Hi everyone,
just wondering what you're reading these days. My bedside table is cluttered with books of all sorts. Right now I'm reading a variety of things, all at the same time. A little of this, a little of that. Just picked up a book and DVD tonight at Borders (one of my favorite places) on learning meditation. I've also found a few books on writing that I'm finding helpful. I do like a good how-to now and then, though overall I don't read much non-fiction. Mostly I love fiction, and I read just about anything that sparks my interest. I've just reread the first two books in a paranormal series that I adore and have been given an urban fantasy by a friend.
One of the most intriguing things I've read lately is The Life Organizer, by Jennifer Louden who wrote, The Woman's Comfort Book. Good stuff about getting your life organized and taking care of yourself, starting with your thoughts to navigate your way to your dreams.
So, what are you reading? We're going into a holiday weekend here in the US, so we have an extra day to play, rest up, or get some household chores done. I'm working most of the weekend and the holiday, so I won't be doing to much else. I do hope to get some of the meditation book read, some of the Life Organizer, and some of the urban fantasy started.
Do any of you read multiple books at the same time? I didn't used to until time became such an issue. I think it's just a mind game I play with myself, but I think that if I work on multiple books at once, then I get at least part of each one in, rather than reading one after the other. What do you think about that? Really, it's probably just something that makes me feel like I'm accomplishing more than I am.
Let's hear about what you're reading and why you're reading it. Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!

Molly, I am reading three books at once.
1. Sorted: the ultimate guide to organising your life once and for all. However it has dust on the cover so I don't think I'm doing a great job on reading it
2. Bet Me by Jennifer Cruisie
3.A Gondola on the Murray..Italian cooking in Australia...book research :-)

How many?
At one time, I used to be able to read anything up to half-a-dozen books simultaneously, each one left in a different room in the house so I could pick it up when I was there. But that was back in the days when I could read very fast (- more than five M&Bs in a day, if uninterrupted).
Since the anaphylactic shock and having to learn to read again, I'm very much slower and would be pushed to complete two. I've discovered that I now prefer to read one at a time, too... perhaps because I'm afraid they'll get muddled in my scrambled brain? <g>
On the other hand, as far as my writing goes, I can keep several story lines in my head (with appropriate brief notes on the computer just-in-case<g>) and can 'grab' bits and pieces at odd times... items in the paper, on the tv, overheard, etc... to add to them, ready for when I come to write each one.

Books, Lovely Lovely Books!
Molly, my bedside table and, I confess, the floor beside the bedside table are book repositories for me. And then there's the teetering to-be-read pile in the study but that's another topic all together! Mmm, actually I probably need to read Jennifer Louden's Life Organiser or maybe the book Fiona's talking about - Sorted: The Ultimate Guide to Organising your Life.
But anyway the books I'm reading right at this moment, are Linda Howard's Dying To Please and, for a complete change of pace, Steve Vinay Gunther's Understanding the Woman in Your Life.

My TBR pile disappeared!
I have a TBR bookcase (yes - one with seven shelves) next to my side of the bed, so I could've given you a huge list.
Except... we're decorating. Mow, I knew my TBR bookcase would have to move so I could paint behind it. But last night I walked into our bedroom to discover that there were NO BOOKS. DH had moved them...
(He has assured me that he hasn't mixed them up. He'd better not, because I had them in order and I had a really interesting bio of Queen Victoria - "Becoming Queen" - up next, after I've finished Louise Allen's excellent "The Piratical Miss Ravenhurst".)
Normally, I have a pile of books on my desk (research for my nonfic), which I dip into. Then there's the TBR bookcase next to my bed; and I normally have a book on the go in the kitchen during lunchbreaks (usually something foodie - I love the way Nigel Slater writes, and also like Giorgio Locatelli).
My daughter's the same, having three books on the go at once. She has one in her schoolbag, one in the car, and one in her bedrooms.
Son... I have yet to find something that he really likes. I'm trying him on John Wyndham, because he says he likes scifi. I did offer Alan Garner, but it clearly didn't grab him. So any recommendations for a 12yo boy who much prefers nonfic and is into sciency stuff would be appreciated...

