Summer Fun by Molly Evans

summerfun.png

What's everyone doing out there for summer fun? It's now August and my son has returned to his year-'round school. He's glad, because he was getting bored at home with me. It's tough to be nine and soooooo bored. I, however, could never work again a day in my life and never be bored. There are so many things to do! Reading and writing, of course, but there are socks to learn how to knit, handmade cards to make, which of course, requires many trips to the craft store(s), new recipes to try out, gardening, and of course, luxury time at the coffee shop writing and reading without distractions (laundry and dishes). Eek!

So what have you done so far this summer to enjoy yourselves, treat yourselves, travel with your family or on a trip with the girls? (I went to the RWA conference in Washington, DC)

Most recently, I tried a new recipe with my own twist for Calabacitas. Squash, New Mexican style. And very yummy. I've also eaten a ton of watermelon, my favorite fruit.

Molly, it's winter down

Molly, it's winter down here but we had three weeks school holidays in late June/July and the 'B' word is banned at our house Wink  I have a boredom box. The kids write down achieveable things they enjoy doing and that can range from arts and crafts, kicking a ball, riding a bike, baking biscuits etc, all sorts of things and each idea gets folded up and put in the box. If they are at a loss of something to do they go and pick something out of the Boredom Box. The rule is they have to do whatever they pull out and it works a treat. And if they are so out of sorts then I send them to bed with a talking book!  Always reenergises them

Bored? Me? Never!

I have a very clear memory of my grandmother (Mum's Mum - salt of the earth) fixing one of my brothers with piercing blue-grey eyes and pronouncing... 'Bored? How can you be bored? Only stupid people are bored, and I didn't think you were stupid.'

And I honestly can't remember ever being bored as a child. Even without computers and mobile phones we could always find or invent something to do. There were games to play, books to read, bikes to ride, things to make. The summer holidays were never long enough for everything I had to cram into them.

Summers as a 'grown-up' are just the same, except with the games replaced by decorating and gardening, but there's still time for sitting beside the pond watching perfect tiny frogs no bigger than my little fingernail play hide-and-seek under the water-lily leaves while the scent of lavender wafts around me with the sound of happy bees... and of course, a book in my hand.

Josie

Did something for myself!

I went to fitness camp this summer.  It really changed my outlook on life and my writing.  It was the same week as Nationals, so I had to miss RWA this year.  I think I'm writing better and more focused now.

I love the "Boredom Box" idea.  Good thing my kids (5, 3, and 2) are too little to be bored.  They find excitement in everything.  I wish I had the luxury of being bored, but I've got too much stuff to do! I love summer and wish it would never end.

The B word

Oh Molly, I'm with you - I could nevr work another day and never, ever  be bored. Reading and travelling are 2 fantastic pursuits that come to mind.

LOL Josie, my Mum used to say the same thing - only unintelligent people get bored. We were all too mortified to think our mother might think we were stupid to even mention the B word. Then she would say - read a book. God, I love that woman Laughing

Where was this fitness camp? I used to go to a women's fitness camp at the YMCA near where I grew up, and dh loved it b/c I came back in the best mood. But they keep changing the week, and I haven't been able to go in 3 or 4 years . . .

I spent a few days by myself at my sister's while she took the kids to Yellowstone. It went by waaaay too fast.

Why didn't I think of that?

Fiona,

I'm going to have to borrow/steal/copyright infringe on your Boredom Box idea.  That's fabulous and sounds like it works to keep the B-Monster away.

Tiny frogs

Josie,

that is a lovely description of your frog pond.  I was never bored as a kid either.  I was a child of the woods in the spring, summer, falls.  We lived out in the country with acres and acres of forests, streams and ponds to be explored.  I was forever dragging home buckets of salamanders, lizards and frogs for my mother to ooh and aah (and roll her eyes) over.  Good memories.

Fitness Camp

Nicki,

I'm so envious of fitness camp.  Sounds like a really good time for you.  Frankly, I'd never heard of an adult fitness camp, but it sounds great.  Hopefully you'll get to enjoy it every year.

Yeah, I'm borrowing that Boredom Box, too!

Intelligent Moms

Amy,

I do recall saying the boredom word a few times, but my mother never questioned my intelligence, she gave me housework to do instead.  There's an instant cure for boredom.  But now, if things are slow or my mind is chaotic, I do pick up a book and leave the dust where it is.

