tornados, hail, and camping

Many of you know I moved from California to Minnesota almost two years ago.  It has been quite a change of pace, living in a much colder climate.  But what I wasn't expecting so much, is that the sping and summer storms can get very wild.

Dh and I bought a new to us camping trailer, just last week.  And then my in-laws came to stay with us for the long weekend.  We all decided on Sunday to take the trailer out for a day trip.  That way we could sort of get a feel for it, and see how our truck handled towing it for some distance.  We had a blast, enjoyed our picnic next to the St. Croix river, and then heard the tornado sirens.  Did I mention in-laws live in California???

We packed up quickly and headed to the shelter at the State Park we were at.  Very strange to be with so many people who are frightened.  We waited out the storm for a few hours, saw the largest hail any of us had ever seen, and listened to the radios.  The radio kept mentioning my town, and how it was getting thrashed.  But not as bad as a town 7 miles south of mine.  Thats where the tornado actually touched down.

Finally we were able to head out to our truck and trailer, and aside from hail damage, everything was in working order, thankfully.  We all got in the truck, and headed home.  On the outside, our house was fine, I was sooo happy!!  We unloaded, and headed in.  I sent my son to check on our animals.  He headed downstairs to the basement, where he proceeded to yell up the stairs, "The basement is flooded!"

Need I say more??

I am very thankful my basement only flooded, and I feel very lucky.  Some folks were not so fortunate that day.

We are going camping tomorrow to get away.  And crossing our fingers the storms stay awayUndecided

OMG

how scary not knowing what you'll find. Glad your ok

Weird weather

We live in Arizona and this Memorial Day weekend my sister and her family went camping and they had at least 14 inches of snow. I've lived in Arizona most of my life and this is the first time we've had snow this late up in the mountains. Usually we are up in the 100's already, but we had only a couple of 110's.

O.M.G! I'm glad you came

O.M.G!Surprised I'm glad you came through alright.

Wow....

Are you a writer too, by any chance?  You can certainly store up this experience to fictionalize into a storyline.  I know I would.  Some of the best scenes come from a bit of author experience.

I'm glad you and your family are okay.  It must've been very scary! Surprised  I think I'd be tempted to move back to Sunny California - LOL!  Wink

Hey Everyone!

Hey Christa!

It was pretty scary...perhaps I will be better prepared next time??  Thank you!Smile

Hey Mlacroix!

I can't believe there was that much snow!!Surprised  Especially since Arizona is known for their heat.  So when your sister and her family went camping, had they packed clothes for snow?

I agree, weather has been weird.  There was that Colorado tornado as well that surprised me.

Hey FF!

Thank you!! Me too!!

Hey Amanda!

Heehee, nope, not a writer.  But you are welcome to use it! Smile

Thank you!  It was scary, especially being our first really big storm, with the sirens blaring, and tornados actually touching down.

Lol, I can see us moving back to California in the far future, but DH's job is here...hence the move in the first place. Undecided

I went through

tornado warnings....

In 1983, a friend and I were driving from Los Angeles to New York.....along the way, we stopped in Battle Creek Michigan to visit some reatives of my friend.

The 3 days we were there, it was 113 degrees and humid as hell.  We were all laying around with cool rangs on our foreheads complaining about the heat.  I took a shower and never dried off.

One night, we were sitting watching tv, when a storm picked up. there was thunder, wind and lighning and hail.

At the bottom right of the tv screen, there was a big W. And the color of the W tells you how bad the storm is.

Well it told us how bad it was...we looked out side and we could see three twisters dancing up in the sky.

The wind got really bad and the power went out.  We were on our way to the basement, when the storm stopped as suddenly as it had started.

Thank goodness they never touched down....it was pretty scary.

Years later my boss came in and said "I saw Twister", and I said "I lived Twister".

Now, I live in California....land of earth quakes, floods, and mudslides, but I was never so scared as I was with just a tornado watch.   i dont know what I would have done if any of them actually touchd down.

OMG Tammy, What a scary

OMG Tammy, What a scary experience to have to go through! Thank god you are all alright!  Were your pets all ok in the basement? Was your basement finished and anything ruined? Hopefully you are insured for floods?  I hope the losses/damages were very minimal for you.

