Nancy (sheandeen), you have won a free book! Send me your address via the contact form on my website www.karensandler.net.
I believe I have mentioned my horse, Belle, maybe once or twice in previous blogs. She is, as I like to describe her, The Most Beautiful Horse in the World. She really is lovely, a gray Andalusian/Morgan cross with a mane that’s about 30 inches long. That’s her in the picture.
When I mention to people that I have a horse, their response is usually polite interest. When I tell them that I mainly do dressage with her, nine times out of ten they go glassy-eyed. They have no clue what I’m talking about. I’m going to venture a guess that as well read as all of you are, at least a few of you won’t know what dressage is either.
I always have a little trouble explaining it. I like to call it horsie ballet or equine gymnastics. It’s that fancy stuff you see in the Olympics or at the Lipizzan shows. Horses trot in place or pirouette at the canter. Their necks are beautifully curved in an arch and their noses are nicely tucked in (but not tucked in too far).
The problem with dressage is that although for the person doing it, it’s an endless challenge and striving toward perfection, for a non-dressage person watching, it can be a little...well...dull. The husband of the owner of my barn has a T-shirt that reads, “The man who said that life is too short never watched dressage.” One time there was a dressage competition at my barn and my hubby and son came along to watch. Both of them fell asleep. Right in front of me.
So, do you have (or have had) an interesting, unusual hobby that always requires a great deal of explanation? Something that often elicits the response, “You do what?” I’d like to hear about it. If nothing else so I don’t feel like I’m the only odd one in the bunch. On Thursday I’ll give a free book to someone who comments. And I promise I won’t make you watch me do dressage.

You do what?
I usually get that response when I tell folks I write romance.
And then of course they want to know where they can buy my book. Well... er... I haven't sold a book yet, and that just elicits more questions.
You have a beautiful horse. And I knew what dressage was. I was fortunate enough to see the Lippizan stallions perform at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. What an amazing show!

I too know about Dressage...
My mom has always been a big fan of the Lippizan Stallions and the shows. I love horses, but I cannot get anywhere near them so my exposure has to be via books or television.
One of my favourite Mary Stewart romances ~ Airs Above the Ground ~ deals with a Lippizan stallion that had disappeared years before, stolen by his groom. That story really piqued my imagination.
As to odd hobbies; well I collect things. Some of my biggest collections are my rocks (and I've been collecting them since I was wee ... well, younger anyway) and my many, many binders of anime trading cards: Sailor Moon, Fushigi Yuugi and many, many other anime series.
A lot of people have looked at me with that "Huh?" look on their faces. Sometimes it's the parents of kids that used to collect ~ and they're wondering why a 'grown up' would collect kids' cards. Others have no idea what anime or manga (Japanese animation / comics) are... and it can be an interesting ~ and embarrassing? ~ explanation.
Oh well, I used to collect bread bag tags, so I figure rocks and cards are a few steps up! LOL

I Know
I too know what dressage is and I think it is/can be a very beautiful thing. While I have never see the Lippizan Stallions perform in person I have seen them on film and am fascinated by them.
I guess the only strange thing I do is collect frog figurines, a habit that started while I was in college and I am trying to slow down on the collecting because I am running out of room to display them.

Dressage
I vaguely knew what dressage was, but your explanation made me go ah ha! Once in my teens I got to see the Lippizan stallions. Dad took me, and was bored out of his mind, but knew how much I wanted to see them. They were amazing.
Have you read Mountain's Call by Caitlin Brennan? Its a Luna, but the 'heros' of the story are a select group of stallions and their riders - and while the author never calls it that, my recollection of it now is that the horses are doing dressage. I remember picturing the Lippizan stallions while i was reading it.
My only hobby is my books - which may not seem strange on this site, but I get strange looks from people when they see my catalogue and who ask why I don't get rid of a book after its read. (I keep almost 100% of what I buy!)