Penn

Hilton Head Health Institute in South Carolina.  Most fun eating right and exercising I've ever had, plus I was there with my best friend.  It was hard being away from my family for a full week, but once I got there I realized I deserved it.  I'm tracking my progress in a blog, so I have public accountability for sticking to my goals.  Really and trully I've found that my writing has improved, too!  I would give my summer and A+.

Penn, it sounds like you are in a good fitness place.  Can I recruit you to be one of my motivators?

Molly, if I go next summer I will absolutely take you with me!

The B word ...

I know some people don't believe me, but I can honestly say that I've never been bored.  Yes, there is the odd occasion when I can't settle to something but I've never been able to understand how anyone can ever be bored when there are so many things to do!!  Or not do if the mood takes you and you just want a rare brief moment to do nothing, and maybe just sit and enjoy whatever is around you, be that a garden or beautiful countrside or indulging in people-watching.   Aside from whatever hobbies one has, be that sport or crafting or gardening or anything else, there is reading!  I shall never be able to read all the books I want to in a life time!

It's very true, though, that once one works from home and gives up what others refer to as a "proper job", you wonder how on earth you ever had time to go to work!!!  There just aren't enough hours in the day.

Best wishes,

Margaret

Nicki, I'm going with you

Absolutely, Nicki.  Let me know if you're going next year and I'd love to go.  I love HHI.  One of my favorite spots on the east coast.  Sigh.  Fond memories here.

Margaret, you are so right.  Boredom is just not in my makeup.  Not being able to settle on one thing to do, now there's a problem.  I have so many projects and books and things that I want to do that I'll never live long enough.  I may outlive the stash of quilting fabric in my closet, too.

Oh, the "B" word! I love it!

Oh, the "B" word! I love it! I remember one time whining that I was bored when I was around seven or eight. I got the "only unintelligent people who won't use their imagination are ever bored" lecture. (And don't even get me started about the "I can't vs I won't" words--my mom had a whole lecture about saying "I can't", too.)

I discovered during the summer of my youth there are many things that imaginative people can do. I do not recall ever feeling bored since then. Reading, writing and playing an instrument, singing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, 'communing' have filled my time for as long as I can remember.

I have very little time off this summer, but in two weeks my youngest daughter and I will be attending a "French Accents" fiddle camp. We will be playing Quebecois fiddle music. I'll be playing the cello, my dd is the fiddler.

Bored.

Molly-

I never told my Mom I was bored more than once-she also made me do housework. My two boys don't go back to school until August 17th.

I have played a lot of the game Sorry  this summer and visited more tourist attractions in New Mexico due to a lot of family visiting us.

stuff to do

Nancy,

you are so right.  There are a great many number of things to do in a day, a summer, a life.  Right now, I'm catching up on my new favorite Scy Fy show: Eureka.  If these characters get bored, they simply blow something up!   There are some incredibly complicated characters in this show.  So if anyone feels the B-word coming on, check out Eureka.

Right now, we're reworking out back yard, so that's a real pleasure.  My husband likes the final product of things, but I like fussing with arrangements of plants, trying here, trying there before deciding where things look best.  We put in a sitting area under the apple and cherry trees, which is just lovely to sit under in the evenings.  So no boredom around here.

Summer fun or lack thereof

Sadly, there's no summer fun looming on my horizon, as I'm spending it taking care of my DF, who has become ill rather suddenly.  My DD, however, is leaving for France on Thursday for a week before the next semester begins.  I guess I'll have to get my summer fun vicariously. Frown

France?

Wow.  France is one way to have a summer trip. I've never been over seas, so Ireland, Scotland and Wales are my top three destinations when I finally do get there.  Maybe next summer . . .

Love the picture

Hi Molly,

I'll be flying out to New England to meet my hubby in Portsmouth at the end of his 3,629 bicycle trip.  I've got nearly 40,000 words to show for my time alone, and hosted an Italian girl in an International home stay in July.

I think kids these days think they have to be doing something constantly, but I remember lying around and staring at the sky (like Lucy and Charlie Brown) and making up pictures from clouds, and daydreaming, and building little cities from discarded boxes, and creating my own paper dolls and designing clothes for them and ... well, I don't remember being bored that much as kids seem to be today...

Best Wishes,

That's a busy bit of time

Lynne,

that's certainly a lot of miles your hubby rode and your fingers wrote while he was gone.  Wow.  Congratulations on your progress.  The exchange student sounds fun.