Oh my, i'd be wanting to move back where you came from as well. But then California is prone to earthquakes, so i'm not sure where i'd feel safer.  Probably California, since where you are now has tornado alarms Surprised, which means they must be prone to getting those. Surprised Oh my gosh, scary.

Again, so relieved to hear you are all alright.

Kathy D

i have a friend....

in Oregon, who used to nag me about getting out of California....She would say "you're going to die in an earthquake!

I would say, So I could could move to Florida and die in a Huricane.  It doesnt matter.

I the past few years the rest of the country has had more tornado's, hurricanes, and blizzards, than we have had earthquakes.

Terri
Got Books?

Hey Terri and Kathy!!

Hey Terri!

Wow!  That sounds super humid.  We do get really humid here, but not as bad, and the temperatures don't get nearly as high either.  I have vacationed in New Hampshire before, where the humidity made me feel similar to what you described.  Where showers didn't make you feel clean, because you remain sticky.Undecided

Where we were picnicking the other day, we didn't have television, and our phones were not able to pick up cell service for weather updates.  If we had been able to see the weather, we would have left, and headed home about two hours prior to the sirens going off.  But there were many other people there, so we weren't worried.  And when the siren blared, the skies still looked ok.

I agree, thank goodness it never touched down.  Did the sky look greenish??  When we were getting into the shelter, the sky was a greenish.  I had heard of it before, but it was a first time for me seeing it.

Heehee, is Twister the one where they chased the tornados??  I could never do that, way too scary.

California is where I grew up.  Lived there my whole life until about 2 yrs ago.  I experienced earthquakes, never any big ones.  No floods, no mudslides.  But I was there for a huge wildfire.  The news out here was saying there are fires out there currently now??

Hey Kathy D!!

The pets were all ok.  We had the dogs in a back shop, behind the basement, but it is slightly higher than the basement. I am sure they were a bit frightened, because it had to be quite noisy while we were gone.  All the other animals were upsatirs.

Our basement is/was finished.  But we had make an insurance claim.  They came through a ripped up the flooring in my laundry room, and my bathroom down there.  Ripped my downstairs kitchen cabinets out, and the bathroom cabinets.  We do have a cap on what we can claim, for this situation.  So we may have some out-of-pocket expenses, but should still be able to get it back together within our budget.  I was just really worried about mold growing in the walls, etc.

Yep, we have the alarms, we do get the tornados, but not nearly as much as the states south of us.  Which is why we moved where we did, hoping to avoid them as much as possible.

Thank you, Kathy...I am glad too!Smile

Hey Terri!

Hey Terri!

I almost missed your second post, I was replying to the other one.  Smile

Very true, and didn't Oregon just get a storm a while back that was pretty strong along its coast??  Or was that Washington?  I figure you get something no matter where you live.  Earthquakes, they come suddenly, with no warning really.  So you don't have the fear of it happening, while you hide from it.  Tornados and hurricanes, you do get some warning, and then you have to wait it out, wondering if it will hit where.  Not sure which I prefer???Undecided

Weird weather

Actually my sister and her family weren't prepared for the snow. They were camping with friends and only had a tent. The way my brother-in-law told it, my sister got up in the middle of the night and went to their friends camper, dumping him onto the floor of the tent. Their teenage son curled up with the dog and two sleeping bags.

Hi Tammy

How scary! I'm so sorry to hear about your basement. I hope that you can get the work done quickly and without a hassle. Thank God that you were all okay. That is just too scary. My cousin lived in Texas for a while then in Florida. She had tornado and hurricane scares. I was like, get back home. What are you doing over there!

I've had a recurring dream (maybe 5 time) of three tornados coming at me while I am on this long drive. I have no idea what to do so I pull over and I get into the ditch! It always ended there and was alway three tornados and the same long stretch of road. Really scary.

