Thanksgiving Traditions

thanksgiving.jpg

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. While my sister does Christmas Eve, I do the Thanksgiving meal. And I do it big. Each year I get one new decoration for the season and after all these years, I now have boxes of Thanksgiving decorations, the way some would have for Christmas.  The house is awash in orange and gold hues, pumpkins, scented candles, colorful table settings and wreaths. The scent of cinnamon and baking turkey fills the air.

There’s something so warm and cozy about that holiday. No pressure, no big fuss.  It’s just the family coming together to have a delicious meal and enjoy being together. We have family traditions. The KIDS, who are all over 20 years now, have their own table. I set a well-decorated card table out in the living room next to our ADULT table. Since there are more of them now with their husbands, fiancés and friends, than the adults, last year I offered them the dining room table to enjoy their meal.  Well, you’d think I was asking for the moon. I got a chorused and resounding, “NO!”  Seems the kids like to keep their tradition of eating at the “Kids” table. That warmed my heart.

We always go outside after the meal to play games, (hey, we live in CA, Thanksgiving is usually warm and sunny). We play ping-pong, Blongo (don’t ask) and various yard games my husband designs. Inside, we play Catch Phrase or Trivia.  We are a competitive bunch, so there are always prizes for the winners.

Dessert is crazy at my house. Last year, we had ten different kinds of goodies from pumpkin pie and chocolate éclairs to cheesecake and pound cake. Pumpkin bars are my daughter’s specialty.  I always roast chestnuts too. Kiss

It’s a long happy fun-filled day and I do it with love in my heart, though I usually need at least one day afterward to recover from the exhaustion.

Since the holidays are upon us and I’m feeling thankful for all the joys in my life, I’d like to share them with you. I’ll be giving away 2 copies to those who comment today in a random drawing for a signed copy of Texan’s Wedding Night Wager, or any of my available backlist. So tell us what’s your favorite holiday and how do you celebrate?  Any special traditions?

Thanksgiving

This is like the third time I am posting first... shows how hectic my life really is... lol! (No, I am just taking advantage that my son is still asleep).

My favorite holiday is Christmas. I am crazy about it, have been buying decorations for months now. I am a Christmas nut!

In my country we do not celebrate Thanksgiving... but 2 of my aunts are married to Americans and I am in the process of marrying another... so it has become a tradition in my family to celebrate Thanksgiving. I also want my son to be familiar with these holidays and his Italian-Panamanian-German-American heritage.

People always find something to criticize and when you tell them you are going to have a Thanksgiving dinner, they say "Oh, but that is an American thing, you are NOT an American". And I say "What is so terrible about being thankful to God for all the great things He does for you, like breathing for starters?".

Anyway, we always have turkey and pumpkin pie. The rest changes with the years. One year we had 5 different kinds of pie! Yum! The other tradition is that we stand in circle, say a prayer and ask for blessings to all those who came and those who can no longer be with us. Then, each one says what we are thankful for out loud and make a toast.

XOXO

Christmas is my favorite holiday.

We open gifts at my Mom's house on Christmas Eve and then everyone can be at their own house on Christmas day so the kids can have Santa visit.

Thanksgiving this year will probably be just me and my mom and we will have ham and sweet potatoes and not sure what else.  I will spend the weekend with her and just enjoy being there.  Usually that weekend we put up the Christmas tree and then take it down on Chritsmas afternoon or not too many days later.

Elaine

Hi Caira

Good morning.  I "get" how you're able to visit with all of us BEFORE the little guy wakes up!  I remember those days!  After they do ... it's all about them and taking care of their needs.  I think it's lovely that you celebrate Thanksgiving, just to be able to Give Thanks for all good things in your life.  Congratulations on your upcoming marriage too.  Thanks for stopping by today to share your traditions.  I love Christmas too, but it's not as much fun as when my children were little and there were toys under the tree to light up their faces. Now, that's priceless. Enjoy!!

Holidays

I love Thanksgiving because it has somehow avoided much of the commercialism of other holidays, but Christmas will probably always be my favorite.  I do dinner at my house for both, and we really embrace our traditions.  My DD makes pumpkin pie.  It's her signature dish.  These days I have to have vegetarian tofurkey as well as regular turkey and fixings so that she can eat it, but we all enjoy a frozen cranberry dish that looks as pretty as it tastes.  I also love pumpkin pecan pie when I have time to fix it, pumpkin cheesecake, and pumpkin roll cake.  (Needless to say, we alternate which of those we have on any given occasion.)  We also make a gelled dish (with vegetarian gelatin) that is a variation of my DH's mother's recipe.

I also love a plastic canvas turkey set with a pilgrim boy and girl that my DFIL made several years ago as well as a pumpkin serving dish and several other decorations, probably not as extensive as yours.  This year, because my DF is in a nursing home, the holidays will be a bit more difficult to pull together, but we'll have them just the same because they comfort us.

