STILL LEARNING

I have to admit, I loved school...well, except for math. I really could’ve done without that subject. English, science, history (I loved history), were not just more textbooks to memorize, but rather to enjoy and to explore. At the beginning of each class, I expected to be swept away into that topic for a certain period of time. I expected to open my mind and fill it with amazing facts. Okay, so I’m weird. That’s okay, I’m happy in my worldJ

I have to say, as an adult and an avid reader, I still feel the same excitement and giddiness when I open a new book. Each time those pages spread I can learn about characters, their lives, their emotions. I can travel to someplace tropical, a small town, another country – wherever. Books are amazing and each one is a learning tool. I’ll explainSmile

When I started writing, my accountant said, “Save all your receipts for books. They are considered research and are tax deductible.” We are a match made in CPA/client heavenKiss

After our initial appointment, I started thinking. When I read some of my favorite romances, I am, in a way, still learning. No matter how much I write, I still continue to discover and grow as an author. So, I suppose I can consider some of my favorite authors my teachers as well.

And since I have some amazing “teachers”, I’m not sure I can fail at this subject. With each page I write and each chapter I read, I am stronger and so are the people who live in my headCool

So, do you all get excited when you first open a book? Do you have certain expectations you want out of them or are you just in it for the carefree, relaxing time?

I’d love to hear what you look for in a book and an author. I’m researchingWink.

Happy Reading!

Reading for pleasure

I try not to have any expectations when I start a book. Even if the book is by an author that I particularly like it still doesn't guarantee that I will automatically like it. So I try to approach each and every book with a clean slate. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I usually read strictly for pleasure, for relaxation. That's not to say I haven't learned anything from them, that is a by product of my reading habit.

Expectations

My expectations are different for different genres of books.  Basically, I read romance with a little biography (or autobiography), maybe a bit of history, and a smidgeon of true crime thrown in.  In a biography or autobiography, I am looking for an insight into the person, not just facts about the person's life but a kind of psychological insight into what makes that person tick and what makes him or her uniquely s/he is (or was).  For example, after having seen the movie "Julie and Julia", I realized that Julia Child had facets of her person and personality about which I'd never heard so much as a suggestion, e.g. that she was a rather passionate woman with a bawdy sense of humor.  I knew she was rather tall, but I had no idea she was 6'2" tall.  So, I immediately rushed out to buy My Life in France to learn more about this very interesting woman (whom Meryl Streep played ingeniously, BTW.)  Same with history, only I'm interested in learning more about a place or event.  Only when I'm reading history, the style of writing about it is crucial to what I take away from it.  I despise the cut and dried style of my high school history books where facts, names, and dates are just basically listed.  I far prefer a style that paints a picture of the people involved.  With true crime, I'm looking for the psychology behind the crime as well as the forensic details.  I guess I want to understand it and play detective, too.

With romance, though, I'm expecting to find a hero that I will absolutely fall in love with, sometimes against the odds.  Typically, powerful and arrogant men don't appeal to me, so in stories that contain them, I expect the author to really show me their tender and vulnerable side, which, of course, should always involve a worthy heroine.  I expect to see them hopelessly and helplessly fall in love with the heroine.  Since I'm a hopeless romantic, a book that does this well means absolute enjoyment for me.  So, I suppose I expect that, too.

In all reading, I look for the poetry behind the words.  Some ways of phrasing a passage are just more compelling, emotionally evocative, and purely beautiful than others.  For example, in the typical wedding ceremony, I far prefer the phrase, "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder," over the more direct "No one should divide what God has joined."  It just lacks the poetry.

I haven't read anything

other than romance in AGES!  I love getting the HEA, and want it to be realistic.  What I mean by realistic, is that I want the obstacles to be fully overcome, not just pushed aside for the couple to get to their ending destination.  Is this always the reality in our world?  No, but that's how I want it in my books.

Never expect my thoughts to be overly clear just after I wake up.... especially when I'm dreading the night ahead....  Work.