I've lived in California all my life. My little town was actually called the earthquake capital of the world at one time. Maybe still is but I'm not sure. That is because there are always tremors but you just can't feel them. The worst quake was the Loma Prieta quake in 89. It was centered about 30 miles away from here and was so hard. Living on the outskirts of my town made it feel like our little block of houses were the only people living on earth. No electricity so it was so dark at night. No phone service. No noise for days. The grocery store was filled with people all grabbing at whatever we could get. I was looking for simple things to bar-b-que, water, anything. It was like being in a movie or something. Any little after shock caused so much anxiety.

I was actually getting off work and had just locked up the office. I had opened my car door and was getting in when I felt dizzy. I thought I had fallen into the car with a dizzy spell. Then I realized what was happening and I was just bouncing in my parked car. There was no way I could get out and I was looking up at the office sign and praying it wouldn't fall on me as I was right under it. Then I turned and saw all the telephone poles behind me swaying and bouncing and the gas station was next door to me. The attendant was trying to run and he was running towards the street but he was headed towards the telephone poles. Very scary. He was being tossed around and he was jumping like he was on a trampeline. It was horrible. I drove staight home when it stopped.

But I would never move as I am even more scared of tornados and hurricanes. I guess because those seem to happen all the time. I know I would just panic in a tornado.

There were fires in the Santa Cruz mountains and it was bad but no lives were lost and they stopped it before it could do as much damage as they thought it would. So that is good. Lots of people did lose homes and animals but no human lives lost.

Margie :)

Where did you live in California?

I live in Los Angeles....we havent had any sizable quakes since about 1994.  It happened in an area called Northridge.

A couple of weeks ago (early May?) i was chatting with my Oregon friend (lives out side of Salem), and it was snowing where she was. And it was cool and over cast here.

I think it was some kind of wierd storm going on along the pacific coast.

Lucky I dont know anybody in the ravaged areas around here.

How ever, I do know people who were on vacation in Thailand when the tsunami happened.   Lucky they made it out alive, minus all their things.

Hey Margie!

Hey Margie!

Thanks Margie, the adjuster who came out to look at our basement seemed really nice.  He said he was going to try and get us as much money as possible.  And also gave me some tips on how to deal with insurance in the future.

It was super scary!!  We went away again this weekend, for two nights.  While we were gone there was another tornado warning in our hometown, with funnel clouds, but no touch downs.  Last year wasn't like this.  It's getting me a bit nervous, actually.

Does your friend still live in Florida??  Florida does seem scary to me, with the hurricanes.  The really seem to blast large areas, with no hesitation.

OMGosh!!  What horrible dreams!! Surprised Although a ditch is a good place to goto.  When tornado warnings are sounded here, they always say the car is the worst place to be, and if you can, to pull over and get in a ditch.  They prefer you in basement, but that is not always possible.

The earthquake you describe seems like it was more shake than any I ever experienced.  I don't think I have been outside during one.  And none of them have ever been enough to topple bookshelves or anything more than perhaps a picture frame.  When you say he was jumping like a trampoline, it totally reminds me of what I have seen in movies.  VERY scary!! I would have driven straight home too!!  So how long was your power out?

It was a huge decision to move out here to Minnesota.  Really Huge!!  But, honestly, I didn't take tornados into account as much as the cold bitter winters.  I was told that as long as we moved North of the Twin cities, it wasn't as likely to occur.  And I believed them, and they were right as far as last Spring went.  But this Spring has certainly given us a run.

If I didn't have my kids with me, I think I would panic in a tornado situation.  But I really can't.  Because they look to me for reassurance, and if I am panicing outwardly, then they are going to panic.  Plus, last week, my in-laws were with me, and I had to keep my MIL calm as well.  But really, if it was just me and dh, or just me, and I didn't have anybody to keep safe, and keep me busy, I think panic would over rule.  Know what I mean??

Good to hear no human lives were lost in the fires there.  How are your temperatures out there now?  I am heading out to San Diego area on the 20th to visit my family.

Hi

Terri, I live in Hollister. It is about 50 miles south of San Jose and about 40 miles east of Monterey. I remember seeing footage of the Northridge quake. That was really bad. How scary for your friends. I rememer watching that and hearing stories from the survivors. Amazing what some people went through.

