Superstitious or Not?

friday 13.jpg

Hi there,

Laura Iding dropping in today on Friday the 13th to find out how superstitious you’re feeling today. Any black cats cross your path lately? Have you walked under a ladder? Break a mirror? See an owl in the daylight? All of these things, and many more are universal superstitions about bad luck.

A few interesting facts about the unlucky 13:

·         More than 80% of high-rises lack a 13th floor.

·         Many airports skip the 13th gate.

·         Airplanes have no 13th aisle.

·         Hospitals and hotels often don’t have room 13.

·         Italians omit the number 13 from their national lottery.

For me, Friday the 13th is a good day. A lucky day. Thirteen is one of my favorite numbers, thankfully I don’t live in Italy and I use 13 on every lottery ticket I buy (which admittedly isn’t many). Today is also my birthday which seems like a good thing, since without a birthday I would likely be dead. J  And twenty-two years ago, I went into the hospital on my birthday which also happened to fall on Friday November 13th to have my daughter six weeks early. Now that might sound a little unlucky, being pre-eclamptic certainly wasn’t fun, but all in all, my daughter did wonderfully well. She was the biggest baby in the Neonatal ICU at a whopping four pounds six ounces. And she’s a beautiful college student now, so I’m thinking, yep, that was a lucky day. A fantastically, lucky day.

I hear a lot about superstitions but I have to confess, there aren’t many I worry about. Yep, I’m the one who breaks all those chain e-mails people send me. The one superstition I tend to believe has to do with the full moon and crazy people. That one I do buy into, even though no scientist has ever proved the phenomenon.

So what superstitions to you follow? Any? Or which one do you think is the most ridiculous? I’d love to give one lucky commenter a free copy of my November Christmas Book: Expecting A Christmas Miracle.

Thanks for stopping by,

Laura

Count me in.

hi Laura,

count me among the superstitious, especially when there's a full moon and I'm on-call.  People and families get overly excited.  I saw a tv show that investigated the full moon belief that there were more births, deaths, and murders and supposedly debunked the myth.  I'm a believer in it though.  I've been a nurse too long not to.  I've also had several black cats, so I don't believe in that one.  and i think we have a friendly ghost in our house.

And happy birthday!  Hope you have a good one and your DH takes you out some place swanky for dinner.

Happy Birthday, Laura!

And congratulations on your daughter's birth and birthday, too!

Friday, November 13th (still a few hours away for me here in KY) is also my DD's boyfriend's 21st birthday.  Now, I have no particular superstition about that, but I can see how that could possibly be an unlucky day for my DD's boyfriend since he will now be officially old enough to drink.  However, to help insure that he doesn't accidentally drink too much and drive because of not knowing how much alcohol he can handle, she has already told him she'd come and pick him up tonight.

I agree with you on the full moon thing.  Based on my own personal experience, I believe that the full moon brings out the crazies in people.  I don't have any idea why this would be the case, but it seems to be.  Many times I've wondered what was up with people on a given day, and then someone will say, "Oh, it's a full moon!"

Even though I'm not superstitious about it, when a friend or family member and I walk around opposite sides of a pole, I tend to say "Bread and Butter" or sometimes "Pan y Mantequilla" just because it's fun.  Like you, I'm the first one to break those darned chain letters and emails -- especially the ones that promise that Bill Gates or Cracker Barrel or Neiman Marcus is going to send me something wonderful if I pass it along.  Funny ones I'll be glad to forward, but not those.  I just deleted one today.  In fact, I used to respond to them with a little video of a guy on a soapbox saying that no one can trace your emails, etc.

I'm also the one who doesn't hesitate to open an umbrella in the house or to let a black cat (my father's cat is black) cross my path.  I do take extra care that he doesn't cross anyone else's path around this time of year, though, because there are some sickos out there who are inclined to do nasty things to black cats around Halloween.

I can't help it...

I'm Indian, and though not all are, there are many who believe in things you couldn't possibly wrap your mind around.  I think my favorite by far is this:  if you accidentally break a glass, it's a good sign.  Now, this one's new to me, but glasses have been falling from my hands like crazy lately, and yes, shattering, so maybe, maybe, it means good news is on the horizon...like someone wanting to buy my stories, perhaps?  Haha, who knows, but here's hoping!

Lucky the 13th doesn't

Lucky the 13th doesn't bother me cos there have been 3 Friday the 13ths this year.

My parents always make a fuss about the 13th as they were married on this day 55 years ago and man, I've just realised I never rang them to say Happy Anniversary and now it's a bit late at night down here, oops! I better be very contrite tomorrow!!! and early !!

Superstitious? Me?

My Dad was so determined not to be superstitious that he once deliberately walked under a ladder... and got a pot of paint on his head.

But then he met and married my mum who was born on Friday 13th and they had thirteen children together... so was that good luck or bad!?

I was born on 19th and was worried for years that it was prophetic!

Josie

Happy Birthday, Laura!