And my TBR pile keeps getting bigger!
I love reading- the bath is a favourite place.( Comes from when my girls were small and it was the only place I could get a few minutes peace! never quite worked though, as they'd just bang on the door.) The trouble is I just can't resist buying new books. I have also bought books to play on my MP3 player so I can 'read' when I'm cooking or tidying up. I have Around the World in Eighty Days and Bill Bryson's Shakespeare on the go at the moment.
My girls have always loved reading and we share books. I read Twilght the other day. I have never been drawn to books about Vampires but a friend recommended it and I actually enjoyed it. Impossible love gets me every time. I read a lot of crime too. My idea of heaven would be to be locked in a bookstore for a day or two- as long as I had coffee and snacks.
Kate, my youngest daughter devoured the Horrible History books when she was younger. I can't remember how old she was, but your son might enjoy them.. Worth a try anyway!

One at a time
I tend to read one at a time, because I'm a "finisher". If I read 2 or 3 it would take me longer and I would feel...unfinished. So I read one and have a sense of accomplishment at adding a book to my challenge total. Then I move on.
Right now I'm reading Nat Anderson's Pleasured in the Playboy's Penthouse. Nat and I sold right around the same time and I love her writing...snappy and sexy and fresh.

Fiona,
that organizaing book sounds great. Will you give me a report on it when you're done-mostly as to whether it's doable or you have to dedicate your life to doing this. And Bet Me was a fun read. Jenny is really a funny person. I don't know her, I've just been fortunate enough to hear her speak at RWA.

Josie, you're amazing
Josie,
up to 5 books in a day? I'd faint if I even tried it. I hope you allowed yourself bathroom breaks back then! What I don't seem to be able to do well is keeping multiple books going while writing them. I do like to write different kinds of stories, so they're anything from paranormal to the medicals. Switching gears in my brain like that would cause it to sieze up, I think.
Hats off to you.

I tend to read at least three or four books at a time. I don't think I can read any more than that a one time. I just finished reading Vision In White by Nora Roberts, which I really enjoyed. I am about to start The Perfect Couple by Brenda Novak and Passion Unleashed by Larissa Ione.

Hi Molly, what an
Hi Molly, what an interesting topic! But then, it involves books, and I love books! I have an unmanageable TBR. It has reached such proportions that is now spilling out of the cupboard and onto the floor. I have tried to contain those books into a box, but alas, the box is full and they are spilling onto the floor, yet again.
I cut back to only to reader subscriptions. Harlequin Romance and Medicals. I'm trying to avoid my favorite bookstore, too. It is a horrible feeling. LOL
I used to be someone that had a different book in every room and I read based on what room I was currently in. But I no longer do that. I want to read one book at a time. I like focusing on the one story, the one relationship and not muddle stories in my head. Must be an aging brain thing, at least that's my story and I'm sticking with it.
The biggest challenge I have is to read through a box of older Medicals that was sent to me a while back. I've read about a third of the books, but every time I get a fresh batch of books from my reader service I interrupt the older books to read the hot-off-the-presses batch of books.

Sharon, are you peeking at my bedroom?
Sharon,
the description of your repository sounds much like mine. I did read the new one by Linda Howard: Death Angel. A recommended read, definitely. I think my favorite of her, though, is Mr. Perfect. Chilling.
I say after we read all of these wonderful organizing books, we come back to the blog with a recommendation of which we liked the best and why. I'm sure many other people would be interested in knowing the restults, too.

Kate, that's grounds for assault
Kate,
if your DH messed any of your wonderfully organized books up, I think it would totally justify smacking him a good one. (Just kidding-mostly) But it was very nice that he moved things and you didn't have to. Decorating and the seemingly simple act of painting, can take up a lot of time and energy.
Good going for your daughter in the reading dept. Three at a time is a good number. Keep trying with the son. I'm sure you'll find something of interest. How about Isaac Asimov?
We'll expect a full report after the decorating is all done with and you can get back to your reading pile that is more neatly organized than ever.