That is one of my worst fears. Death by water. I think it comes from when I was a child. My family would drive to the next town on Saturdays and we would go to my moms sisters. They had a ranch and we would get together there at least twice a month. BBQ and all that. But what I think caused my fear is that the road from my town to theirs is this curvy two land road, where there have been many deaths due to people passing. Anyway, the land on one side is prone to flooding, which hasn't happened since I was a kid, and I remember these images in my mind of a huge body of water. My dad would drive fast and I was so afraid that we were going to end up in the water. Then after the party, when he was drunk and it was dark, we would drive home on this road. I think that is why I have never been a beach person or even learned to swim!

Kathy, Nothing will stop me from going to Disneyland! Really, even though that quake was very bad, that is the worst I have ever been through. Usually, even with a strong quake, the gound moves and there many be some broken glasses but then it is over.

Tammy, I'm so glad you got a nice adjuster. Sometimes those people act like it is there own money. He sounds very nice. I don't blame you for trying to get away. And how scary to hear that there were more warnings in your area. My cousin just moved back to California from Florida. I think that she was more afraid of the Texas tornados. That was the first time I have been outside during one that was so big and so long. And now that you mention it, you are right that it was like in the Earthquake movie. That is what it looked like. Our power was out for about one week. Our water was out for about that long too.

I am so glad to know that I did the right thing in my dreams! I wonder if I heard that somewhere? I just remember thinking in my dream that the tornados were going to pick up my car and I had to get out of it. But there was no buildings just big flat fields of produce and the ditch.

I did have one other very scary dream about a tornado. This was about two years ago. I was in a living room with my mom, dad, sister, and maybe two other people. It was pitch dark outside and we had the curtains open. We had the t.v. on and suddenly a tornado warning came on. I went up to the window and tried to see but it was so dark. Then I finally focused on a barn in the distance. That was when I noticed that all that darkness behind the barn was a huge tornado and it was headed right at us. No question it was going to take out the house. I think yelled, Get Down! and the thing hit like a train. Then there was total silence. I was lying on the floor and could not hear a thing. Then I got up and I saw my mom, dad and sister at the other end of the room but it was like a hall in a hospital where they were standing. It was like either I was dead or they were dead. Then I woke up. I have to find out what tornado dreams mean. I guess a lot of anxiety or something. This is the sixth tornado dream I have had in the last 15 years.

I totally understand how a mom just has to keep her cool. It is amazing what we can do when we know that we must stay calm. Can you imagine how your kids would have been if you had freaked? Not good.

I hope you have a great time with your family. Temps here are 70 right now and going up mid week. But San Diego is always so much warmer then here. Have fun!

Margie :)

Tammy - In general I think

Tammy - In general I think most houses here don't have basements. Basements would make sense. Some people have storm cellars in the yard. Not many though.

Just watching the devastation and aftermath of the tornadoes week after week on TV. I'm glad and I'm sure others here are too that it seems to be over. We had a short windstorm that took branches and some power lines down, but nothing like the tornadoes coming through.

Hey Margie!

Hey Margie!

My family and I used to LOVE camping at Pismo beach in the summer.  That's pretty close to Monterey isn't it?  Beautiful area up there.

Thanks Margie, I am glad he (the adjustor) was super nice as well, cause I was nervous prior to his arrival.  I have heard plenty of horror stories, you know?

The longest we have ever been out of power was from a Friday night to a Sunday night.  And, boy, did I feel like a wimp.  No computer, no lights, etc.  And that was only two days!!  What did you guys do for food when it was out for a week?  Did you have a generator?

I wonder if you heard somewhere about ditches too??  Weird the directions our dreams take sometimes.  One night dh and I both had the same type of dream.  It was right after we moved out here, in a new house.  We both dreamed of finding a secret room in the house.  Mine was off our master bedroom, his was downstairs, off his office.  It was just so funny to wake up, and start telling him of my dream, and he had such a similar one!

Let me know if you find out anything about what those dreams mean.  I am sure it may have something to do with anxiety, or maybe in the last dream you described something to do with losing your family members, since they were so far from you, down the hall after the tornado went through.

