Unforgiven by Lindsay McKenna (Silhouette Nocturne #1, 2006)

First in the Warriors for the Light series.

I am not a big Lindsay McKenna fan; she’s one whose books I can take or leave, generally speaking. This one, however, is one of the worst she’s ever had published. I expected more from an author with as many published works under her belt. This book is filled with exposition, mostly in the form of long, boring soliloquies from the characters, which are then repeated by one of the other characters, almost verbatim. The conflict between the two main characters is resolved instantly and before they even know one another, and from then on out, they are both in complete accord with one another. Not to mention that the characters (including the main ones) have the emotional depth of dried up mud puddles. I could go on and on about the many flaws with this book, but I won’t because I know there are people out there who might actually enjoy this book. More power to you. But this is one I’ll be weeding from my collection, and I won’t recommend it to anyone.

My rating: 1/5
(In my view, any author who has written a novel-length manuscript and had it published by a reputable house deserves at least one star.)

From the back cover:
“A dark mistress became his destiny…

“Plucked from the depths of hell, former military sniper Reno Manchahi was hired by the government to kill a thief, but he had a mission of his own. Descended from a family of shape-shifters, Reno vowed to get the revenge he’d thirsted for all these years. But his assignment went awry when his target turned out to be a powerful seductress, a woman who ricked everything to fight a potent evil.

“They had a combustible connection, yet he struggled to reveal the truth about himself—his Apache upbringing, his Jaguar pride, his death plot. Soon, Reno had to transform himself into a true hero, accept this new love and conquer the enemy that threatened them all. He had become a Warrior for the Light…”

Lindsey McKenna

She's not one of my faves either.  I agree that this one wasn't very good; I think I rated it a 3 because I liked some of the concept and it started off decent (going on my memory here as it's been awhile) but then it went off into those long metaphysical ramblings.  Ugh.

Agree

Like you, I loved the premise, but hated the metaphysical rants. This one had so much potential, but Ms. McKenna just blew it.
