A Super Party

FishermansWharf.jpg

San Francisco...a city of water, of cable cars, of hills and great food!

Last week, it was also the setting for the SuperRomance Authors' first ever reader party.  It was held right after the huge booksigning at Romance Writers of America's annual conference.  Kay Stockham organized it, and Ellen Hartman had a wonderful contest...maybe I can get her to post her questions over here.  I can't remember when I laughed so much!

There were tiaras everywhere, and prizes for the winners of the trivia contest.  Chocolate and wine.  Readers and writers.

Stay-tuned...pictures will be in the response section.

Trivia Game

Hi Holly,

Here are the Trivia Questions. For anyone who's planning for next year, we had a pre-game contest and gave away a bunch of books in a blog here before the conference. We also gave away a "Wish You Were Here" prize package to a reader who couldn't make the conference.

At the party we had 11 STUFFED gift bags to give away. Really amazing to see how many great books were shared. I had a terrific time at the party and in our thread party beforehand.

Here are the official quiz questions, just for fun!

1. Two Superromance authors live in Erie, PA. Are they:
a. Jacqueline Susann and Holly Jacobs
b. Susan Gable and Holly Jacobs
c. John Grisham and Stephen King (and Holly Jacobs)
d. Pennsylvania? I thought romance authors were from the south.

2. In 2007, at least 4 Superromances included the words "Dad" or "Father" in the title. Name one of those books.
(Temporary Father, All-American Father, Dad for Life, Father Material)

Bonus Question: A Superromance with the word "Mom" in the title is nominated for a Rita. Name that book.
(Make-Believe Mom by Elaine Grant)

3. Which one of the following is the title of an upcoming Superromance?
a. Her Favorite Husband by Caron Todd
b. The Wedding Heiress by Pamela Ford
c. The Tycoon Prince's Secret Greek Baby Mama by Paris Hilton
d. Moby Dick

4. One of the Superromance editors has a crush on a TV character. Which pair is a match made in heaven?
a. Wanda and the Fonz from Happy Days.
b. Victoria and Sam Winchester (the tall brother) from Supernatural.
c. Johanna and the Wiggle in the Red Shirt (Murray)

5. This party grew out of an idea Kay Stockham had on the Superomance thread on the eHarlequin site. Because one of the most dedicated eHarlequin Super authors couldn’t be here, I included a question in her honor. In Carrie Weaver’s, The Temporary Nanny, the nanny is:
a. An ex-miner newly home from Russia who meets the kid by tapping out Morse code on the ceiling of his apartment.
b. An out of work single mother of quintuplets who takes the job in exchange for cases of Goldfish and juice boxes.
c. That Saint Bernard from Peter Pan.
d. Fran Drescher.

6. For all the geeks in the room who might be struggling with the literary questions, here’s a Super Math problem!
1. Take the number of Supers published each month.
2. Multiply by the number of months in a year.
3. Add the number of books in Amy Knupp’s Salinger Sisters trilogy.
4. Subtract the number of books in CJ Carmichael’s Three Good Men trilogy.
Answer?

7. Helen Brenna’s Superromance Treasure is nominated for a Rita this year. Name the other Harlequin line Helen wrote for in 2007.
a. Harlequin Duets. (Hint: This is not the correct answer. Holly “The Line Killer” Jacobs killed the Duets line before Helen had her first sale.)
b. Harlequin NASCAR.
c. Harlequin Barbie. (A lesser-known line where all the characters are plastic and the setting can be summed up with one word—pink.)
d. Harlequin Horror on the High Seas. (Nautical romances with crossover appeal for Stephen King fans.)

8. In 2007 and 2008, Superromance released the Texas Hold ‘Em continuity series. Authors included Cynthia Thomason, Deb Salonen, Tara Taylor Quinn, Linda Style, and Linda Warren. Question: What were the Texans in this series holding?
a. Greased pigs.
b. Wide receivers for the other team.
c. Playing cards.
d. Cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

9. Kay Stockham is in the middle of a connected series. The name of the series includes the last name of the family and their address. What is the correct name for this series? Hint: The family name is also the name of a college.
a. The Yales of Youngstown (could be…Kay is from Ohio).
b. The Mount St. Marys of Modesto.
c. The Gonzagas of Greenwich.
d. The Tulanes of Tennessee.

10. Several Super authors share the same first name. Which of the following groups of same-name people are Superromance authors?
a. Barney Fife, Barney Rubble, and Barney the Purple Dinosaur.
b. Madonna: Huh. Turns out there’s only one of her, it just seems like there are more.
c. Linda Barrett, Linda Style, Linda Warren.
d. Mary-Frances, Mary-Deirdre, Mary-Kathleen, and Mary-Elizabeth. (Oops, sorry. Those were the O’Toole sisters from my old neighborhood).

Grand Prize. One of the Superromance authors in the room is wearing a tiara she won in an actual beauty contest because she is a bona fide small-town beauty queen. Which of the following is the correct name of the beauty queen author and her official title?
a. Ellen Hartman: Title: Miss “Give Me a Damn Tiara Before I Buy One for Myself” 2007.
b. Jeannie Watt: Title: Bestowed in 2008 by the Federation of Folks Living Off the Grid: Best Legs in High Heels and Sweat Socks (This is how all the smart folks break in their conference shoes!)
c. Kim Van Meter: Title: Maid of Mariposa County 1990

Kaelee

Kaelee, Okay, so don't listen to people.  I mean, just because they call me Holly the Line Slayer (thanks to fellow Buffy fan, Susan Gable) doesn't mean I'm responsible.  After all, I never wrote for Love and Laughter!  LOL Really, you do need to come to DC, if only to come to the Super Author party!!