Anne, brilliant idea
Anne, you are so smart! Locked in the bookstore alone for a few days with provisions and I have to add, a bathroom, is my idea of heaven, too.
I used to read in the tub, but now, I'm afraid if I tried it, I'd fall asleep and drown, then where would I be? Tombstone would read: a good book killed her OR she died to read.

Donna, good point.
Donna, you make a good point about focus. Some of us are able to spread our brain thinner to handle multiple reading/writings at the same time, but I wonder if I retain as much as I would if I stuck to one thing at a time.
In the meditation book I started last night, one of the comments that struck me about when the brain won't quiet down. They call it monkey-brain. I definitely have one of those because there are times I just bounce all over the place and really have to focus on thinking in one direction. Then I get settled down to business and life is good again. But I definitely have a monkey brain. sounds like you do not!

Tiffany, excellent selections
Tiffany,
all of those books that you're about to start sound like fabulous reads. Do let us (me) know how you liked them. I always love a recommendation. And reading in a diverse spectrum, I believe, keeps us fresh and our mind stimulated with things we may not have thought of otherwise. I loved the Harry Potter books, while a friend of a friend, who is an avid reader read the first two or three pages of the first book and put it down, never to crack the books again.
A friend who is a teacher of 8th graders read the Twilight series to see what her students were all gaga about. She wouldn't have picked it up normally, as anything vampires isn't to her taste. But she at least read it to be able to have discussions with her students.

Nancy, it's a conspiracy
Nancy,
see, I think those little sneaky books in the TBR piles just conspire with each other. After all, among them, I'm sure they have every word in the written language between their covers. Then they simply figure out how to multiply without you even noticing.
So, my question to you is, once you are done with a book, how do you decide which book to read next? Do you just grab the one on the top of the pile, pull one from the middle at randow, or do you read titles and let the one that hits your gut guide your decision? Could it be a combination of all, depending on your mood, time crunch, and the weather? Do tell.

Molly, I'm one of those who cannot read while I'm actually writing, so my TBR pile grows more Pisa-like by the day and I have to hope for an indulgent read-fest between books!

Margaret,
good idea to stock upon the books for in between writing sessions. Earlier in the summer I indulged in a crafting session for about a week. I'm mad about paper and card making. A friend and I took a class that was decorating cigar boxes. I didn't have a cigar box, but had a wooden wine crate that held two bottles and decorated that. Great fun. My main writing time is in the mornings, so I do read in the afternoons and some evenings. I'll write in the evenings if something is particularly hot in my mind, but I usually stall after an hour.
Any recommendations from your pile?

usually
Usually I read one at a time, but not always. Right now I'm reading The Saphire Rose by David Eddings, A Hard Days Write (the stories behind the Beatles songs, a Finnish book, "Harjunpää and the Troublemaker" and Restless Wind by Aimée Thurlo.
one at a time
It has to be one at a time for me. Switching from book to book would tell me I wasn't gripped and that book would get dumped. At the moment I'm reading the Perseus Jackson series because my nephew raved about it so much I wanted to see what he liked. I have to say it's very clever writing, with some laugh-out-loud lines. It's also one of these series that makes a writer think, Damn, wish I'd thought of that idea. Kate, your son might like the series if he hasn't come across it already, but you need to read them in order. Before that I was re-reading Terry Pratchett's 'Hogfather'. I *love* Terry Pratchett's quirky humour.
Maggie Kingsley
Minna-good reading
The Thurlo's are always good for a fun read. They live here in New Mexico and I've seen them once in a while. They write so fast that I can't keep up with them.

One at a Time
I'm a one book at a time reader. As far as my TBR pile is concerned however it is exceptionally large and scattered throughout the house on various shelves and in plastic boxes. As for how to decide which book to read it is purely a random thing. I just grab a book and read most of the time. At this particular time I am reading the August medicals which arrived while I was on vacation. Who knows what I will read next but it will more than likely be Supers as I am participating in the monthly challenges here and this months spotlight is on Superromance.

Ellen,
good going on the writing challenge, but I'm glad you're working on the medicals first.
I'm with you on picking books from the TBR pile at random. My mood, I think, is what guides my decision most of the time. Or if someone has recommended a book, I'll go for that, too.

