SUSPICION OF GUILT by Tracey V. Bateman (LIS #6)
SYNOPSIS: Someone is determined to stop Denni Mahoney from her dreams of opening more homes. She currently has one home for a small group of women who have aged out of the foster care system. Denni hopes to offer them the support they need, the support they didn't have from a biological family. But someone is opposed to her plans and the actions against Denni and her home are escalating. Detective Reece Corrigan is investigating, but will he lose his heart in the process?
MY THOUGHTS: Tracey V. Bateman shows the value of families, both the damage they can do as well as the redemption that can be found. I like the way she portrays families, stepping outside the traditional roles and recognizing the created families. These created families, such as Denni and her ladies, can offer one another so much support and be a true source of support.
The Biblical aspects were also very hardhitting. Tracey V. Bateman isn't preachy but her love of life and the gift that a child is to the world is very apparent throughout the book. She shows the side that is often forgotten, that even foster kids who were seemingly tossed away by their biological parents are a miracle and loved by God.
I think that being a social worker makes these books a bit too painful to read. I don't have the third sister's (Raven) book and I'm a little leery of reading it. This series is good but the issues are so dark that it's almost like seeing the families I work with flash before my eyes as I read various parts of the books. I do think the author tends towards the more sensational when it comes to portraying social work issues, but I also appreciate the fact that she brings these issues to light.

Hi
I was watching a Bones rerun the other night and it was about a child that was murdered and the foster children taken from the mother. Temperance who is not a people person at all insists on talking with the child. She approaches him with black plastic bags they make you put your things into when they take you or when they move you. The anonymous black plastic bags that label you as being in the system to the kids at the new school. You discover she was put into the system when her parents were killed and it was a very touching and painful episode to watch especially when the child in tears reaches out to hug her.
It is not an easy job you do. In some cases almost heartbreaking. I want to wish you strength and compassion but don't even know how to word it. I understand that reading that 3rd book would be something you are leary of.

Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!
Thanks Jeannie
That episode of Bones is a tough one. The black plastic bags are so true, too. It's sad. I just don't think I can read the next book although I dearly want to know what happens to Raven.... but the subject matter is too tough for me to enjoy the books. And actually, that is a compliment to the author!
And definitely thanks for the compassion and understanding! I appreciate it!!
