What is it about a military man?

9780373793778.JPG

The military has been on my mind a lot lately.  For those of you who haven't seen my website, or don't know me, I come from a military family--my dad is a veteran Marine, retired, my brother a veteran Marine who, after 'retiring' (heck, he's the "baby" of the family Wink) from the Marines, joined the Army to serve when so many of our men and women were being called into active duty in recent years.  He's been to Iraq twice, and is about to be redeployed to another part of the world, so naturally, all the servicemen and women and their families are in my thoughts and prayers.

And, naturally, with that kind of background--I have a love for military heroes Cool.  If they have half the character and loyalty and sense of honor and duty as my father and brother, (and unique sense of humor!) then those are going to be great men to write about and read about and fall in love with.

With my Intrigue books, I've found my niche writing about cops--and my old stomping grounds in Kansas City, MO.  I've written a few non-cop, non-KC stories, but that's mostly what I write there, and I love it!

But with Harlequin Blaze, I've discovered a wonderful home for my military heroes.  It feels so right to me to be writing about Marines and soldiers, and the women and families who love them.  There's such an emotional intensity inherent with these stories that I love.  In my current Blaze, AT YOUR COMMAND, Captain Zachariah Clark and his wife, Becky, who knew each other for all of six days before they married impulsively and he shipped out on his most recent deployment, must now get to know each other.   He's been wounded both physically and mentally, so can't just pick up where they left off eighteen months ago.  This is a story about coming home--about the adjustments a husband and wife make to survive and thrive when they're apart for extended periods of time, and then again, adjusting when they're back together again.  Beyond the romantic suspense elements of the story--nothing like danger to bring out the best in a Marine!--I had a great time writing Zachariah's character.  Becky's, too--it takes a strong woman to be a military wife.  Yeah, he's a big brawny hunk who can defuse bombs and make love with equal dexterity--but it's more about the man inside.  That sense of honor.  That drive to protect and defend and do what he believes is the right thing, no matter what it may cost him personally.

I've gotten a lot of great feedback on this book.  I'm flattered and grateful. I've had several amusing emails about readers "confessing" they bought AT YOUR COMMAND because of the cover (heck! he's on display at my writing desk, too Wink), but that they loved the pages inside the cover even more.  That they loved Zachariah Clark, especially.

So, what is it that makes a military man such a great hero for you?

Loved this one!!

I'm also addicted to the military hero. I think it has something to do with the willingness of the military men and women to do what other people aren't willing to do.

Side note: Basic Training was the first Blaze book that I ever read. (I love Travis as a hero.) Because of how much I liked that book, I started reading more and more Blazes and now I buy all of them every month.

Military heroes

I love books with military heroes!  I agree with V1978lp,  one of the things that attract me is that they are willing to give their all for their country.  They're strong and brave, with a commanding presence that awes me.

The cover is to die forWink, the best I've seen so far this year.

And Julie, whether it's the KC cops or military heroes, you've got me hooked on your booksSmile!

Lynn

Thanks, guys!

I'm delighted to have made you a Blaze convert, V1978lp! Cool

Travis was a fun hero to write.  And it was while I was writing his book, that the story for Zachariah and Becky began to gel in my head.  I knew Captain Zach couldn't just stay an email buddy--he needed a story of his own!

And Lynn, I'm pleased to hear you're enjoying the different types of books I write.  That's very flattering.  So, do you have a favorite hero?  Or top list?  We've been discussing Intrigue heroes on the Intrigue blog, and it's interesting to hear what readers think is hot and/or heroic.

Thanks,

Worst was being in Germany while he was in Desert Storm.    I have the greatest respect for our military men & women & their spouses & always will.        Cheryl

Thank you!

Hugs and blessings to you and your family, Cheryl!  And a big thank you to your dh for serving his country and to you guys for supporting him! Smile

I hope you enjoy the book!  I'll warn you, it's steamy Innocent.  But I think it's packs some deep emotion--and is true to some of the issues my family and extended family has experienced.

