Standing the test of time...

speed.jpg

Carrying on with Laura's movie theme, I saw the movie SPEED last night on TV. Don't know about you, but there's something about a buff Keanu Reeves with short cropped hair and a mission, that keeps me riveted to the screen.

The movie itself has it all. The ticking clock, the disposable best friend, (sorry Harry!) the maniacal mind (love Dennis Hopper as the bad guy--he does it soooo well,) the innocents in peril, the gutsy heroine (love Sandra Bullock in, well, just about everything,) and the promise of a happy ever after (let's ignore Speed II, please.)

For me, SPEED is a movie that stands the test of time, along with films like PRETTY WOMAN and TOP GUN and OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. They deliver on all my expectations and hopes for great entertainment and a satisfying ending.

So I'm curious. Which movies stand the test of time for you? I'll enter all comments into a draw for a little kiwi keyring and a copy of one of my books of your choice (personal stock allowing Wink.)

Movie of all Time

Well lets see here I can think of several. Lets say Grease and Dirty Dancing. Love them both!

Also Man on Fire! I love anything Denzel Washington. This movie I can watch over and over and never get tired of watching.

I don't watch many movies

but Dirty Dancing is a favorite as per Jessicue.  Also showing my age but loved African Queen with Katherine Hepburn and Humprey Bogart. Also To Sir With Love is a favorite. My niece got me to watch Love Actually and I know I could watch it again.

Movies that stands the test fo time...

When Harry Met Sally, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

I don't know To Sir With Love but I'll have to check it out ;-)

Movies

Based on what's on my shelf, the movies that stand the test of time for me are Pretty Woman and Grease.

I find that I can't watch movies on TV just because the ad breaks drive me mad - or if I like the movie enough to watch it I usually forget about it until its half finished anyway.

Love Affair or An Affair to Remember ......

This movie is so much of a keeper they remade it three times .... the version you all will remember the best I think is An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr ... you know, he's the playboy she's the singer .. they meet on a cruise, but are already engaged to others ... they vow that if their love is true they'll met up at the Empire State Building  and of course, something happens and one doesn't show up ...sigh

the first one was Love Affair made in 1939 starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer  ... then came in 1957 came the remake under the title An Affair to Remember  .... and it was again remade with it's original title, Love Affair in 1994 starring Warren Beatty and Annette Benning

I love African Queen and The Searchers with

John Wayne.  The newest movie that I really enjoy is Second Hand Lions with Michael Caine and Robert Duvall.  I enjoy Speed also as it has a good story and not just blowing things up and shooting people.  I have not seen Speed II but I heard it was not good.

Elaine

movies

Well, Apollo 13 and (as it's Halloween) Death Becomes Her come to mind.

Movies

I have some all time favorites that I can watch again and again. While Your Were Sleeping, The Wedding Planner, the Diehards, the Lethal Weapons, the Indiana Jones series, the Star Wars series, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, The Burbs, and countless others I like. As you can tell, I have varied tastes in movies.

Linda Henderson

movies

My choices would be Dirty Dancing, While You Were Sleeping, Legends of the Fall, Pretty Woman, You've Got Mail. Top Gun and Cocktail.

Movies:

I love: Ghost & The Lake House, sad yet the love between the main characters of both movies was very strong.

There are too many movies

to name, but I'll try.

They are mainly movies in the 40s-60s, but they do go into the 70's-2000s:  John Wayne movies, Davy Crockett and Swampfox and Old Yeller and Savage Sam movies from Disney, Doris Day and Kathryn Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant movies, African Queen, Gone With The Wind, Grease, Top Gun, An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman, Lethal Weapons and Crockadile Dundee series's, and too many others to mention.  Thank goodness for DVDs.

Great topic!

I, too, loooooooove Sandra Bullock movies!  Top faves:  Speed, Miss Congeniality, While You were Sleeping!  I can watch them repeatedly.  My all-time favorite is The Sound Of Music.  I love a lot of the older musicals.  Great topic Yvonne!:)

Hi Yvonne

All you mentioned are movies I can watch over and over again. For me, that's what stands the test of time... I never tire of watching them.

