What's In a Name?

CA8901WN.jpg

Names are so danged important when we write our stories and often if an author is asked to change the name of a main character, she goes a little bonkers. At least I do.Wink

I give a whole lot of thought to the names I use in my books.  I dream up my heroes and heroines and give them certain traits that belong to their name.  For instance, I wouldn’t name my heroine Heather or Sarah, if she were gruff and gutsy. She’d probably be Jodi or Josie or Joey.

I wouldn’t name my hot, sexy, ladies man hero, Harold or even Donald (I married a Don though, and he’s hot and sexy, but I think I’m biased) No, my heroes are Jacks or Jakes or Treys or Wades.

So choosing a name is especially hard for me. It has to hit me JUST RIGHT.  The name has to fit my character to the letter.  I know this is true of all authors.  We pay special attention to the names we use.

Often I use unorthodox means to find names. Sometimes, I use the best baby name books, but I’ve been known to peruse the PRCA (rodeo) website for both first and last names of my heroes.  I’ve also used the Santa Anita Racetrack for jockey names and believe it or not, horses names.  They make good titles of books too!!

Here’s a list of my favorite hero and heroines names:

Blue Montgomery from Winning Jenna’s Heart – Harlequin Historical

Cash Callahan from Winning Jenna’s Heart – Harlequin Historical

Emma Marie Rourke from Bodine’s Bounty – Harlequin Historial (hero calls her Emmy)

Elena (Laney) Royal from The Corporate Raider’s Revenge- Desire

Case Jarrett from The Heart of a Cowboy – Desire

Code Landon from Do Not Disturb Until Christmas – Desire

Vanessa Dupree from Reserved for the Tycoon – Desire

And favorite place name:

2 Hope Ranch from Like Lightning – Desire

Do names of characters stick out in your mind?  Are there any that you’ve never forgotten from books or movies?  Have any favorites?

Look for our new Desire Contest coming soon but be sure to take an umbrella – DRENCH YOURSELF IN DESIRE Book Shower will be starting soon and all you have to do is post a comment to enter!!

name's are important !!

For men I know I fall easily for Jacks, Nicks and Sams.

For women I just love southern names : Emma Jean, Jolie, Jenny (don't know if Jenny is indeed a southern name actually)...

In anywase I would have some trouble falling for a Harold Wink

It's all in a name

Charlene, I totally agree with you on names. I spend hours choosing names for my characters and it always means a lot to me to have a name that is reflective of their personality or place in the world.

From other authors, I've always loved the names Grace and Ethan.

From my books, well, I have to admit I love them all, Even Jack Dolan in Tycoon's Valentine Vendetta whose name originally was Hunter (and was Hunter on the back cover copy, eek!) but because there was another hero scheduled that month with the same first name, and because he was part of a continuity, we had to change my guy's name.

re: What's in a Name?

Charlene, I'm the same in searching for names for my characters that must fit them. If the name doesn't feel right, then I don't use it. I do tend toward the hero names like Damien, Jarrod, Nick. And for the heroines name like Briana, Lana, Danielle.

Yvonne, you like Grace and Ethan for names? That's the two main characters in Nora Roberts' Rising Tides. Have you read it? A great read.

What's in a name

I haven't had an editor request a name change too often.  The last one was for Mr. Strictly Business.  I wrote the book with the hero named Nick Piretti.  But there were two Nick variations that were out that month, both continuities where the name had been pre-set in previous books.  So I changed it to Gabe Piretti.  I like the name Gabe.  I was just disappointed that I couldn't enjoy it while I was writing it.

I guess I like Italian names best.  Can't say why since we're of Irish descent.  But Salvatore and Dante are two of my favorites.  And I love Biblical names.  They're like comfort names.  Grace, in particular.  The name seems to go straight to character.

O No! Yvonne

I just rushed to check my copy of Valentine's Vendetta but that's the Aust/NZ edition and they got that right. What a pain! We must have similar tastes, I had an Ethan in Trophy Wives and I'm proposing a Grace (Gracie) right now!

I think we had to change a couple of names around in the Diamonds series because we had too many J's or something but it was early in the piece. And in the Dakota Fortunes series, my h was given to me as Violet, which took a bit of getting used to but it seemed to fit. And then someone discovered there had been a Violet Fortune in one of the other Fortune series, so I had to change it to - Skylar. Erk. I guess I was used to it by the time I'd finished writing it.

Charlene I love your 'cowboy' names, and that you sometimes use horses for names! I love horses (at the track, not to ride) and dh owns parts of horses. I know a horse called Broken Bobby (cos he broke his leg, duh) or one my bil owns is called Blue Gum Motel Shines (bleagh) but I will look out for some (entertaining) possiblities.