I can imagine how the kids would have been if I freaked.  Only because there were a few parents there who were yelling and screaming.....their kids were crying uncontrollably.  After being with other people like that in a frightening situation, I think I would prefer for it just to be my family.  My son said, the other people were kind of freaking him out.  And if it had just been us, he would have been fine, and just waited out the storm, playing his electronic hand-held games.

Thanks, Margie!!  I am certain we will have fun!!  Disneyland is the Best!!

Hi Tammy

Actually, Pismo Beach is still a ways from here. Maybe about a three hour drive from where I am. Maybe 2 from Monterey. I have a few friends that like to take mini vacations in PB. I've driven through that way and it is so nice. Just a lot of quiet little towns. The beach towns are really nice.

We didn't have lights for almost a week. We had to take cold showers so thank goodness it was in October. October is one of our warmest months around here. So we still had an Indian Summer. I was dying for news but we didn't have a battery radio and I couldn't find one to buy. We did not know what was going on in a lot of places around here. Didn't know about that horrible bridge collap in SF.

I think that is so weird about you and hubby's dream being so similar. I would be looking for secret compartments if I were you. That is just too weird!

OH, Tammy, you are going to Disneyland. I love Disneyland. Have fun!

Margie :)

Hi Terri

Wow, How very scary for your friends. I do believe that I did read about them. I recently saw a documentary on the tsumani and they showed video of the water that practically disappeared from the ocean. You could see the ocean floor and people are just in awe and walking in it. I was just thinking, run! What are you doing just standing there? It has to come back. But I guess they are just in shock.
So many are just lucky to be alive. I saw Nate the interior designer on Oprah talking about is experience there and how his partner didn't make it. That was so sad.

Margie :)

Yikes!

Tammy!!!!  How frightening!!!  I'm just glad to know you guys were all safe!  I certainly hope the insurance covers most of it as that sounds like a nightmare to me....

I think natural disasters are all a matter of perspective and what you are used to.  Don't get me wrong, living in Florida with hurricanes (and yes, I live in the central part where all those hurricanes raced right through back in 2004) is not a great thing... but you get plenty of warning.  Earthquakes and tornadoes terrify me because there isn't that same amount of warning.  I think hurricanes would terrify me more if I lived near the coast... in Tampa, there are signs up that show you just how high the potential flooding could be and wow, THAT would terrify me as they'd all drown! Surprised  But here in the central part... well, we were always considered the evacuation place but like I said, at least we have PLENTY of warning.  Regardless, I'm dreading this hurricane season (which started the 1st and yes, there has already been an A storm, just nowhere near the US) because of all the freaky weather everywhere else.

More Tsunami

There was some kind of program about the tsunami on National Geographic channel, where you would probably have seen litle bits about Faye and Gene's experience.

My friend in Oregon lives on the coast, where they have been under tsunami watch for years.

Years ago, in the (1960's?) there was a big earth quake in Alaska that triggerd a tsunami  that hit Washing, Oregon and Northern California.

Hey Margie!

That is a beautiful area out there.  I agree.  The beach towns are so cute.  Dh and I actually looked to buy out there at one point.  But the jobs weren't where we could afford decent sized homes.  And since he is a techy guy, we needed to be closer to major cities.

What a long time to be without power!  That is one of the things I missed most when we were out of power for our short time, information.  Lack of knowing what is going on, lack of internet, news, etc.  So I bet you were quite shocked when the power came back on, and you saw the news of all the happened while you were blacked out, eh??

Heehee, dh did look over the floor plans of our home, after our dreams.  He actually took a tape measure throughout the house, and sketched up his own plans.  No secret room to be found.Undecided

Yep, the insurance is giving us the max allowed for the flooding, so we should be able to get everything back to the way it was, and perhaps a little better in parts.  Especially if we do it ourselves, which dh and I are leaning towards.

I remember seeing the news on those hurricanes in 2004....very scary!

Wow, that is really interesting, I hadn't realized they put up signs letting you know about how high the water could get from flooding.  I have a feeling seeing those signs would give me an eerie feeling.

Weather has been quite strange everywhere, makes me wonder what is yet to come??  Or perhaps everything will calm down??  Or is that hoping too much?Undecided