To add to the list, Dirty Dancing, Two Weeks Notice, A Walk in the Clouds, It Happened One Night (oldie but goodie).  These are movies I can't pass up. I love to RELlVE the moments in certain scenes over and over again.  I'm sure there are more on my list, but these came to mind easily.

OMG, yes! Grease and Dirty Dancing. Both great movies that transcend generations. And I totally agree with you on the brilliance that is Denzel Washington. Love him in Deja Vu too, and the Bone Collector.

Kaelee

You know, I'd love to have an evening, or a weekend, where I could just sit and watch some of the golden oldies. My dh loves action, the faster the better, so when there's a pause in conversation or a meaningful silence, he starts to fidget, or talk to fill the gap. I blame our instant gratification society, myself, where things happen so quickly now and we too rarely take the time to savour things slowly, as they deserve to be savoured.

Oh, and Love Actually is a gorgeous movie. Just one of those guaranteed feel good warm and fuzzy films that hits all the right notes. And the cast! Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant... sigh...

FF

Okay so that's two votes to 'To Sir with Love.' I know I've seen it but for some reason only the sound track is resonating now in my mind. Thanks guys! <g>

Emmanuelle

Hmm, I know I've never seen Four Weddings and a Funeral. Clearly a film that needs to be added to my 'must watch list' the next time hubby is on a night shift.

I also haven't seen all of When Harry Met Sally. I think the only scene I have seen is the one in the restaurant where she fakes it. Makes me blush so much I don't know if I could even watch the rest! LOL!

Lyn NZ

I know! The ads are crazy. I noticed the other night that they started to show Speed with no ad breaks for nearly the first half hour! Then, of course, the gap between film and ads closed faster and faster toward the end.

So often we already have a DVD of a movie that's being shown on TV and we'll take it off the shelf and watch it rather than put up with the ads. Of course that only works when we have it.

Some movies I seriously

Some movies I seriously cannot get enough of, Smoke Signals (I am a huge fan of Sherman Alexis writings and Chris Eyre films) Braveheart, Dirty Dancing, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, A Walk in the clouds, The Princess Bride, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, History of Violence.

I tend to get on "movie kicks" were I will watch one move over and over to the point were everyone around me is sick. I can quote blocks of dialogue from my favorite movies.

KatherineT

Oooh, thanks for those recommendations. Again, I know I've seen snippets of the movies but not the whole thing. Not sure if my waterworks will stand the test of time like the old movies do, though! I'm a notorious movie weeper. (Cue the scene in Sweet Home Alabama where he's booked out the jewellers late at night to ask her to marry him. Always makes me cry. Cue the scene in Ghost where...no, wait, just cue the whole movie.)

TXREADER2

Oh, yes! I'd forgotten all about Second Hand Lions. It's gorgeous! Loved loved loved that movie, although, again with the waterworks, y'know. Sheesh, maybe I need shares in a tissue company.

Minna

Oh definitely. Both great films that stand the test of time. I adore Goldie Hawn, she always has the capacity to make me laugh and Apollo 13 was an awesome film.

Linda Henderson

I'm sitting here nodding at all your movie choices, going uh-huh, yep, oh yeah. Isn't it interesting that so many of the same films keep coming back as favourites for so many, and not all of them were major blockbusters. For some reason they continue to feed the entertainment soul. Keep it coming, I say.

CrystalGB816

Aha, another one for While You Were Sleeping. You know, I like that movie, partly because I really love watching Sandra Bullock in films, but it didn't really deliver enough for me. Not really sure why.

Orchid

Ghost is probably my ALL TIME total favourite movie. Great when you want to release any emotional tension that's for sure. And yeah, I enjoyed the Lake House--again Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, which in my opinion is an awesome pairing. They just 'click' in film.

Cathy P

Wow, you have very broad tastes too. Love your list of movies. I can see a few in there I think I'd like to see. I'm not really into John Wayne, but my father in law's wife is a total John Wayne fan. It makes Christmas buying fun, trying to find movies she doesn't already have on DVD.

Hi Leanne!