Nice of you to keep we stay-at-homes company while everyone is away at Nationals. Tongue out

Hi Emmanuelle

I've used Sam, Nick and Jack as my heroes.  Love all those names.  It's a chore not to repeat hero's names.

And I agree that I love Grace.  I've used it for an anthology I wrote .  Also have used Jolie too.  Other  favorites of mine are  Sarah and Emma.

I have to change the heroine's name in my Upcoming book, Texan's Wedding-Night Wager.  Our editors wrote the bible and had the names in place before they picked the authors to write the books. My heroine's name was ...Charlene!!   LOL!   We agreed on Cara instead.

It's a good thing we have a little different tastes in names or we'd all be switching names!!  Must be a chore for the editors too when that happens.  I haven't used Jarrod or Damien yet.  I do like them as I do like Ethan too. Hi Day

OOOOH, I love the name Nick Piretti.  I'm Italian and so I've heard them all.  Will you use Nick again for another story?

The trilogy I'm writing now are classic Italian names of 3 brothers in wine country.  Nick, Joe and Tony Carlino.   Another thing I've been doing is putting a famous face to the names - Tony looks like Hugh Jackman, Joe, like Clark Kent (as in Superman) and Nick looks like Eddie Cibrian.  Not bad, huh?Kiss

Hi Jan

How neat you have part ownership in horses!  I've always wanted to do that, but I don't know enough about horseracing.

Funny, I think I was part of the continuity where Skylar's name was changed to Violet.  My heroine's name was Eliza Fortune, which was a little hard to get used to!

Nicks

I did use Nic (Nicolo) in one of my Dante books.  I'll probably use it again with a "k" in a future book.  I flat-out adore the name.

I think your three Carlinos sound extremely Italian, lol.  I've used...  Marco, Stephano, Alessandro, Luciano, (I'm thinking), Lazzaro, Primo (for the grandfather), Draco (we won't go there), Severo, Gianna, Adriana, Vittorio, Constantine.  Okay, that's all I can remember.  Some are Salvatores.  Some are Dantes.  Some are Romanos.

Still don't know what I'm going to do for a nickname when I get to Draco.  Not sure I'm going to have a choice, lol.  I stuck it on him and now that they want the cousins stories, I'm gonna have to use it.

Hi Day

Your Italianos sound more European and mine are the American version of the names.  For instance, my father's name was Charles, and everyone called him Charlie, but in Italy, he was Carmello.  Guessipe for Joseph, Antonio for Tony.   Where do you set your stories?

My daughter honeymooned in Sienna and she stayed at an incredible villa for one week.  I have amazing pictures of the place so I was thinking of writing my FIRST Italy set story.   Then I'm going to propose a set of cowboys ... sure do miss writing them!

Hey, Charlene

My Italian stories are set in the US, usually San Francisco, because it's my favorite US city (with Seattle a close second).  But I always have it that their parents or grandparents are from Italy and that they all speak Italian at home.  Family will often use full names, friends will shorten to Rafe, Luc, Nic, Sev, etc.

But the first round of Dantes had a little of the Old Country lingering in their voices.  Just a lyrical something, because IMO Italian is so lyrical.  And the heroine in the 4th book, Adriana, was from Italy.

I love the sound of the villa.  You've got to use that.  I like writing cowboy stories, too.  Haven't done a "real" cowboy story in a dog's age.

No time to read

Charlene,

I'm with you.  There just isn't enough time to read all the books, despite wanting to stay current.  It all boils down to priorities and that has to be to get our books written.  Then I want to read my favorite genre or authors and often it isn't the one I write--not because I don't love it/them--I DO!  But because I need a mental break from it.  Sort of cleansing the palate.  So I read YA and Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Suspense for pleasure and in between try and stay current with Desire, particularly my favorite authors.  Okay, now I feel guilty.  Embarassed  Too little time, too many books.

Names are so important,

Names are so important, great names, names that truly fit the character are a big plus. As I started reading this blog I couldn't think of a single name that really stood out. But I realized by the end there is one male name that does stand out for me and that is Nick. There hasn't been a Nick in a story that I didn't end up loving. There was one book I read that had Wolfe as the hero--it was a perfect name for his character (a regency no less). There has also been an Ethan and a Seth that stood out in my mind. Now I really don't think of Seth as being a particularly strong male name, but it was perfect for this particular hero.

With females I like pretty traditional names and I am struggling with some of the unusual names that are cropping up. Yes, I know that not all the names I consider traditional are for other people in other parts of the world. So it is just something I will have to live with. I tend to forget more female names, or I feel their names don't suit the character when I cannot relate to the name. Invariably they become forgettable characters.

Oooops! My Post Script posted first!

