Where There's Smoke by M. J. Fredrick

This story follows the relationship between Lauren Stokes and her best friend Seth Escamilla. They have known each other from birth. Their parents are best friends. Both sets of parents have always had hopes that both Lauren and Seth would get together and join the two familes more permanently. But their dreams were never known until Lauren and Seth developed feelings for each other that weren't friendship. Both fought the feelings but were unable to stay away from each other.

When Lauren discovers a secret regarding their parents, she is in a dilemma whether to mention it to Seth or not. Seth has issues regarding his ability to stay faithful to a woman and this leads to distance between the pair. He believes that unfaithfulness is in his genes. Lauren doesn't undestand his illogical feelings and tries to get him to understand but he fails to.

When the secret is revealed to all the two families are left devastated. It creates distance between the two families and how they treat each other. I enjoyed some of the story, but thought the romantic relationship between Lauren and Seth moved too fast. Within a few pages into the story both were sleeping together. It would have been better if the unspoken tension between the two would have lasted longer than it originally had.

I thought that Lauren was a courageous woman who fought for what she wanted but Seth wasn't a strong person. He didn't try to be what he wanted to be to Lauren and just gave up at the first sign of trouble. I didn't like Seth's character because I didn't agree with the way he dealt with the secret that he discovered. If I say anymore then I would have to reveal the secret and that wouldn't be nice for potential readers of the story. It would spoill the suspense for them so will leave this reveiw here. This book is a good first-time read but not for a repeat reading.
