used to use a hand spindle and got rather good with that, but now I have a wheel, and it is SOOO hard to get the hang of.

What does someone do with dog hair yarn?  Make tribal bellydance hip skirts.  My troupe leader said the other day, "Not to put any pressure on you . . . ."  but if I could create five more of these (I already gave her one, which she loves, as I adore her).  So I'm trying to do this with the wheel again. . . .  Wish me luck.  Experienced hands have told me in plain English that I should get some wool and start there.  I have so far ignored this advice, but my friend Arlene is actually going to bring me a big bag from her sheep.

Are the scarves dog hair?

Jeannie Watt  another Super author braids horse hair. I could supply you with lots of cat hair but no way am I going to try spinning it into yarn. What a talented bunch of ladies around here.

yes!

Yes, the scarf Gudrun is wearing in the picture is made of yarn spun from her friend Sally's hair.  It's trimmed with Eldar and Gu's GSD-hair yarn.  The spinning went a bit better yesterday.

It is so wonderful

It is so wonderful that old crafts like spinning yarn are being kept alive. Can your dogs tell that the yarn comes from their buddies?  This is so fascinating. When Jeannie Watt emailed me about horse hair braiding she also mentioned that she did horse hair hitching. Another fascinating craft. I think I'm too old to start with any thing new but boy do I admire your craft. Once you have mastered spinning dog hair just  think you can start with wool and it will be a snap and then there is llama wool and vicuna etc.

You have a new picture

Who is kissing you?

Eldar kisses

Eldar, my hearing dog, is kissing me.  I have a sensoroneural (sp?) hearing loss in one ear, and Eldar helps keep me safe from traffic, know when things are boiling on the stove, and find the phone, among other things.  Fortunately, my other ear is perfect.  My second dog, Gudrun, is a pet.  Yes, having a second dog distracts Eldar from his work.

The spinning is going better!  It's a relief; I was becoming very discouraged.  I think the dogs know the fibre is from them, but once it's yarn I'm not sure.  I think they may know.

Hi, Margot I have read

Hi, Margot

I have read your post sometime ago, got a little sidetracked & lost your blog.  Now I found it againSmile.

My very first fur-friend, Lora, was a German Shephard, they are such loyal & intelligent dogs.  I love those pictures of your dogs.  Are they all working dogs?  I don't seem to find that hearing dogs are as common as seeing dogs.  I am born with hearing problem, but wasn't discovered until I was about 18 (long story), hearing aid doesn't help, fortunately I can hear mid-range freqencies, for now, not counting agingTongue out

How's your spinning/yarning going?  Are those scarves for dogs only?  I guess dogs can sense those were from animal.  My dog rubs himself on the the fur trim coat (rabbit fur), very sillyWink, I found that entertaining.