Yeah, I'm with you on spending time outside and looking up at clouds.  but then I was usually climbing a tree and digging up ferns and other plants to build my own terrariums.  That's how I stayed busy.  Bored was never in my vocabular then and certainly not now.

Have a wonderful trip and say hello to the E. Coast for me.

Don't forget Cornwall!

Cornwall? I'm so there, too.

Josie,

when I read your post, I actually sighed and went somewhat limp.  I love the sound of Cornwall!  so when I plan my trip to the UK and Cornwall, I'll let you  know and you can give me some advice on places to see.  But from the sounds of it, I'd like to see it all.  The coastline sounds so inviting.  Sigh-again.

Wedding planning

I was never so exhausted as when I was on the approach to my wedding.  We married in my home state of Pa and doing things long distance was a bit of a task, but thankfully, my mom was all over it.  Helped enormously.  Once it got to a certain point though, it all fell into place and was worth the energy.

Of course, all my husband did was throw up the morning of the wedding.  Nerves, he said.  Hmmm.  I'm wondering though.

Summer fun

Hi Molly

Dropping in from Australia where the kids have just gone back to school after the winter holidays. They're never bored in summer, being boys they can spend the day outside in the garden and the pool but winter is a different story. Last year was the first time they'd ever come to me with the 'b' word - they were aged 7 & 9 then. I gave them a version of Fiona's boredom box. They had to write a list of 20 things they thought they could do ( i added some like 'mop the floor'Smile  and 'add more things to the list' ) now we have a list of 113 things and it's still growing. So now my answer is "check the list and if there's still nothing to do I'm sure i can find you a job!"

Emily who's looking forward to summer!

Holiday Migration

We've had a winter holiday travelling in the north of Australia during the dry season - it's gorgeous this time of year. Dont think I'd like to be there for the 'wet' though - too humid.  But I can see that I could easily become migratory - summer down south, winter up north.... now if we could just find a way to finance that!  LOL

Laughed at the "housework cure" for boredom - that would have fixed me! Tongue out

Nicki and JV,

Oh, Nicki, I think you should motivate me. I used to be in shape, but now I just can't motivate myself to excercise.

JV, Where in France is your dd going? We were 4 weeks in Toulouse in '06, and then when my class was over, I made my dh fly over and we did the sightseeing thing for two weeks in Brittany and Normandy. LOVED it. Of course, having kids with me and speaking French well enough to have basic conversations allowed people to approach me, be extra nice to me, dote on the kids.

Penn,

She's in the Dijon area (specifically in Mâlain) until about Tuesday, staying with the family of her former exchange partner from the end of her freshman year in high school (May, 2005).  Then, I was nervous about her ability to get along because she had only had one year of French.  However, her teacher told me that she had such a good accent and did so well that she thought she'd been studying it for at least 3 years prior.  As it happens, all my worries were for naught.  When she apologized to one French merchant for not knowing how to say something, he told her he was shocked because he'd thought she was French.

Needless to say, after 3 additional years of French in high school and now a year in college (where she's minoring in French), her skills have improved a great deal.  She really has a natural talent for languages, including American Sign Language, which she took in high school, too.  She also placed on the National French Test every year in high school and tied for first place her senior year in the state language festival for speaking and for comprehension.  So I have no worries about her ability to get along now, which is a relief especially since she's not traveling in a group this time but is making all her own arrangements.

From there, they'll go to Paris to spend a couple of days before her return home.  This is her boyfriend's first time out of the country, and he's been studying French from some computer software we let him borrow.  I know they're having a great time!

A friend and I went to Paris a long time ago, back in 1980, but we didn't speak French.  We managed to get along just fine because we could figure out enough of what was written from our studies of Spanish and bits and pieces we'd picked up, but it would have been much easier in general if we'd been at least semi-fluent.

Fiona, genius idea

Boredom box - going to have to steal that one :o)

Our school holidays here are 7 weeks (just over 3 weeks to go). One week is our family holiday, the week after is pottering about while DH is still on hols, and then what we do depends on the weather. Good days, we might go to the beach or the park; wet days, it'll be ten-pin bowling or the cinema. There's also baking (son will be glued to the x-box during the actual making of things, but enjoys being a taste-tester), art, board games and, now my littlest has been taking guitar lessons, playing our own music.

summer boredom

My kids stopped with the "there's nothing to do" with the advent of the computers and the internet. DS if I let him will spend hours game playing, researching stuff and watching old movies and TV shows on the internet. The thing is to get him away from the computer and outside. Teenagers just don't always respond positively to mother telling them what to do!!
