By day the proper Maisie Wallis taught music at a prestigious private school; by night the vivacious Mairead Wallis was the pianist in a well sought after band that played social engagements. It was Mairead who had met the gorgeous and charming Rafe Sanderson, and been swept off her feet. She’d just lost her parents suddenly, and was at her most vulnerable. Rafe made her feel loved and cherished, and after a night of passion he seemed to disappear. When Maisie discovers that she’s pregnant she searches for him, only to discover that her Rafe isn’t the real Rafe, but an imposter. Rafe Sanderson doesn’t know what to make of the young woman claiming that he fathered her unborn child. There are two possibilities; either the woman has cooked up an elaborate scheme to get at his millions, or she’s exactly who she says she is and there’s a bastard out there claiming to be him. Rafe agrees to help Maisie find the mystery man. Somehow the press has gotten wind that there is a mystery woman attached to him, who’s pregnant with his child. There’s only one thing to be done, Rafe proposes a marriage in name only, to protect Maisie from the ugliness of the press and a ruined reputation.
Oh this is a fun read! Maisie may be a bit naïve but she learns fast. She’s determined and lives up to the fiery redness of her hair often letting her temper get away from her. That temper puts her guard down and she always blurts out exactly how she’s feeling in all her honesty. Rafe doesn’t know if he should be charmed by Maisie, or whether he’s being put on by a very clever con artist. No matter what Maisie is, Rafe can’t stop his protective feelings and he admires the way she stands up for herself. These are wonderful characters. There are some great fantasy scenes! This was a delightfully fun read.

Rafe Sanderson – dark, very tall, handsome, formidable CEO … yet down to earth and genuinely concerned for Maisie … Maisie may be inexperienced of the world, but she’s smart and fearless when it comes to standing up for herself … Rafe loves that she doesn’t hesitate to put him in his place … I’d take him! …. Hmmm, who would I cast as Rafe? .. tough one, still thinking …….

Casting Rafe ......
This was a tough one .... I kept thinking Christian Bale as he played in Batman Begins ... but he's a really "dark" character though he has a good honourable heart .. no not Christian ............ So then I remembered a movie from 2000 starring Ben Affleck and Gwenith Paltrow called Bounce ... about an ad exec who gives his plane ticket to a man eager to get home to his wife and kids, only the plane crashes ... Ben's character feels compelled to go and meet the wife and help her get on her feet, only he hadn't counted on falling in love ....
Rafe Sanderson strikes me like that ad exec ... he's captivated with this woman who jumps right in with all her heart .... he can't help wanting to help Maisie and in the process he falls in deep ....

I had this book in hand and
I had this book in hand and skimmed the first few pages, to gear myself up to reading it.... and I read that the heroine was pregnant with some con-artist's baby. :( Boo!
I don't like the idea of her having a baby by a man that so took advantage of her. She was vulnerable and seduced by the wrong man. (It's fine when a heroine gets seduced by the RIGHT man, but icky when he's a rat bastard)
Can ya gear me up and get me past that block? Does the storyline and characters make up for that unappealing twist?
re: sleazey ex boyfriend
actually Janet, the hero's imposter that seduced her does redeem himself sort of ... the resemblance to the hero is explained really well
but this one really needs to be read because the real Rafe is totally awesome .... right from the first chapter he's impressed with the waif that literally stomps her feet because she gets so mad at him ... great humour! ... so yes, do read this one
I think the reviews were mixed on this book ... I really enjoyed it .... LA has a great voice and her characters are fresh .... which is amazing considering the length of her career! ... since 1981 and 165 books published in North America, more in the UK
