Unleash the Night

In her world view there are human/animals  and animal/humans as a result of the actions of a king to save his children from death at age 27. The have magical abilities and can shift forms. At puberty the ability to shift appears  and Arcadians can become animals and animals can become human. There is a distinct rivalry between these two groups and there have been many killings between them.  Wren is a real mix of Tiger and snow leapard and can actually shift between three forms. But he feels he is a deformed crature of no value because his mother hated him and he thought his father did too and they were both killed when he was young.  He lives in a place called Sanctuary where he is tolerated. Although the owner of great wealth he does busboy duty at the bar and keeps to himself.  Maggie is the daughter of a Senator looking for her place in the world and the strength to break free from her father's control. When her friend Nick disappears and is presumed dead she goes to Sanctuary his favorite hang out and meets Wren another of Nick's friends.they don't know why they feel a connection but Wren acts out of character and saves her life.  As they explore their connection he keeps his animal secrets from her, until he is forced to tell her when the ruling council believes some lies about him and gives him a death sentence.

    I really enjoyed this book. Between the shape shifting, time travel and getting the bad guys the magic is not over and Maggie has a few surprises in store for herself. These books are not just set in modern times but keep the mythology gods real  and the whole pantheon including the Fates take active roles.
