The Stand by Stephen King

One of my all-time favorite books, The Stand is an end-of-the-world saga as only Stephen King can tell it.  When the US government's secret bioterror lab suffers a catastrophic failure, a super-flu virus is released which wipes out something like 95% of the world's population.  Those left alive must not only find a way to survive and regroup, they also fight a battle between God and the devil for their souls.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." ~ Theodore Roosevelt

Oh what a classic!

This is one of those MUST READ books!  Now I want to reread it...

I didn't read this, although

I didn't read this, although I do like Stephen King. I saw the movie though, was it anything like the book?

I've read this one and

I've read this one and loved it too. I agree it's a must read. The Dark Half is great too. and Misery and my all time favorite because it was my first - It. It was much better than the movie version.

Lorie - IMHO his books are always much better than the movie.

I read this many years ago....

It is probably one of his best books...and probably one of the best film adaptations of one of his books ever done.

Mostly I think the movie was so good, because it was a TV mini series and the story wasnt rushed or cut too much.

Most of the movies made from his books barely resemble the story he wrote.

I read this book back...

...when I was a wee little thing... um, not really; probably in 1979 or thereabouts at which point I was 20 (or thereabouts).  It really made an impact on me and it's one of those stories that never really leaves my mind.
The next book of his that I read was The Shining... that one gave me the willies... a lot more so than The Stand did.
I've only read a few of his books and they're books that I consider keepers:  The Green Mile (which was probably the best book-to-movie ever done, IMHO.), Bag of Bones, From a Buick 8 and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.  I've also got his short story collection Everything's Eventual... and to be honest they're about the only books that of King's that I can handle.
And I have never, and will never, been able to watch anything of his on television or in a theatre.  Seeing anything like that makes it much, much too immediate for me to handle... reading I can do a bit of; but watch it?  Never!

I've read the book and watched the mini-series ......

I think SK had control over how the book was portrayed in the mini-series ..... I remember being glued to the t.v. when it was on

Kathy, I know what you mean about watching SK movies ....his writing is so intense ... and when he gets involved in the movie making, his real talent for horror shines through ...  the Stand was a little different and one I'd suggest you watch .... just because of the sheer length of it, the pace of the horrific parts  .... I think you'd do alright with it

i think, as he got more control...

as he got more control, the movies got better.

The Shining was great, but they changed the ending...Why?

Lawn Mower Man had nothing to do with the story he wrote, but it was billed as "Stephen Kings Lawnmower Man"

I think Pet Sematary was the first one that pretty much followed the book.

Tommyknockers (also mini series), The Stand, and Mysery were great. I didnt read the GreenMile, but Iliked the movie.

while I was reading The Stand....

I had really wierd dreams...

I have read lots of "horror" stories and seen lots of scary movies....but this one affected my subconcious.

Maybe because most Horror stories are so far out of the relm of reality, that it cant possibly happen.

The Stand could and in some ways has happened.  The story came out just as AIDS was coming into the fore front.....many people believe AIDS was a science experience that went out of control.