Aha, another Sandra Bullock fan. I hope she appreciates how much we appreciate her <g.>

Love your movie list! Wow, I can remember seeing The Sound of Music when I was very young, and once going to a department store in the city (I had a new blue hair band that dug into my scalp) to hear a famous-in-NZ performer and a choir of children perform the songs. Gee, memories...

Charlene!

Oh my gosh, yes! Two Weeks Notice. I doubt I'll ever get sick of that film. Gee, you know, I just want to forget writing for today and curl up on the couch with a list of my favourite chick flics for the rest of the afternoon, and evening!

HSheryl

My kids are a crack up about movie lines so I totally get where you're coming from on quoting chunks of dialogue. They have entire conversations made up of movie dialogue.

I see you have A Walk to Remember in your list. We have that here at home but I haven't watched it yet. I keep getting that, and a A Walk in the Clouds, muddled up when I'm looking at film titles. I know I've seen (and LOVED)  A Walk in the Clouds.

some great

movies there. Constantly going "yeah" could definitely watch Lakehouse, Notebook, Pretty Woman again

and becase it's Halloween and even though it doesn't have the HEA The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Christa!

Oh yes! The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a definite favourite in our household. Went to a live show of it once, and it was AWESOME! A past prime minister of NZ, known for his very dry wit, was 'the narrator,' and boy oh boy did he work that role. Huge fun!

I keep forgetting its Halloween this weekend. We will be at a graduation dinner so will miss the trick or treaters. Not that it's such a big thing here in NZ but some years we get heaps of kids and others, well, no-one.

Fav movies

I saw that Speed was on TV and meant to watch it - then forgot. But the ads do annoy me so figure I'll add it to my list and get it out on DVD (once we've finished watching Veronica Mars).

Love While You Were Sleeping. and Pride and Prejudice (the BBC version). Saw a really sweet, and a little bit sad, and a lot unusual one earlier this year (I think) called Lars and The Real Girl. Too early to say if it will stand the test of time, but it was definitely well worth watching.

kEANU - sigh!

I first saw Keanu in POINT BREAK. I watched that movie a dozen times and sighed and sighed. He really does have a great face! :) Movies I'll always watch are The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. Oh, I love those!

Not a movie lover....

I rarely watch movies.  I tape various talk shows (Oprah, Ellen, etc.) and watch them late at night, as I'm out five nights a week playing sports and crash in front of the tv (sometimes) afterward.  I am currently watching June/09 shows (yes, I'm that far behind), so to add a movie to my list would put me over the edge!

The absolute ONLY movie I have recorded was The Lake House with Keanu & Sandra, as noted above.  I was totally absorbed in their love story and could watch that movie over and over again (and have).  It seems like I notice something "new" every time I watch it (but, then again, I'm Fifty and Forgetful, so I've probably just forgotten those things, ha ha).

I'm glad to see other people consider The Lake House one of their faves too.  They obviously have great taste (ha ha)!

Love it!

I just love, love, love that movie!

What fantastic chemistry. And I'm with you. No Speed II, please.

Other movies I love: Ever After, Pirates of Carribbean (only the first one too for me), The Mummy (again, no sequels), While You were Sleeping, You've Got Mail, and The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Oh, and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Sandra

Hi my fellow Kiwi! Love your new cover! Woohoo! No wonder you're excited.

Also love Pride and Prejudice, My brother gave the series to me one year and I used it to get the ironing up to date (yes, I tend to accumulate A LOT of ironing.)

Will have to watch out for Lars, no doubt it'll rescreen on TV again with the way they recycle everything here. Who was in it, Sandra?

Red

Oh yes, totally with you in agreement on Point Break. Great movie for Patrick Swayze too. I've often felt they could have easily reversed roles in that film, with Swayze being the single minded cop and Reeves the mastermind bank robbing surfer. Wonder how that would have panned out.

BTW, welcome to Desire, Red!

Lars and the Real Girl

The only actor I know was Ryan Gosling. It was just one of those quiet but deeply touching movies.

I was also intrigued by the coldness of setting, somewhere up near Canada in winter, people had to put on gloves just to step outside the house. So different to sub-tropical Auckland.

