What are you reading this summer?

It seems that every summer I get on a kick of reading a particular line.  Well, it did not happen this year.  For some reason, I am reading from most of the lines.  What about you?  Are you reading only one line, or just a certain author?

I am immersed in

Harlequin Historicals. Just read Michelle's Viking book and Carol Townsend is next. I did read a Blaze but it was Hope Tarr's new one and it was a historical too. (That reminds me I need to put up a book review!)

I haddn't read historicals

I haddn't read historicals for years, but when Michelle S wrote the Gladiator's Honor, I read it and was hooked again.  I'll have to get the blaze.

I'm trying to catch up on my HMRs

I'm up to summer '04. Yeah, you read that right. I did stop subscribing in '05 or '06 b/c I was so far behind, but have bo't some here and there since then.

I threw out a mini challenge this past weekend that if you're choosing between two books, to choose the shorter one. I think I said 30% of the time? I'm aiming for higher, but I am also way behind on my Bombshell reading (which are among my longer reads). The line closed a year and a half ago, and I still have 20-30 sitting in my extra bedroom dresser drawer.

How's the walking going? You have plenty of time, I think, to do it "right". My mom wants to take our 80something aunt to Quebec in two years. If we can, we'll rent a house for 3-4 weeks in the village that my great-grandfather is from. So, Netherlands and/or France is at least 3 years away. Does that give you enough time but not too much? :)

If I had your email (hint), we could support each other's efforts. I need to start walking and never think to do it!

Oh, PS, I have quite a few French language romances from Sadhbh, so I guess I should read some of those this summer, huh? It's hard to motivate myself when it takes me a week to read something in French and the English version would take two hours. Of course, if I'd JUST DO IT, I'm sure I'd get faster. sigh.

Penn - I hear ya!  My

Penn - I hear ya!  My sister is visiting this summer to stay with dd while I work.  She told me last night she loves to read all of the books I have piled on the computer stand.  (That is my TBR pile.)

Same way with walking, ever since I decided to do it, it rains almost every day, so hard it is crazy to walk in it.  I have to get moving soon though.  My sister teaches languages and occasionally I will but them in French or Spanish for her to read.  She loves it and says it helps her retain  her fluency.

What I am reading.

I am going to work on my thinner books per Penn's challenge.  So I will be reading mostly Desires and Presents.  I am also going to read a few of my "read in 2008 books" which aren't romances so even though I really want to read them I always push them aside to read a romance.

I agree there are times the

I agree there are times the thinner books are perfect because they can be read in an afternoon in the swing.  I also have some books that are not romance I want to read.  Our county fair is next week and so I will be busy with the girls and their projects, as well as my own quilts I am entering.

It looks like August is my only non-hectic month of the summer, and I plan to enjoy all of it.

I love reading Desire and Presents.  I used to have a complete set of the Desire books when they were solid red covers.

All those books! I wish I lived near you so I could mooch a few. There are some older ones at our library on base; do many of you ladies blog older books?

I'm reading all over as I

I'm reading all over as I always do. There are so many upcoming books that I have to read I haven't found time to read any back logged books. There are some authors that I have backlists that are screaming at me to find the time.

Angel, I blog everything that I read

so yeah, I blog older books. Including Anne of Green Gables, which came out in 1908.Laughing I've seen lots of bloggers reviewing older H/S books, too . . . actually, I blogged a HR (it was actually a M&B) from the 1940s. SunCityResident gave me all her old Mary Burchells. Ms. Burchell started writing for M&B in the '30s and did so til the early '80s. She used the money from her writing to help Jews escape Europe prior to WWII. She and her sister are credited with saving 29 lives.

Are you blogging any books that you read with your kids? Remember to do that, too. I'm up 10 books b/c of my kids' stories. I combine them til they equal a full-length book. Sometimes I only need to combine 2, sometimes 4 or 5. It's an interesting mix . . . my own choices and thiers.

Star,

I'll be glad to read your blogs. I have several of your recommended books on my TBB list . . .

going to try some tbr's

I'm going to try reading some of the three book series I have piled up. I really like reading them all in one go.

Penn : I have most of Mary Burchell's books in a box in my basement. She and Betty Neels were the first two authors I started collecting.  I wish Harlequin would bring out her autobiography as a special book, I have searched for it on the internet but any copies around are way to expensive for me. It's called We Followed Our Stars By Ida Cook(her real name) and was published in 1950.  It does tell about her and her sister. I think I am out of luck though as she isn't a current writer.

Kaelee, I reviewed it

here . . . and vickiso reviewed it here (it has a different name! -- Safe Passage). And here's my rambling blog entry that I wrote while reading the book . . .

I was hoping that for the M&B centenary that they'd re-release it. Since it doesn't look like that's happening, I'm still hoping for the H 60th next year that they do something. They really should.

I do blog the older books I

I do blog the older books I read, although I have not blogged any this year.  I need to do that.  My late dh & I purchased the contents from a used book store one and had them stored.  We lost a lot of books in a flood, etc over the years.  I still hit flea Markets and watch e-Bay for books I am looking for.  I'll start looking for the book you need.

Penn - It is a shame you do not live closer as I am sure I have lots of books you would enjoy.

I blog everything I read

I blog everything I read too.

Penn - Don't you just hate how your TBB list grows. That's different from your TBR group right. TB bought. I have so many of those too. Not just upcoming releases, but older books that I want to find and read. Surprised

Thanks Penn.

I never thought of blogging the books i read with my boys. We did read The Deathly Hallows 3 times this year but I guess I can only blog it once!

I will have to research Ms. Burchell- she sounds quite a character. We recently drove through Sun City, AZ and I never thought it could be a romance readers haven.

Thanks Penn

Thank you so much for all the links.  I think Mary Burchell must have touched something in me as  she was the first author I collected and then I saved Betty Neels. I just loved those Dutch doctors. Mary Burchell wrote a series of books called the song cycle I think.  Since reading your links I can understand why she wrote the series. I am now craving a Mary Burchell book so will go digging for them.

I also like Violet Windspear

I also like Violet Windspear (I think I spelled the last name correct).  There for a while, I wanted to live on a sheep station. Laughing  I always bought all of her books.  Have no idea about how many she wrote.

Violet Winspear

Yes her name strikes a chord with me also. I looked her up on a site called Fantastic Fiction and it said she wrote 72 books.  I recognized some of the book covers. She passed away in 1989 so have to almost be my age to remember her. I had the map of Holland memorized at one point and knew where all the motorways in England went. Now I read lots of books with Austrailian setttings and I take out picture books from the library to see what their unique world is like. Isn't it great what we can find out about just by reading our beloved romances?

Yes, it is fantastic that

Yes, it is fantastic that we can travel the world in our own home.  I have one book of hers in which she told how to make shephard's pie.  I tried it and it was delicious.  I think that was the appeal for me more than the romance when I was young.  Being cooped up on a farm in rural southeastern Ohio, I dreamed of travel.

Did you like Charlotte Lamb?  I loved some of hers also.  She seemed to always be pushing the envelope!