P.S. -- Are those your dog and cat in the picture?  If so, how on earth did you get that pose?  We have a picture of our motley crew in Christmas garb here.

Hi JV

I loved your pet pictures!!  KissOh my goodness, you dressed them up so cute! How did they allow that?

I have a black and white cat,  who sort of looks like your Carter and one that's gray calico that looks like Meijer!!  Mine are Skittles and Snickers, respectively.   No dogs for me. So to answer your question, no that pic is one I found online and loved it!  Some poor dog and cat posed for that!!

Your family traditons sound like fun too!  Enjoy and thanks for visiting me today!!

Favorite Holiday

Thats a really hard decision I am gonna have to go with Christmas though. It was really tough to decided between it and Thanksgiving. I have always loved them both so much. Honestly I think Thanksgiving use to be until I got married. Then the joys of watching Daria's face on Christmas morning is priceless. She is my world.

We have to set a different schedule every year because we have Daria on all Holidays one year and don't have her on the Holidays the next year. We always have her on the Eve of the holiday though if we aren't going to have her on the holiday.

I always start my Christmas shopping really early normally September but this year I started it in Aug and I have been about done for months I just can't find the right gift for my nephew anyway. We decorate our tree the day of Thanksgiving after the meal is over. Later on that night we go ahead and take Daria to look at the Christmas lights in Gatlinburg. They are beautiful and they turn them on this time every year. We of course always attend the Church's Christmas play. Our church doesn't actually do the Christmas Service on Christmas unless it falls on Wed or Sun. I dunno why they just don't. There are several more things we do around Christmas but I will wait until next month to tell you all. I am so ready to start decorating I wish Thanksgiving would hurry up and get here, so I can decorate. lol

Jessiecue

Hi Jessicue

Oh tell me you just didn't say you have all your Christmas shopping done!  My goodness, I thought I was good, with having a few little gifts ready!  You are amazing!   Enjoy your holiday with Daria.  Little ones make the holidays so much more meaningful.  Thanks for visiting me today and sharing your holiday tradtions!

Christmas

Christmas is my favorite holiday. Around here we open the gifts on  Christmas Eve, in the evening. The tree has been decorated during the day at Christmas Eve and the tree is from our own forest. And of course we watch on tv the declaration of Christmas peace -it's a very old tradition. And we eat some tradtional Finnish Christmas foods, of course.

Happy Thanksgiving in advance . . .

Charlene, I love celebrations, and I especially love food. Tongue out For Thanksgiving I'm hoping mom cooks her famous deep fried turkey (so very soft and tender) and my sister brings over her sinful brownie cheesecake. I usually bring the grilled veggies (with a bit of olive oil and lemon pepper) and we all have a great time. I really wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Red

Oh, my son brought over his deep turkey fryer and we had it that way two years in a row.  I love the way it tastes ... so different. We'd made it both way and every one had a taste from the usual oven baked to the fried one!  The deep fryer died a horrible death when Jason moved, so we can't have the fun fried way this year.  Mmmm, your sister's brownie cake sound yummy!

Holidays

Well my favorite holiday is Halloween and since we are past that I'll talk about Thanksgiving. Every year we have a big get together at my sisters, she has the most room so we all gather there. We have the usual turkey and fixings and my mother always makes a roast with onions, potatoes and carrots since I don't like turkey. I've tried to tell her I can eat veggies, but she insists on making the roast. We have all kinds of pies and I usually eat way to much and bring some home with me too. I love pumpkin pie so I usually bring home a whole pie for later. We have a couple of unusual Thanksgiving items we eat and those are deviled eggs and potato salad. I know you usually think of summer for these items, but my mother insists we have to have them for my brother. Are we spoiled or what ?

Holidays

I really like all holidays for different reasons.  My favorite though is Christmas.  We decorate the house.  Have a big tree and I love Christmas music.  On Christmas morning we open our stockings then eat the overnight breakfast casserole we fixed the night before and is now baking in the oven!  Then we open our presents under the tree.  (very slowly really taking time to appreciate each gift)

JV - I loved the pictures of your pets.  They are so adorable

Charlene,

As you might have been able to tell from the expression on his face, Meijer was none too thrilled with the Grinch hat on, but I thought he looked adorable!  And I loved our dog in the Mrs. Santa outfit, too!  Our cats are so funny when we dress them up.  For a while afterwards, they just freeze or flop over, as if they're paralyzed.  Eventually, they get beyond that, though.

Minna, whenever I hear someone say she opens presents on Christmas Eve, I immediately hear Kevin Costner's voice giving the "I Believe" speech from "Bull Durham" (a great movie, BTW) where he emphatically says that, among other things, he believes in opening presents on Christmas morning NOT Christmas Eve.  You can find it on YouTube if you've never seen the movie.  It's a great movie moment.

