From Waif to his Wife

From Waif to His Wife

Book Forty-Two:  “From Waif to his Wife,” Lindsay Armstrong, Harlequin Presents, March, 2008, #2712, eBook, Adobe Format

“From Waif to His Wife,” is a “pregnant with another man’s baby” theme romance. I think this is the hardest romance theme to write convincingly. Given the Presents requirement for an alpha-male hero and the shorter Presents format, the credibility task is even more difficult. Given all these obstacles, Lindsay Armstrong wrote a very good story.

"From Waif to his Wife,” takes place in Australia and on a South Pacific Island.  The hero and heroine spend time on boats and planes. This travel provides for lots of action and a lot to like. I found the on-going reading enjoyment to be very high. The story is always entertaining.

What makes the story work so well is that the hero is at a point in his life where he is seriously thinking of settling down and starting a family.  After always dating tall, beautiful, model types, he is now looking for the kind of woman who wants a family and a lifetime commitment. The heroine in “From Waif to his Wife”  is not like the “safe” women he has always dated. Her personality is also more complex. In fact, the heroine is “two people” with two different names: one is a proper music teacher at a girls school and the other is a musician with a accomplished band.

The hero is rich, handsome, tall, and a perfect gentleman. He loves his sister and is very loyal to his family and employees. He is a very good man and naturally becomes increasingly -protective given the heroine’s current venerability. At first he just protects her, then he falls in love, then he comes to accept the baby. (The author took the easy way out on handling the baby problem which I feel is the only weak part of the book.) However, the book is very good. Lindsay Armstrong made every effort to keep the reader entertained on every page.

The sensual activity is very hot. Presents fans should be delighted with “From Waif to his Wife.,”   Also, this is another good book for romance fans who say they don’t like Presents alpha heroes because the hero here is as wonderful as any found anywhere in the world of romance.
