Vital Signs by Bobby Hutchinson HSR 1124 - Apr 03

Vital Signs is a very emotional book. It takes you into vital signsthe pediatric ward of a hospital where life runs the gamut from almost healthy to dying children. This is Hailey Bergstrom's world. She loves being a nurse - even when she feels so sad she wants to ball her eyes out. But she's gratified when she's the one they call to comfort the children and parents of this special ward. And she'll do anything to keep the spirits up of her precious charges.

One day, an abandoned toddler is brought into Hailey's ward. Her fierce maternal instincts kick into high gear as she joins the struggle to keep the severely dehydrated child alive.

Enter Roy Zedyck, the social worker assigned to the case. He has the power to decide what happens to the abandoned child that Hailey has fallen in love with. Full of integrity, will his feelings for Hailey obstruct his analysis of what's best for the child?

I enjoyed reading this book. Although it is a work of fiction, I know from personal experience that there are nurses such as Hailey Bergstrom working the pediatric wards today.

Measures to keep children quiet and in line have changed in the past 2 decades since my dd #1 was a patient on such a ward. Today's medical professionals now believe that a happy child will heal faster. Thank God!

Way to go, Bobby Hutchinson!

RE: VITAL SIGNS by Bobby Hutchinson

It DOES sounds like an awesome book, Anita Mae!  SmileMay I ask how you got the five-year-old book?  Is it a fave? A re-read?  A "find" from a second-hand store?

Treasure Hunting

Hey Marty - I actually have about 200 books in my tbr pile. Most are continuities that I don't want to read until I fill in the series - I have a lot of patience. I also love treasure hunting in used book stores wherever I go.

This book was in my stand-alone pile which I hadn't touched since last summer. It's only because of the New to You challenge that I'm going through it looking for new authors and lines.

And here I thought you were going to comment on my chocolate story....