Much Appreciated

We do appreciate it,Julie, will show dh your comments this weekend .   I can remember when he was in Desert Storm & the girls & I were in Germany how we only heard negative about us being involved. But then when we heard from so many in the States, the support was wonderful. While he was there he received so many packages ,letters & cards from familie, friends & many he didn't even know,it kept his morale up.                                                                    I got sidetracked here, wanted to let you know I just ordered Nine-Month Protector and At Your Command,so am anxious for them to arrive.Smile

Supporting the troops and their families

Thanks, Cheryl--I hope you enjoy the books! Smile

Yes, I know how support from home can make a huge difference in troop morale.  When my brother was in Iraq this last time, it was, of course, over Christmas.  He emailed home and said they had one young man under his command who didn't have any close family at home, and never received any mail or care packages.  He asked all of us in the family to "adopt" this young man for Christmas and send him stuff.  Well, we told members of our churches, friends, etc.--and this young man ended up getting all kinds of cards and Christmas gifts.  My brother said it was the first time he'd ever seen Justin speechless Sealed.  Several of us continued to correspond with Justin through the duration of his tour.  My brother said it made a huge difference in Justin's attitude, as well as the entire unit.

Turned out Justin is a pretty good cook, too--apparently, he got all kinds of barbecue stuff for Christmas--and he grilled food for everyone!

So I know, just hearing from my brother, my father, and friends like Justin, that just knowing someone on the homefront is thinking about you and will take the time to show their support makes a huge difference!

At Your Command ~ that cover is...

...one HOT cover.  Even if I'd never heard of you Julie I'da bought that one!   Sizzlin?  that's for darned sure!
But as I do enjoy your books so much, yeah I got that one asap and it more than lived up to the cover.  Surprised

As for what it is about a military man?  Other than the fact that they wear the uniform with pride; that they risk everything for the freedom and protection of others; that they do more than live the golden rule...?
Actually I guess that's exactly why stories about military men, police officers, firefighters really, really appeal to me.

Coming in late

Just found this blog. Wow that's one heck of a cover, it's on my to buy list which is nearly as long as my tbr list. I have Basic Training in the tbr list, will have to bump it up some.

My favorite thing about my military man is his code of honor. My husband is in the Air Force. He's 3rd generation military and his code is breathtaking and totally old fashion at times but I love it and him dearly,

Thank you!

Missy--tell your hubby and his family thank you!  Wow--three generations serving their country--I can tell you're very proud, and should be!  And thanks to your family, too, for being such great supporters on the home front!

We're a multi-generational military family, too.  Great inspiration Smile.

I just read your profile and see you've published a book.  What's it called and what is it about?  And Alaska is a place I've always wanted to visit!!  It just looks gorgeous.  Though I'm wimp enough that I'd want to visit in the summer.  Nebraska winters are challenging enough for me Tongue out.

I just had to jump in here

I just had to jump in here too.....I love the military heros. I am married to a retired Marine who started his military life as a Navy SEAL. He transferred into the Marine Corps just before I met and married him (met while I was inspecteing his motor pool). The integrity and loyalty of the Marines we knew and worked with have generated friendships we still maintain. And I just love reading stories where those traits come shining through!!

Julie, I have read some of your books and even have one in my tbr right now. Always great fun!!

Visiting in the summer is best

You get to see so much more if you come up here in the summer time, there's only 5 hours of night in Anchorage. This being my first winter up here, I haven't ventured to far from the house or base. But it's very beautiful and the kids are getting a great experience out of it. I've got some cool pics up on my myspace page, and this spring I've got two pages worth of adventures written down to do. So I'll be taking plenty more. A moose ran down the center of the street yesterday but my camera was upstairs. Oh well, maybe next time.

I write under the pen name Elena Croft and my book is call Wet and Wild: Three of Hearts. It's about a woman looking for her lifemate, oh and she's a werebeaver. It's available on fictionwise. It's part of a series I did with Aline and Jennie (piper), who are around the eharl site somewhere.

Yes I am very proud of him, as well as his father and grandfather. Our son already says he's going to be join the military and he's only eight. We'll have to wait and see. They've all done so much it's inspiring.