Holidays

I know Christmas gets the overwhelming vote for fav holiday, but mine is actually New Year's. We always have a big party, with a dinner buffet & dessert & fireworks & games & champagne & noisemakers & hats...the works. The boys are old enough now to set off the fireworks, & we start at 10pm. Yes, we are the obnoxious neighbors making all the noise at midnight. --Sorry!  And the next day, I like to take down the Christmas tree & all the decorations. It's a new year, a new beginning -- I like to start it out clean & fresh.

Thanksgiving Is Mine

I like thanksgiving best. Its just cooking and family and not a bunch of hectic running around trying to find gifts that are going to get returned the next day. Its just the people I love the most sitting around a table enjoying good food.

Christmas is my

Christmas is my favorite - I love getting together with family, and love the joy of the children.

But, i think if we celebrated Thanksgiving here I could get into that too! Love the sound of it at your place.

Hi Tappitytaptap

Can I come to your New Year's Eve party?  Kiss

Really, it sounds like a great way to end the year and start up the new one.  If we do anything we have a few friends over and play a game and toast in the New Year at midnight.  But it's very low key and after all the Christmas hoopla, it works for us.   Your way sounds like a lotta fun!

Christmas

Christmas is my favorite holiday.  I enjoy getting together with family for a traditional Christmas dinner - homemade raviolis, turkey, fresh bread.  Then we all take a break to clean up the dinner mess & then proceed to dessert.  Our traditional dessert is an icebox cake - chocolate pudding, vanilla pudding, crushed walnuts, fruit cocktail mix layered in a graham cracker crust.

Holiday

My favorite holiday is Christmas. Love all the music, decorations and cheer of the season.  My second favorite is Thanksgiving. Love sharing a meal with family. Lots of good food and great conversation.

Hi Pat

Yes, it's all about family, isn't it?  As we grow older, we (meaning my hubby and me) are so thankful for our children and extended family.

Hi CrystalGB

Oh, yeah, the holiday music. That does tend to get me in the mood.  It's finally getting a little bit cooler here in CA.  I think it's 70.  It's hard to feel the spirit of Christmas until it gets a little colder, but that's not always happening here.  We improvise ... Kiss

Christmas

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday in my family. We've been doing things the same since the 4 of us kids were little, even now in our 20s. My mom goes all out decorating, she has a love of snowmen that is insane and our house is definitely snowman-centric. The tree (fake) goes up the beginning of December and is left up until my birthday January 6th. I spend most of December doing endless amounts of baking to be given as gifts and kept, believe me when I say it's a lot of baking. On Christmas Eve we open one gift, pj's-always, and watch a movie. As kids it was always Nightmare Before Christmas, now it changes to whatevers on tv and sometime's there's margaritas if my sister and her hubby are up for the holidays Laughing. Christmas morning nothing happens until coffee's made, and we still manage to get up super early. We have the same breakfast every year after opening gifts-corn flakes french toast and then a big dinner that night. Up again early the next day for boxing day shopping. I just love the tradition of it all, even if we're all older and sometimes not all together for Christmas. As much as I can't wait to start my own traditions, I'll miss this the times I'm not home for the holidays.

When I have a little money I buy books. If any is left I buy food and clothes. -Erasmus

Hi Charlene

OF COURSE you can come to my New Year's Eve Party!

Can I come to your Thanksgiving? Sounds like more fun than what we do: cook, eat, clean, read the paper & map out our Black Friday strategy. Oh, and watch football & snooze...

I love hosting New Year's Eve

I love hosting New Year's Eve but I think Christmas is our turn this year so I'll be doing that instead. I generally find the whole Christmas thing so much more stressful these days. Don't know when I developed my 'bah humbug' gene, but I'd be happy to leave the country at Christmas nowadays!

Charlene, your Thanksgiving sounds like a wonderful time. I think I need to infuse some of your joy into my Christmas! LOL!

Christmas for me!

In the past we visited both parents and lots of siblings.  When 2 parents were gone, we would fly to my sister's place for 2.5 weeks, usually taking my mom.  Now no money so stay home.

Latest routine:  At home in the morning.  Open all presents slowly.  Take and make lots of sibling/friends phone calls.  Lunch at noon.  Turkey put in oven at 1 pm.  Walk out door at 1:01 pm.  Visit 2-3 BIL and families plus MIL.  Home by 4:45.  Prepare/cook rest of supper.  Eat by 5:30.  Moan and groan about eating too much.  Watch TV/play on computer.  Go to bed.

That's it!

that sounds so much

that sounds so much fun

we just watch tva nd football

we love xmas we at home togheter opening gifts

please enter me thanksCool