So, my question to you is,
Right now I am determined to finish the box of medicals so they can be mailed on to the next person in line. I put them in age order. The oldest ones at the top of the pile and the most recent at the bottom of the pile.
The other books are a jumble right now. Sometimes I just grab whatever is at the top of the pile. But most often I go through and put them in the same oldest at top and work down to newest. Sometimes I have series in the piles, I want to make sure that I read them in order.
The weather has absolutely nothing to do with what I am reading. As evidenced by the fact that I read a Christmas book on the one hot day we had this summer.

Nancy and her selection process
hi Nancy,
sounds like there is a little motivation in the reader's challenge (is that right) for you to get certain ones finished, then send them on to the next person. Where do you live that you've had only one hot day?
I've been sweating for months and in great anticipation of fall weather.

I live in the capital
I live in the capital district area of NY state and we had about 2 weeks of 80 degree weather. There was maybe one day that went into the low 90s. It was a very unusual summer. Mid June to early August is when we usually get the hot, humid weather. None in June, none in July--in fact, July was wet and rainy. First week of August was dryer and warmer, but not humid. Second week of August finally got warm and humid (notice, I said warm--not hot, but it was humid, so it was more uncomfortable). The third week of August was our hot and humid week. Again, only one day was truly horrible. Another week of rain. Finally, this past week has been sunny, perfect weather in the 70s and low 80s--no humidity--not beastly.
Very strange almost summer. Or the summer that never really happened.

Humidity
I great up back east in the very humid, and pollen filled, area of western Pa. Now that I live in NM where the humidity is next to nothing, when it's up to 24-40% I'm miserable. I like the 12% humidity better.
Well, things have slowed down, so I'm going to try to get some dinner going before work. Friday night before a holiday weekend can be hectic, especially with a full moon overhead.
Thanks all.

So many books, not enough time
Hi Molly. I'm a one book at a time too as I agree with Maggie on the whole if its not gripping you then its not worth wasting a few hours of your life you're never going to get back!!
I just counted - 15 books on my bedside table!!
In order of stacking the top 7 are - Sharon Archer's debut, Dogs and Goddesses - Jenny Crusie and friends, Loving A Lost Lord - Mary Jo Putney, Love Is A Four Legged Word - Kandy Shepherd, Tailspin - Denise Rossetti, Save The Cat - Blake Snyder, Forecast - Jane Tara.
The question is - when will I get to read them??

Several books
As for my reading habits, if I buy multiple books at one time, I have to "dip" into them and read at least a little tiny bit of each one before I finish one. Recently, I made several book purchases.
After seeing the movie "Julie and Julia", my interest in Julia Child was piqued. (Meryl Streep did a fantastic job of portraying her, by the way!) I had never realized that Julia was quite so tall (6'2") or quite so bawdy. So I picked up Julia Child's book about her life in France on which the movie was based. I haven't gotten very far along in that one yet, but it's been great to read when waiting for my father at appointments, etc., as it doesn't hurt the flow of the story to put it down. It's more like a bunch of vignettes.
At the same time, I picked up 2 books by one of my favorite authors, Susan Donovan, called He Loves Lucy and A Kept Woman, which I'm trying to be good and not start yet. I'm well into He Loves Lucy, which details a fat woman's journey to fitness and to love with her fitness trainer. I love it thus far. The trainer is a great, sexy, lovable hero (raising his brother with Down's Syndrome after his parents' death), and I also love how the heroine is portrayed.
I also bought and just finished (yesterday) Double Play by Jill Shalvis (another author I tend to love), which was absolutely wonderful, emotion-packed, and pretty hot with a hero to die for, and a book by Lora Leigh called Only Pleasure, in which I'm about a third of the way through. I hadn't read anything by Lora Leigh previously. I have to say that though the book is very well written and very, very hot, it's a bit out of my league. Usually I will check a book somewhere in the middle before buying to see how the couple is interacting and whether their relationship dynamic at that point appeals to me, but I didn't do that this time. I probably should have, as I would have realized that their sexual relationship is considerably more adventurous than suits my personal comfort level. There is very strong emotion between the H and h, and I'm sure the book would appeal greatly to someone more into erotic fiction.
