A Suitable Mistress by Cathy Williams (Presents January 1999 2006)

Dane Sutherland was rich, powerful, and sinfully gorgeous. He had it all-but he wanted more! He wanted Suzanne...and she was equally determined not to fall into his arms, or his bed!

I liked the hero in this one. He wasn't a rich and powerful man looking to take advantage of the poor down-trodden girl as Presents and now Desire heroes can sometimes be.  He wanted to rescue her.  She was his best friend's little sister and her family had been mistreated by his stepmother.  He wanted to make amends. She didn't see it that way of course. She thought he was trying to control her.  It didn't help that there was an evil woman trying to push her out of his life. This one was a good book. I didn't want to throw it or kill the hero. The heroine grew on me. At first, I wanted to slap her, but by the end of the book, I was rooting for her.
