The Surgeon's Runaway Bride by Olivia Gates (Medical Romance Oct. 2007)

Paisley
Format: Print Books

Intense romance set in the Amazon of Brazil! Wow! Another can't put down stay up til 4am book!

Out in the medical field as remote as one can get --- the Amazon rainforest among indigent tribes ---- Jewel Johanssen runs smack into the one person she had hoped to escape --- her husband Rogue Aguiar Da Costa! Electric, explosive, sexual tension behind every look or move. But sometimes even earth-moving sex is just not enough. With their past and their differences, Jewel must get away from this man but sometimes true love just can't be denied.

This medical romance starts out with a dramatic snake bite scene and the medical drama increases as the expedition reaches into the depths of the Amazon. The romance in The Surgeon's Runaway Bride is even more intense! Some very fun humorous banter, including the medical banter.

In several places, particularly at the beginning, I just thought: Olivia Gates must have had a whole lot of fun writing this! I am not even a medical person and as a reader I just had so much fun envisioning these scenes playing out...the kind of scenes that would be sooo much fun for actors and actresses.

I have read a snake bite scene in two medicals now. It was fun to have some reader knowledge that I gained from the first to the second. Also I found it intriguing how each author handled it differently, each integrating it so well into the fictional world.

What a great and intense read! Start this one early in the evening because it might suck you into an all nighter if you let open your heart to it! I had only planned to read a chapter or two since I had already finished a great HR read earlier. Two words for Olivia Gates' Medical Romance: Intense and wow.

Next medical read: Janice Lynn's The Doctor's Pregnancy Bombshell. A debut. A bit excited...debut author..almost debut Medical reader.

OOOh Good!

I have this one on top to read next. I just finished one by her the other day. This one sounds great. I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks for the excellent review and if I didn't already have this book I'd have to find it.

Need more by this author.

Thanks!  What book do you have of hers?  I need to read more by this author.  Hope she has another coming out soon!

Merri

Penn set up a dinner when she was here for RWA and she gave us three of her books. Read all those now and then I have the one you just read. The three she gave us were Mills & Boone. Don't think you can get them here.  I also have two Bombshells she wrote which were great. They are my favorites maybe because I read them first.

Olivia Gates and Bombshells

Oh, if it's a Bombshell, I have it.  Yippee!  I really, really wish we would get all 6 of the Medicals here in NA in book form.  I hope the ebook offering will be a door opening to that. Please, please, please, powers that be...pretty please.

here in North America ..... and she's now writing for Desire as well ..... her first Desire comes out in May, and is the first of a trilogy ... I'm thrilled!   ..... I just love her books!   .... she has two Bombshells, and they are related, so read them in order :)

Her earlier Medicals to this one were a bit more intense and scorching ... and I agree, the images Olivia creates are very much like movie scenes ..... such vivid images  ..... you can find her earlier releases on eBay, usually from the UK ..... well, worth the hunt and extra fees

I haven't yet read an Olivia book that hadn't sucked me in to an all nighter!  .... so I've learnt, I designate special time to read her books .... quiet time, no interruptions .... and then when I'm done I'm finding myself reading it all over again, this time to savour what I had earlier devoured !

Real Life Amazon Heroine -- Great Material

Hi All:

For a great read about a real life heroine working with tribes on the Amazon river read LA Doctora by Linnea Smith.  Dr. Smith is one of the people I most admire in the world. A medical romance writer will find a treasure trove of material in this book and on Dr. Smith's website.

I hope the "Surgeon's Runaway Bride"  comes out as a Special Edition eBook.  This review sure makes me want to read it! Laughing

                 Thanks,

                                Vince

Olivia Gates and medicine in the field

Yes, very intense read. Thanks for the tip on the upcoming Desires by Olivia Gates! Next read I will start earlier because I really could not put this one down.

Vince, that sounds interesting. I went to Haiti in my youth with Habitat for Humanity. We had 2 groups..ours for non-medical people in a very tiny and remote village and then there was another group of nurses who went to provide health care and education in a rural area north of the village where we were. The experience of field medicine aspect really changed the nurses. Most of them went back every year during their vacations.  I had more fun than most of the people in my group because I spoke French and learned a lot of Creole before going so I felt much more at ease just talking to people.

