Stray completely surprised me. I usually don't read books that are in first person.

The heroine Faythe is a grad student with an attitude. In Faythe's eyes her mother is "Susie Homemaker" and rejects that role with full force of an adult werecat. That attitude gets her into trouble with not only her pride, but puts her into real danger.