Well, I see that the post I attempted to add earlier never made it.  Unfortunately, that was hours ago, and I don't remember all that I said in it.  (Probably a good thing as I have a tendency to be a bit verbose.)

Here are some hero names I like:  Jack, Jake, Josh, Nick, Mick, Rob, Sam, Tom, Luke, Alex, Matt, Will, Rick, Brandon, Chase.  I can't honestly say, for some of them at least, whether I like the names so much because of heroes I've read who had them or whether I like the heroes so much because I like the names.  Maybe a little of both.  Of course, I like for the name to fit the character's background, too.  If he were born in Ireland with no further explanation of his background, it would be jarring for him to be named Gustav Monteverde or something like that.

Some of my favorite heroine names have been:  Kate, Clare, Georgeann (not really crazy about the name, but I loved the character), Jill, Jessica, Jenny, Heather, Allison, Bethany, Jenna, Emma, Emily, Heather.

Day, Another reason I don't read

is that I live in constant fear I might lose my own ideas.  I feel it keeps me fresh to come up with newer ideas, plots and characters and not repeat something another author has done.   And even if the idea is similiar, at least I'd take comfort knowing I didn't "steal" from another author.  It's silly, but I always want to be original and never be swayed by what another author is writing.  Does that make sense?

Hi Shandeen

I read a book whose hero's name was Seth too, and I loved him. It was perfect for him. I wonder if it's the same story?   Also, I'm a sucker for Nicks too.  I did write a Nick Chandler in a Precious Gem from 1999 but everyone called him Chandler, so I was okay with using my Nick again.   Different line, ten years apart, I think I'll get away with it!!

I loved your list of hero and heroine's names.  I like Heather and I used her too, in a Precious Gems book.  Of the 15 heroes names on your list, I've used 6 of them.  One thing I never do, is use a name of someone in my family or a friend, because I wouldn't be able to wrap my head around the character, not being THAT person.   Kiss

Name

I'm one of those people that I believe a name shapes a personality, that certain names act the same.  When writing for myself, I turn on the radio or tv and the first name I hear is that characters name.

When reading, the more unusual, the better, that way there are no preconcieved notions in my head.

I agree 100%.  I read constantly and I do worry that I'll incorporate something I read years before.  My memory of the book is long gone, but I'm concerned that some aspect of the plot has gotten stuck in my brain and I'm afraid it'll pop out as this wonderful new idea that really isn't.  I think all authors who write multiple books a year over many, many years worry about that.  Not sure what we can do about it, other than worry, since we'd all rather write our own ideas that help ourselves to anyone else's.  It's the inadvertent part that makes us a wee bit nervous.

I like

the names Nic(k), Sam, Aiden and Joe, too.  Giovanni is a good one if you're needing Italian (call him Gio).  Reese isn't bad.  I have nephews named Trey, Joshua, Charlie, Chase, Aaron and Lucas, so seeing those names 'bother' me when thinking of a hero in romance terms.  Make sense?  I do like Luke (we call Lucas LuLu or Lukie, so Luke isn't a bother.... for now).  Luke makes me think of Luke Danes on GILMORE GIRLS, and I always thougth he was hot.  Oh, Noah is good, too! (Noah Drake, aka Rick Springfield from General Hospital back in the day....)  Logan is cool.  Brady or Brayden and Connor are nice.

As for heroines, the names aren't a biggie, but I DO have to admit, it's cool whenever (which is rarely) I get to see my name as any female character in a book.  Even if she's a beeoch, it puts me 'in the action'.

April,

Interesting what you mentioned about a heroine having your name.  Almost never does a heroine have my first name (either the shortened form or the whole name), and it's not really that unusual.  I wonder why?   I wonder if others associate it with an old-fashioned name or something.  I guess I'm too close to it to get those feelings about it, but there are some names that sound so wrong on a young child to me because I associate them with someone's great grandmother.

Same is true of songs.  I've never gotten to hear an impassioned song about a woman with my name, with the exception of a song from Rocky Horror Picture Show and a reference in a Weird Al Yankovic song.  I love Weird Al, but I don't think it's every woman's dream to have Weird Al immortalize her name.  Oh, well.  I feel sure you've probably had a song or two dedicated to April, even though I can't think of any right off the bat except Pat Boone's "April Love".  I suppose that doesn't count since I think he's referring to the month there.

But I can totally agree with you that it would be kind of a thrill, particularly if she had the same hair color as I do and/or same eye color.  Guess I'll just have to live without that thrill.

Just to clarify

I didn't mean that I thought April's name was old-fashioned or outdated.  I was questioning my own because I never see it as heroine's names in books or as a love interest's name in songs.  So, I was hypothesizing that perhaps my first name is considered by some to be too outdated.