Medicals at Walmart

Today I was scanning books at Walmart and saw they have Medicals on the shelf I thought they weren't sold in stores. None of them were the good sold out ones thoughFrown they looked like next months books. But I take it Medicals will be sold at book stores now it seems.

Never knew what was once warm is now a cold place.

Moonsong .........

apparently that is only a Promotional test for the line .... over on the Rx for Medicals discussion someone mentioned that the next promotional trial for the line will be in June

they're also offering these same four as eBooks under Harlequin Special Releases

I'd love to have them in the stores!  ..... they sell out so fast here at the eHarl store, that you pretty much have to order them the first week they're available ....

now MIlls & Boon UK had announced they were planning to get into eBooks soon ..... so hopefully they will carry the full Medical line that way ...

I would like 6 of the

I would like 6 of the Medicals in NA in book form!!! I feel so deprived. I just can't swing a UK subscription to get all 6 right now between the exchange rate and the shipping costs. My book budget is at its max.

I am glad Harlequin is doing some kind of promotional in the stores.  Thanks for posting the forum info!

Moonsong, I know what you mean about being sold out so quickly! I finally broke down and got subscription. With all the changes at Luna and EL, I decided to rearrange my book budget. Maybe someone will pay attention to all the sold out banners and get more copies printed.

Merri ................

Quite often the UK or AUS Medicals are released later in the US ..... and recently they've been re-releasing them in the US with a Harlequin Presents cover but sold under the Harlequin Special Releases tab in the eHarl store

Watch out for some of the Medical authors that are released that way .... Kate Hardy had a former medical re-released that way under the Posh Docs theme  ....

Retail

Another great review Merri. Ola's books grab you by the scruff of the neck and drag you along for a helluva ride.Laughing

Yes, alas the medicals aren't widely availbale retail - the ones on shelf this month (one is mine - yey!!!) are a part of the Readers Choice programme and the next lot won't be til June/July.

Thanks, Amy

Shelves

I'm going to check the shelves for these, then.  It just annoys me that these books aren't readily available on the shelves.  For a new line, I need to look at the books to see what they are about before just buying, you know?

Debbie..............

Harlequin Medicals aren't a new line .... they were launched in North America January 2001, with 338 editions to-date  .... the fact that they are a Reader Service "subscription" only line means you will not find it in the retail stores, though they are selling them here in the eHarl store as well  ..... now they are trying to expand the readership, so they are testing the market with a few retail promotions .... I believe they've done that in the past

so if you'd like to try out the line, check out the books in the eHarl store ... you'll get the cover blurbs  .... I've asked for the Dear Reader letter, but there's a delay in getting the info. from the UK, so they often don't have that for posting  ...  this one of Olivia's is still available online

I figured out...

that they weren't a new line just a short while ago.  I went out to find the ones on the shelves and saw the numbers and realized they weren't new.  Embarassed  I understand that books are available via the eH site, but I just believe books should be available to all without having to order them from one specific place.  It's just a personal belief of mine so it hit a sore spot to see they are only available online; I'm a firm believer in retail stores.  I used to work in a bookstore.....

I picked up

I picked up Amy's book in the store and looking forward to reading it. It looks really good. I think I will start it this weekend.

books and bookstores

So far I have read 2 of Amy's books and both were very moving. The ending of my last read just really grabbed me...still remember it!

Sometimes it seems like marketing people live in another world from readers. People like going to bookstores and having access to books from a variety of sources and in a variety of forms. Some people love ebooks, some people would not touch them for free. Some people prefer bookstores and seeing a physical book, others prefer to shop online. I am glad to see someone is at least going to try some store promotions so people discover the wonderful Medicals.

I want to be able to get all 6 Medicals in NA. I want to be able to read some of the Harlequin Historicals here in NA that are not available at all in NA. Fortunately, I do have a subscription to all 6 of HH books but even with the two not available in stores, my collection is incomplete because some are not available in NA period. I want more choices, not less.

