Tall, dark and handsome or....................blonde?
The age-old debate. What do women really want? Are we wired to want tall, dark and handsome or is that a media perception? The men we see in ads and movies tend to be predominantly dark-haired - is it a case of demand or supply? Perhaps there are just more brunettes in the world!
Who remembers the debate over the new 'James Bond'? "How could they consider a blonde Bond,"asked women all around the world?
Personally I was totally horrified at the idea until I saw the movie - I decided there and then that Daniel Craig would be the basis for one of my future heroes. Not sure how tall he is and he's definitely not dark but his physique, the way he wears a tux and the fact he could do just about anything he turned his hand to, including protecting women, was enough for me, not to mention those amazing blue eyes. So perhaps 'tall, dark and handsome' is simplifying things a bit.
In my current manuscript the hero is blonde. This is my twelfth medical romance and Sam is my first blonde hero. I always pick a man to base the hero on, someone to give him movement, expression, a manner of speech but, until now, they've all been dark (and tall and handsome). Think Hugh Jackman and George Clooney. This time i'm using Simon Baker, star of "The Mentalist", Daniel Craig will have to wait his turn. Why Simon? His character's motivation is to avenge the deaths of his wife and daughter and he has strong opinions, trusts his own judgement and is loyal and honest. Simon himself is blonde and an Aussie (like me). But i didn't choose him because he was blonde and I guess I could have made my hero a dark version but I like him the way he is.
But what makes the perfect hero? Why do women love Jane Austen's Mr Darcy? Did we love the character as much before Colin Firth's protrayal? Would we rather have a blonde with a sense of humour than a dull, dark hunk? Would we rather have a red-head who can dance than a brunette beef-cake? Or would we, and be honest here, want a tall, dark, handsome man who can wield a scalpel and then serenade us with a guitar after we've eaten a fabulous dinner that he has cooked in a spotless kitchen that he has cleaned
?
What do women want? Are you happy with the posted pic of Daniel Craig or would you have preferred the shot of Colin Firth emerging from the lake in his wet shirt in 'Pride & Prejudice'? What is it you're looking for? Let me know,
Emily

Blondes have more fun?
I adore that photo of Daniel rising out of the ocean - it's totally hawt! I think the thing that makes Daniel Craig a good Bond has nothing to do with his hair colour and everything to do with a face that looks like its been punched around a bit. I mean really, how many agents of 007 calibre truly go through their careers without a single mark? I also think its why guys like Daniel, he looks like he's a bit bruised and battered, like he may have lost a fight or two, like he's falliable - not all perfect straight teeth and roman nose.
Blondes. Hmm, well as I married a blonde I can hardly refute their appeal
but I can say the first blonde I wrote I was asked to make dark haired as blonde haired heroes didn't sell as well on covers
Go figure...

How about a redhead?
Hi Emily!
I'm supposed to be recuperating, but I couldn't resist reading your blog today. Pardon any typos - pain meds on board!
OK, I think dark haired men like Daniel Day Lewis are mesmerizing. I like how brown hair contrasts with green or hazel eyes. Sandy blond hair always catches my eye, especially if it's on a guy with a square jaw and broad shoulders. But honestly, I adore redheads! I know it is a curse to write a red headed hero (ok for heroines though) but isn't Prince Harry just adorable? I'm falling short on movie star examples - I guess that gives us a clue on just how popular is the red headed hero.
Best Wishes,

As the mother of two red
As the mother of two red -headed heroes in the making, my debut novel had' Huon of the red hair.'My editor never said a word about hair colour. The book sold well and I didn't get any complaints from readers about hair colour at all ;-) Huon had every charateristic trait of a hero...Tall, handsome, caring, gallant, slayer - of - dragons and I reckon that is the key. I've had blonde, brown, red- headed and black haired heroes and one heroine with pink hair.
IThanks for the pic of Clive there, Emily. And Simon Baker, yes I can see that. Me? I'm a sucker for the eyes....

I love a hunk of any color
I've been all over the place in my books. In real life I've tended toward the dark and swarthy, but married a blond/blue eye Norwegian. Go figure. I think the color of the package doesn't matter as much as what's in the package.

Hair color?
doesn't matter to me as long as the character is well written. I don't think I've ever read about a bald hero but nothing is impossible.

Dark, blonde or bald
Good point Kaelee, I wonder how a bald hero would go - as the comments point out it's not so much the package as what's in the package - Bruce Willis in the Die Hard movies anyone?