I come from a long line of superstitious women - I think it's the Irish ancestors!  I still remember my mother's utter horror the first time I put new shoes on the table - and since she yelled and I nearly died of a heart attack, maybe it is bad luck!  Wink  Spilt sugar over one shoulder, salt over the other. Honestly it's hard work being superstitious!

But I must admit I've grown out of it mostly now - and I break the chain letters too.  I don't like that subtle (or not so subtle) blackmail element that they come with at the end. There are too many vulnerable people out there being manipulated by the promises of good fortune, or the threat that not passing it on to 5/7/9 people in the next five minutes will mean bad things.

I do have a new superstition in our house now though - the day I got the call from the editor, my husband discovered I'd sent him to work in odd socks (one black, one navy)  So I reckon that's a fun superstition - if I want something good to happen I need to send him off to work in odd socks!  A good look when he's all dressed up in his suit!

Smile

Happy birthday, Laura and daughter!

Not that superstitious here - I break chain letters and chain texts (always amuses me that the person who sends the texts to me clearly hasn't twigged that the mobile phone companies make money out of these so they encourage them...). But I do remember my mum refused to have red and white flowers together without another colour to break them up (she was a nurse and she said that it meant "blood and bandages"), and I have to admit that's one I keep!

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday Laura!

I'm not at all superstitious, but my sister is. She won't have three lights on, or walk under ladders and throws salt over her shoulder when she spills it. I don't know how she can move some days, she's so busy taking precautions. As some of you know she came with us to SA recently. The day before we were due to leave she found the death tarot card tucked into her passport. I am truly amazed she agreed to get on the plane. Needless to say, she survived the trip.

I also ignore those chain messages. I tell my niece (who does worry) to pass them to me and I'll break the chain for her.

Okay having said all that- maybe I'd better touch wood. Just in case you know?

Do things happen in threes?

Do things happen in threes... especially on Friday 13th?

Today, a friend's car engine blew up - right after she'd had it serviced, another friend had her windscreen shattered by a stone kicked up by the car that overtook her... and I burned dessert.

Yeah, yeah, I know I'm supposed to be on a diet, but it was going to be a deliciously sharp lemony-sauce-at-the-bottom-with-fluffy-sponge-on-top pud and it just needed another couple of moments to be perfect but...

My family didn't nick-name me Alfie for nothing (as in King Alfred who burned the cakes when he got distracted)

But...

Apparently the police *like* Friday 13th because there are *fewer* accidents - because the scaredy-cats have all stayed at home. They hate Saturday 14th because accident figures go up!

Josie

Happy Birthday Laura

My ex-husband was born on Friday the 13th and he also thought it was a lucky day.  I guess I am somewhat superstitious.  I never pick 13 as a lucky (or lottery) number.  But, I break e-mail chains all the time.

Happy Friday the 13th

Happy Friday the 13th Birthday Laura!

Okay, I fly all the time and never realized that some airlines don't have row 13.  I just had to look that up and see which ones. :-)  Interesting.  I'm not superstitious of the number 13 but have other weird ones.  Like I never cross the day off a calendar or rip off a calendar page until it is 100% over or I fear my day will end badly.  No clue where that one came from cuz it's not something my mom instilled in me or anything I ever read.  Must have happened to me once or something.

Very fun post! :-)

I may (okay, do) have a few

I may (okay, do) have a few superstitions, but Friday the 13th has never been one of them. Knock wood.Wink But today my co-worker and I managed to direct paperwork to the wrong sister site. Fortunately, we realized it before Monday, so all should be well. (G-d willing and the creek don't rise.Wink

As I nurse who watched too many wacky evening when the moon was full, I do believe there is something to that. And there is too much fey blood flowing through my blood vessels to discount all superstitions, but I try not to let them control my behavior.

I'm another person who is guaranteed to break the chain mail that floods my email inbox.

Years ago one of my friends and I hosted a Friday the 13th party, we had squads more people show up, but they all came with drinks or food. All comers were welcomed into the house. It was a blast!

Happy Birthday!

Laura, hope you had a fabulous birthday!! Your daughter, too!!  That's wild that she was also born on a Friday the 13th!!

As far as superstitious...maybe that explains this week.  ;)  Seriously, I can't say that I'm overly superstitious, but there are things that creep me out or send goosebumps up my spine so maybe I'm more superstitious than I think?

Yowsers.

Right off the top, I'd like to wish you many happy regards for your birthday.  "And many moooooore!" as the song goes....

As for superstitions, I am also someone who breaks those emails.  As soon as I see something that says you must send it on, I either delete the entire email without reading further or I forward it on MINUS all that crap at the bottom about it being a chain email.

I won't walk under a ladder for the exact reason given earlier -- something can fall down on me!  Duh!

When I was a teenager, I purposely walked on sidewalk cracks ("Step on a crack, break your mother's back!").  My mom was not the easiest person to live with.  'Nuf said.  Oh!  BTW, she never broke her back!  Funny that!

I have no problem with sitting in Aisle 13 or requesting 13 on a lottery ticket.

I often DO wonder about bad things happening in threes, but it's like your horoscope:  you can make it come true if you manipulate the obscure examples enough.  For example, when two people die near the same time, you wonder who the third person will be.  (Case in point:  Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and then Michael Jackson all in 24 hours.)