Anyhow, Olivia Gates' romance is great...think Anne Stuart in terms of cannot pry your fingers away from the pages but also very different because the hero is a doctor not a hired assassin. Very different books and styles but I love the way both these two authors give me a similar intense, riveting read.

Bookstores

That's it exactly, Merri!!!  I want to see a book, especially if it's one I'm debating trying that is outside my comfort zone.  Paranormals and urban fantasies, heck, I can order those with no problem as they are my comfort zone.  But for books outside my comfort zone... I want to see them first.

BTW, I'm reading the Amy Andrews book and enjoying it a lot so far.  So this has been a nice surprise for me as it was really taking a chance for me to try this line.

Nice Surprises

Hey Debbie, pleased you're liking it. Dontcha just love surprises Kiss

We, the med authors, share everyones frustration with the difficulty in getting hold of all 6 books each month and not being able to get them from a store. But I think the more guys like you talk about them the higher the profile will be and then things will start to change

Thanks for blogging about our wonderful line, all of you.

Amy

You're welcome!

And I hope this line soon becomes more easily available as I am impressed by what I'm reading!!

Medical Romance

This line was one of the nicest surprises of the 2007 Challenge.  I really love the medical side because it gives these romances a whole different dimension.  I love books that show compassion as well as passion.  Amy Andrews' medicals are very special too.  I love the sadness and depth in hers.  I have one more of hers in my TBR and I think another one coming soon.

Have You Tried Big Used Book Stores?

Hi All:

Last year I was in a big used bookstore in Tulsa, Gardeners, and they must have had over 100 of the green covered Medicals. I bought about six of them, (I'm not sure where they are now but they stand out real well), but the type was too small for me to read.  It may be worth a try to look into a big used book store.   Would you be interested in early medicals if I could find them for you?

                 Thanks,

                           Vince

UPDATE: Six Books Available

Hi Paisley & Medical Series Fans:

I went to the used book store for a book my mother wanted and the Medical Series books are still there. About 100 books. After a quick look it seems like the most titles were by Lillian Darcy,  Marion Lennox, Lucy Clark, and Olivia Gates. Wow, the first two are major writers. I did not know they wrote Medicals. I have not read any Lucy Clark books. Olivia Gates we know from your review.

I did get six books. Three by Fiona McArthur:  “The Midwife’s Secret”, “Midwife in Need”, and “A Very Single Midwife”.  Three by Amy Andrews: “An Unexpected Proposal”, “The Surgeon’s Meant-to-Be Bride”, and “Mission: Mountain Rescue”.

I bought these because the two authors are excellent. However, the type is even smaller than normal. There is no way I can read the type and still enjoy the books. I’ll be happy to send them, free of charge, to anyone who will actually read them and review them (and not let them die in a TBR pile).  I need a Medical “fix” now and there are no books left I have not already read so I know how it feels. The Medicals are now my favorite line.

If any one wants to read and review these books, please email me. Tell which ones you want, include a snail mail address, and off they go.

           Thanks,

                               Vince

Medicals

Vince, I would definitely be interested in more medicals. I have one of those by Amy Andrews already...the Surgeon's Meant to Be Bride which I very highly recommend! I need to find and check out a USB in my neighborhood and if they have them, clean them out of their early titles and medicals.  My dh checked one on the way home from work but most of them were in losuy condition so I think I we will have to go together.

Thank you!

Paisley

Two words for your review; great AND wow! Thank you so much! I am so glad you couldn't put the book down! Your analysis is wonderful as you've covered everything, not only the romance, but setting, medical drama and how it's integrated into the developing romance.

And yes, I always have fun when I'm writing my books, taking the place of my characters and acting out the situation, the dialogue. It's how they come alive in my head and I hope do so too with my readers.

 Vince,

Thank you so much for your interest in Medical Romance. If you'd like a large-print copy of one of my books, can you please email me?

Here's hoping one day you don't have to rely on UBS to find Medicals, that you'd find them on the shelves along with the rest of the lines!

Thanks everyone who've commented and who've read my books and enjoyed
them. This is what any author lives for, this invaluable feedback! Kiss
