Kate Carpenter was an ER nurse at Mercy Medical. Joe Morgan was a marine and a helicopter pilot. Their affair led to Kate becoming pregnant and having a baby boy which she named JT. When Joe's leave was up he abruptly broke things off with Kate without knowing she was pregnant.
She had written him a lettr telling him she had had a baby boy but heard nothing from him. What she didn't know was that just after he had received the letter he was taken captive by the Taliban.
Joe was back home now and out of the service. He was flying medical evacuation helicopters. Mercy Medical was a level three trauma center so Kate was to see a lot of Joe since she worked there.
Kate agreed to teach Joe how to care for JT but she was not willing to marry him. At first she refused to leave JT alone with Joe but changed her mind when she watched him stay with a terrified little girl at the hospital after her mother had been flown to the hospital in serious condition. But things were still not good between them. Joe could not talk to her about his problems and he tried to keep his distance from her.
They had a long way to go before they could love each other and a lot of adventures before the end of the book. I found the book to be very good.