The 13th

Thanks everyone for the great comments and the nice birthday wishes. Sorry I haven't been responding very quickly my day was crazy busy and then my dh showed up to take me out to dinner. No computer! I almost asked him to go home to get my laptop. Almost. :)

The issue of three's is something I do see often too, so maybe I am supersitious about that.

I'll try to respond to your individual posts too, but wanted to at least say thanks to all of you for stopping by...

I was raised superstitious

I am not allowed to walk in the front door then exit the back door. My grandmother always said that you had to go out the same door you came in or it was bad luck. Black cat crossing is bad luck. Breaking a mirror is 7 years bad luck. Walking under a ladder, rocking a rocking chair with no one in it, walking over someone laying in the floor, and the list goes on and on and on they are all suppose to be bad luck. My grandmother drives me crazy. I have tried several of these things she has said and nothing terrible has happened. So I am not a huge believer in all of it.

Molly's Ghost

Molly, you have a friendly ghost? When I was growing up we had a friendly ghost in our house too, but he must have stayed in the house after my parents moved.

My mom had a black cat too, so we never believed that one either.

JV's DD's Boyfriend's Birthday

JV, I think that's very sweet of your DD to pick up her boyfriend on his birthday. I also learned watching the news yesterday morning that it's our weatherman's wife's birthday too. Lots of November 13th birthdays all of a sudden.

I'm so glad I am not the only one who breaks those e-mail chains.

Hetal's glasses

Hi Hetal, I have not heard the one about breaking glasses being lucky. You'll have to tell us if that is really true now that you've broken a few, lol.

I think many of these supersitions come from our ancient ancestors so it's not too surprising to hear some cultures have deeply rooted beliefs.

Beth's calendar

Hi Beth,

I never thought about the crossing off the day on the calendar before the day is over as being unlucky, but I can understand why someone would think that way. Come to think of it, we often cross days off the calendar's in our patient's rooms for them, but usually not until the next morning. This helps them keep track of time when they're sick. Maybe I should send an e-mail to all the nurses not to cross the days off early, lol.

I didn't know that about airlines either, but will have to pay attention the next time I fly. I know our hospital does have room 13, so apparently we didn't follow that superstition either.

Hi Janice,

So sorry you had a rough week. Just to clarify my birthday is on the 13th, and I was pre-eclamptic so they told me to come to the hospital and that I would be induced to deliver. But my daughter was not born until Sunday. Sorry for the confusion.

I had forgotten all about

I had forgotten all about the entering and exiting the same door until mentioned here. My mother and grandmother were both adamant about that one. Another thing they used to say to me was, "Wash and wipe together, quarrel and fight forever." They would get upset if I dropped the dish towel on the floor, "company's coming, go pick up the living room."

If any of us dropped a knife on the floor, a man would be visiting. If we dropped a fork, a woman would be stopping by and a spoon meant a child would be coming over.

If you managed to peel all the apple skin in one long coil, drop it over your right should. The look at the letter it created and it was the first initial of you future spouse.

I'm not saying I believe any of these sayings, but it is fun recalling them. This is a fun blog!

Uh-oh! Statistics bite!

Should have kept my big mouth shut about there being more problems on the road on Saturday 14th.

So, who was stood at the side of the road in the pouring rain and howling gale waiting for the rescue man to come and fix our dead car today?

Apparently the butterfly valve in the fuel line was stuck and the man had never seen it happen before, so he was very happy to have found it and fixed it.

I was just happy to get in the car and thaw out with the heater on full power (and get to the nearest loo!)

Happy belated....

to Laura, her daughter and JV's daughters bf!  My older sister's 13 birthday was on Friday Feb 13th.  It was a good day for me, as I was allowed to crash her slumber party!  LOL!  We watched CARRIE, and I've hated horror movies ever since.....  This past Friday I traveled with my DH to visit my family for the weekend with no problems (although there was almost an accident in front of us just as we were leaving downtown Nashville, but it was ALMOST!  LOL!).  I honestly don't remember ever having a bad Friday the 13th!

I have always found superstitions interesting.  I can't think of any my family has (which is interesting with the Scots/Irish and Cherokee blood in my veins), but DH won't allow me to close a pocket knife he's opened.  I break the chain mail, too.

However, the full moon thing is SOOOOOOO true!  I worked ER registration for 5 LONG months, and every full moon, it was more than insane!  I've also worked with adults with developmental disabilities, and they always had more behavioral events during the few days before through the few days after, the day of the full moon being the worst.  Even now, working as a sleep tech, I notice our patients are more whiney and less apt to sleep well on a full moon night.  NO ONE will ever make me believe any different!

Congrats, Yenastone!

Hugs,
April

It's not just the full moon.

It's not just the full moon that does it.

When I was teaching on a day when there was a blustery wind, there were groans in the staff room from all those who were teaching kids in the side of the building where the wind was striking because it would be almost impossible to get them to sit still and concentrate on anything... and it didn't matter whether they were eleven or eighteen.