Cover art
LOL Amy and Fiona, my debut cover also featured the heroine as does my current book so I don't suppose i need to stress about writing a blonde hero, he might not even make the cover! Although I must admit my favourite cover of all my books is for "The Playboy Firefighter's Proposal" 'cos the Art Department were spot on with my hero

Prince Harry
Redheads are thin on the ground, aren't they?I'm struggling to think of any actors or musicians who are in that category but Prince Harry is a great example, I'm sure he'd have us all in stitches. A good sense of humour is seriously attractive. Think I might google redheads and see what i find. Ewan Macgregor is on my list of potential heroes (riding his motorbike around the world) but I'm not sure if he's technically a redhead. Hmm, more research required!
Hope you're recovering steadily, Lynne.

Bald men
Ooh yes, Emily, Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Yummy, yummy. There's a man who got better looking the balder he became.
Now Kaelee, you've set me a very interesting challenge....
Anyone care to join me? Shall I prepare Richmond when I'm there in a few weeks for a rush of bald heroes?

Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
I married a man with dark hair and dark eyes and a quick audit of my heroes shows that, yes, there is a preponderance of men with his colouring.
But then, as there's always a little bit of DH in every one of my heroes, sometimes he appears with blond hair, too.
To me, it's a bit like chocolate... those of us who like it (waving both hands madly!) have our preference for dark or milk, etc, but very few of us would say no to chocolate of a different colour if it were on offer.

Hm, my first puppy love
Hm, my first puppy love crush was on a tawny haired, blue-eyed, eight-year-old son of a preacher man. My next puppy love crush was on a tawny haired, blue-eyed fifteen-year-old son of a different preacher man. LOL
My first adult love was a dark skinned, dark eyed, jet-black haired doctor--Yeah, okay, cliched--young nurse falls for the handsome intern.
My dh is of english and swedish ancestry -- he was a towed-haired blond until he hit puberty, sandy-haired when I married him, hazel eyes.
But more tall, dark, handsome men turn my head then light haired men. I prefer blue eyes to brown eyes.
Ultimately, it is what is inside the package that really counts.

Re; Bald men
My mom's sister, a nurse married a hair challenged rancher. My uncle was the first younger bald man I'd seen. He was very good looking and had a wicked sense of humor and could tell bald jokes with the best of them. It helped that Yul Brenner was starring in The King and I shortly afterwards. Talk about a strong visual of a really hunky bald guy. Bring on the bald heros!

Dark haired doctors
So - we're after dark haired doctors, fair haired saints (thanks Nancy), red-headed comedians ( BTW the only red-heads I've been able to find are Rupert Grint and Ron Howard who's now more bald than red!) and bald action men! Does that sound about right
? Kaelee, you'll have to keep an eye out for a Bruce Willis or two from Amy and me!

Why are men like chocolate?
Chocolate is mentioned almost as often as men on this blog! But good comparison Josie and I agree, some days I'm a milk chocolate girl, some days white chocolate but I'm always fussy about what's on the inside! So, as long as our heroes are good men we won't be too fussy about their hair colour, or even if they have hair! Must remember to remind men of that fact

Bruce Willis
Can I just point out that I'm married to his double? Seriously
- how lucky am I??
I have to admit that dark hair and blue eyes usually does it for me. (I make an exception for Mr Banderas's gorgeous brown eyes.) But the hero in the second part of the duo I'm revising now is blond and utterly gorgeous.
And me too with a heroine on my debut cover.

Interesting
I've mentioned this in various blogs before, but, I think, not in this one. I read about a study done on female lions. It seems that lionesses prefer their men TDH (dark manes were clearly preferred over lighter manes), too. The article suggested that there may be some biological imperative that tells them that dark-maned lions are better candidates for propagating the species (no doubt for other traits that tend to go along with darker manes, perhaps regarding health or virility or strength or something similar). Of course, that doesn't necessarily translate to humans, but I found it interesting, anyway.
If I were just picking out a man based on appearance, I would definitely go TDH almost every time. (Think Gilles Marini or George Eads or any number of tall, dark, and handsome stars.) That doesn't mean that I never find blond men attractive. If you saw Brad Pitt (and his buns) in Troy, well, let's just say he was attractive if a bit young. Robert Redford (whom I always thought of as blond) was and is attractive to me. Simon Baker. In fact, the story that I've had running through my head, which may or may not ever make it to paper, features a blond hero.
My own personal hero is D&H, if not T. Well, and over the years he's grown more and more B (bald). But he's still my hero. Ultimately, it's what's on the inside that is most beautiful.

Daniel Craig
Inspires this romance writer, too! :) My second Medical featured a blond hero named Daniel. And yes, I was inspired. :) Of course that book was also inspired by Dr Travis Stork and my good friend Lindsey Brookes who wanted a story with Dr Travis, but that's another story. And for the record he's another gorgeous blond hero who impressed me way much in real life when I met him in 2006.
I'm married to a dark haired, brown eyed man, but I do appreciate blond & blue-eyes, too. :)