My parents took us to see a Lipizzan show when I was very young--it was amazing to watch these large bodied animals doing what looked like ballet. I love watching dressage during the Olympics, so count me as another person who has heard of it before. Your horse is gorgeous, btw!
As far as unusual hobbies are concerned, does international folk dancing count, or contradancing? Most people that hear me mention it get that glassy-eyed look when I start explaining.
I also go to a lot of folk music concerts, fiddle and bagpiping events. LOL

My unusual Hobby
First...I know what dressage is!
I used to watch it all the time.
Now my unusual hobby is Spinning. Not the excerise where people are on a stationary bike, but the actual turning raw fiber into well..yarn or string. I love doing it, and when I finally get into a rythm its very relaxing. I'm also teaching my self how to knit so I can use the sthe fiber I spin. I alreay know the basics of crochet but everyone in my spining class a couple of years ago talked about knitting and I got intrested in that. The other think I'm wanting to learn is weaving, it just sounds fun.
no unusual hobbies
just the average reading, cooking, gardening, playing on internet. Now with my books I'm bordering on obsession.

My unusual habits...
Hmm. Well, I think I'm becomming a bird lady. I spend much time making sure my bird bath is clean of debris and full of fresh water. I exclaim at the sight of a cardinal and I love figuring out which birds are nesting in the vine hedge in front of the shed--or the tangle of nandinas along the back fence.
FF, my dh is a realtor. He has a longtime customer who has 11 cats! the cutomer's dh is allergic to them. Whoa. And lately, here in my town, there's an ordinance that if you have more than three pets, you have to register them with the city! (!!!) You know, like sex offenders have to register. At any time, if your neighbors complain, you can be asked to get rid of all but three. I just think that's wrong--I mean, if you keep your pets indoors and they're not a nuisance to anyone, what's the prob? And if they are a nuisance, the person bothered had recourse already. Grrrr.

I don't have any unusual hobbies. I just read, cook, bake, and scrapbook.
I didn't know what dressage was til you explained it. I think it would be interesting to see.
Hobbies
It's cool that so many of you know what dressage is. Now I feel a little less strange.
kalyko - I also am a rock person. We have a rock tumbler, although we only used it once so far (it's a lot of work). We have a beautiful display of polished rocks from that batch. I also collect quartz crystals (the barn where I keep my horse is on land where gold was once mined).
Ellen - I admit I'm not much of a frog person--I'm more into geckos myself. But I understand the compulsion!
FF - I adore cats and live with two of them. Ever since my dog died, my yard seems to be cat central. I wouldn't mind it except they all seem to be unaltered male cats and some of them want to beat up my kitties.
Nancy - I am an avid folk dancer, too! I do international once a week and English Country Dance once a month. I also do a week-long folk dance camp in Stockton, CA every summer. Eight to ten hours of dance every day for 7 days. It's so much fun.
Dorthy - I've never done any spinning, but it's pretty big around here. I live in a rural area and people raise sheep and alpacas for wool. I've seen demos at our county fair and thought it looked like a cool thing to do. Unfortunately I'm allergic to wool (at least sheep wool), so it's not likely I'll take up spinning.

(Even if you only feed them. mwahaha) Well, actually, just from my county. It's only right her in my town that they have this ordinance.

My "weird" interest is tap dancing. I took lessons as a child but I never turned into Gene Kelly. I still tap dance to this day, just for fun.
Hobbies
Minna--I love dictionaries. I'm one of those people who goes to look up a word then gets distracted by all the other words around it.
LuckyLady34--One of my best friends from high school was a tap dancer. It's a challenging style of dance, that's for sure.

CONGRATS!!! NANCY!!!
CONGRATS!!! NANCY!!!
Karen,
A friend of mine and I used to do photography during dressage events because a lady he worked with participated and knew we were into photography. I got a wonderful picture of a pas de deux -- caught it just at a dramatic moment. Anyway, we watched and photographed a number of dressage events.
As a lifetime Kentucky resident, of course I love horses (and not just thoroughbreds). I think dressage is a great hobby, though I think it tends to be a bit costly, much like showing dogs, especially in conformation but also in obedience.
While I don't have any particularly unusual hobbies, my husband is currently spending some of his "fun" time memorizing Pi to 36 places, so far. Now, that's weird, but I love him anyway!
Nancy, congratulations on winning the book!

I'm always glad when there's a photographer at my dressage shows, although sometimes they have so many good shots of my horse, it's hard to choose which ones to buy (and boy are they expensive).
Regarding your husband working on memorizine pi out to 36 places, I'm impressed. My B.A. is in math (although my calculus, etc. is a bit rusty), so I can relate to the geekiness of memorizing pi.