Learning Curves

Even we,  the non-author readers,  are given the opportunity to learn from you, the authors in many

ways.  One of those methods, IMHO, is through the actual reading of your books as you have

mentioned.  Can't say that I'm ready to start writing a romance novel,  just  that I have a tiny bit of an

insight into the writing world after more than fifty years of reading romances!

I am always looking for a good read

when I open a book.  I want the characters to be someone I can like.  I will not really enjoy a book that has unllikable characters.

I was a student who enjoyed going to classes.  I said if I ever won the lottery I would like to just audit classes as I enjoyed them.  I did not want to take the tests just enjoy the learning,

Elaine

Hey Jules!

You are not weird... I loved school too... history, english, spanish, french, even math. I honestly believe reading romance novels helps me learn new things... and I even say it makes me feel more romantic.

Ok, I tend to read a little bit of everything, but to me the attraction about Harlequin romance (I'm a Desire / Presents kind of gal -- though I intend to diversify!) is that I can read the whole story in a short period of time. I am impatient when it comes to books, so reading volumes and volumes of pages will take me weeks and I prefer having the resolution right away. And I love HEAs too.

I love the sensation of a new book. Getting to know the characters, their backgrounds and how they meet (always my fav moment in the book). Then the conflicts, the things that I know, but are unsaid. Sometimes I am frustrated with them and wished I could smack them around a bit... sometimes I shed a few tears with them. And lets not forget the Happy Ending. It all has to be the proper mixture of fantasy and realism, I guess that's what I love the most.

I really do not look for something 'specific' in a book. I do like Italian heros, but it is not a must. I also tend to be addicted to mini series... but that's because I just gotta have them all! There are also authors that never disappoint... sadly, for my wallet that is, I am getting to know these new authors HERE and they are ALL good, so now I spend time looking at the author's name as well and not only the titles.

(rolls eyes) I just love reading romance, if it's out there, I will read it...

Opening a new book...

Hey Jules, I love, love opening a new book. If I don't like it, I get terribly disappointed because I want *so* much to like it. So, you could say I'm predisposed to liking the books I open.

GOOD NEWS!

I had no idea I'd log onto so many comments! I'm so sorry for being absent most of the day. I had so many errands to run and the girls are all over the place.

BUT, I have awesome news! In the midst of my chaotic Monday morning, I received a call from my agent and sold book #3 to Silhouette Desire! WOO-HOO! This will more than likely be out in early 2011! I'm so happy and I'm glad I get to share on my blog daySmile. Appropriate, don't ya think that we were just discussing books, learning and what-not?

Me, Again

You know, reading the comments again, I realized we all like one thing in the romances we read...HAPPY ENDINGS! No, it's not always that way with life, but that's why we escape to the romance novels. They are realistic, yet their lives are wrapped up in a nice little package. Secretly we all wish that was us, but we'll just settle for the bookWink

Good for you

Congratulations on selling your 3rd book to Desire. Just remember, whether it's your 3rd book or your 30th book your harlequin/silhouette friends and fans are here for you. I just recently discovered blogging and one thing I have discovered here. Everyone shares in our happiness and our sorrows. Even though I haven't been here long I feel like I know some of you already. I don't know if it's been done before but maybe we need to blog sometime and have everyone tell where they are from. For us newbies we would be able to visualize where you all are. Just a thought.

Where I'm From

I live in a very small town in Ohio. And when I say small, I mean it! We have no stop lights, most of the roads are gravel or dirt, there are farms EVERYWHERE and the closest book store is one hour away. I can handle it all except the bookstore thing...that just hurts me to sayYell.

Congrats Jules!!!

Awesome news on making your 3rd sale to Desire!!!

<Can your internet bill be tax deductible?> LOL Christa! Now that would be something!

I read anything (when I have the time) but it totally depends on what I'm reading as to what my expectations are. If I'm reading romance then there had better be an HEA or else! I think I'm a little unforgiving. But I love to find out about places and real people who have made an impact on the world. I guess the end result just has to be worth the time I've invested.

Congratulations on the sale.

I am sure it feels good to make that next sale.

The hour away from a book store would be hard for me also.

School Days

I loved school too. Maybe that's why I am a teacher...I get to still be the place I love and get paid for doing it...thought that's definitely not my main motivation.