Laney

Fifty and forgetful <chuckle> sounds like it could be the title to a movie in itself.

And re your talk shows, I'm not a big fan of them because so much seems staged (from my pragmatic point of view) but every now and then there are absolute gems that offer a lot on an emotional or awareness/educational level. Good for you for finding what works to help you wind down after all that sport. A friend dropped an exercycle around to me yesterday because he doesn't use it and I need to strengthen my quads because of a bad knee. I'm eyeing it warily and wondering how long before I beg him to take it back. Exercise is not my friend. Laughing

I enjoyed Lake House for many of the same reasons as you. I have always enjoyed romances that are set around twists of time and have always loved time travel romances as well. I thought Linda Howard's Son of the Morning was a particularly well executed time travel romance. It really stays in my mind long after I've read it. Actually, thinking about it, it's probably time for a re-read.

Emily

Brilliant movies, you've suggested, all of them. Especially Ever After (love that scene where she takes the prince on her back to save him from the gypsies) and the first Pirates (nothing will diminish my sheer joy during my first ever viewing of Cap'n Jack Sparrow approaching the docks.) Yes, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Great film.

Gosh, I'm enjoying all these movie titles and new suggestions. The ones I've seen bring back so many great memories and the ones I haven't are going onto a must-watch-one-of-these-days list.

No one puts Baby in a corner!

I love Dirty Dancing... Patrick Swayze, God bless his soul, in those tight black pants... those legs, that as... errrr... astounding dance moves... oh my. I watched it several times since he died, just to remember his good times.

I also love an Affair to Remember... the original one. Makes me cry every time.

Emily and Yvonne

I LOVE Ever After, Pirates (although I love all 3), The Mummy (original for repeated watching) and The Truth About Cats and Dogs, too!  I also can watch Grease, Dirty Dancing, Bride and Prejudice, Bend it Like Beckham, The Wedding Date, The Wedding Singer, Madea Goes to Jail, Van Helsing, Talladega Nights and Last Holiday over and over and over and.....  I also ADORE Twilight.  I know, even I think the book is better, but there's something about the movie that just makes me NEED to watch it.  And I am in love with lots of the music in it, too.

Now, as much as I love An Affair to Remember, Meet Me in St. Louis and The Wizard of Oz, those are movies I have to watch occasionally.  Not because they're not good ('cause I think they're all awesome!), but there's something in each movie, even if it's only 'temorary' that breaks my heart.

I have never seen Speed, An Officer and A Gentleman or The Lake House.  Of course, I am the gal who's never seen all of Gone with the Wind, either....

Everyone is reminding me of

Everyone is reminding me of movies I forgot to list (point break, ever after, sweet home alabama)!

Yvonne I will warn you about A Walk to Remember buy a box of tissues before you plan to watch the movie. You will cry. I don't cry during movies and I cried during this movie (especially the end). But it is worth every tear.

Oh I agree with yours for

Oh I agree with yours for sure! One of my favorites, which I like to think has stood the test of time is Princess Bride. I absolutely love that adorable love story and the amazing characters. For me, another movie would be Roman Holiday-a movie which led me to a month of daydreams wishing that was my life. And then Thelma and Louise, and not just because you see some gorgeous Brad Pitt (not that it hurts Laughing).

When I have a little money I buy books. If any is left I buy food and clothes. -Erasmus

So many movies!

Speaking of Sandra Bullock, I loved all those movies listed already, but also Hope Floats with Harry Connick Jr. It didn't get much publicity, but I've watched it a few times and love it. Very sweet and feel good.

The other movies that stand the test of time for me have all been mentioned above except Sabrina -- both the Harrison Ford / Julia Ormond and the Humphrey Bogart / Audrey Hepburn versions.

I'm so with you on the beauty that was Patrick Swayze in dance. I keep wanting to watch Dirty Dancing but my kids won't let me. They know I'll get maudlin over his passing.

BTW, that is one gorgeous little boy you have. He looks so happy and bubbly. You must be so very proud.

April

That's a mighty list you have going there. But seriously, you need to watch a couple of the movies on your not-yet-seen list too. You owe it to yourself, believe me <g>
