Josie crashes Chase's engagement party when she discovers she's pregnant with what she believes is his child. Chase is marrying a childhood friend in a marriage of convenience. Josie is a poor waitress who has no job and no resources. Chase feels sorry for her because he's a nice guy, and also because the man who is/was impersonating him got her pregnant. The relationship progresses from pity to passion. Josie tries to do the right thing but is overwhelmed by Chase's generosity and the need to find the fake Chase.
I was a bit confused about where in Texas this is set. Several large towns were mentioned, but I couldn't quite grasp where the ranch (Clayton Creek) and the town Josie is from (Riverfork) were in relation to those places. I live in Texas so it was important for me to make sense of this.
I really like Kathleen O'Brien's style and found this plot different because of the "fake Chase" who's the real daddy.
