Which Countries Are Your Favorite Locations in Romance Novels?

You can list more than one in order of preference. Mine are:

  1. Italy
  2. Greece
  3. Ireland
  4. Australia
  5. England
  6. Canada
  7. USA Southwest, any  ranch or farm location

You might give the country you live in now.  You can tell I favor foreign locations. I wonder if everyone is that way or if most fans like stories from their own country. It will be OK to make two lists if you want to separate Historical Romances from the Rest. My list stays the same whether it is contemporary or historical romances.

What the Deal on France?

Hi FF:

What is the deal on French locations?

I did a search of eHarlequin and found only two books using “French” and “Frenchman”. I added two more books when I used “France”. I added two more when I used “Paris”.

Why are there so few books that take place in France?  French is the language of love. Paris and Venice would be considered the two most romantic cities in the world. Does this make sense?

(Consider: There were 10 books about "sheiks"Surprised. I got two pages of books when I used “Italian” and two pages when I used “Greek”.)

This just does not seem to make sense! Do you think authors don't like France? Surprised

               Thanks,

France

Apparently - for some reason - French heroes aren't popular and the French particularly don't like reading them. I had an Aussie surgeon with French parentage in The Surgeon's Meant-To-Be Bride  - Guillaume Remy. As France is the biggest market for medical romance we need to heed this preference.

I know there are a few out there though but Greeks, Italians and Sheiks are the most popular.

Is this a "Chicken or Egg" Situation?

Hi All:

Is this like the chicken or egg situation?  Do we have so few French location books because readers don't like them or do reader’s not like them because they have not had much opportunity to read them?   I think if Lucy Gordon were writing her books with French locations, I’d still read them all.

Thanks,

Vince

Okay, nobody hit me, but

Okay, nobody hit me, but France doesn't immediately grab me as a location for a romance - no good reason why, maybe I like other Americans picture Frenchmen as either Gerard Depedeiu (sp?)  or as slight men.  I know total stereotype, but generally aren't many of our romantic heros somewhat stereotypical - the rugged, quiet rancher from Montana, the businessman from New York, the Greek Tycoon, etc.  That doesn't mean I wouldn't read a book based in France, I loved Lost Calling and it was based in France (although now that I think about it the hero was English - hmm, have I read a book with a French hero, may have to look in my pile.)  So I guess my point is maybe the stereotypes are working against France as a romance location.

But Cady…

Paris is the most romantic city in the world. And Frenchmen are reputed to be the world's most seductive. Why, when I came here for the first time, everyone told me to make sure that I took a Parisian lover… for the experience. French men tend to like women. Any women. That was what I liked most in Paris. I would get ogled in the street. Me, who hadn't ever been ogled in my life.

France...

I LOVE France, it is so atmospheric!  And yes, Paris is fab, but so too is Carcassonne and Rocamadour and, and...so many of the smaller villages in Brittany and Normandy, Turenne for example.     That is why many scenes in my books take place in France.  And my heroes are often French or part French.  That accent...   OK, I am writing about the eleventh century, but France is magical in any era.

But then again so too is England, Scotland, Italy, Portugal, Mexico...

Best wishes, Carol, who would like to travel more...and then some more...

Oops sorry Sadhbh about

Oops sorry Sadhbh about Rhys, my first thought was that he was French, but then I remembered that he had a church somewhere in Britian, thus the English thing.

FF - I didn't say it was logical.  France is an absolutely beautiful & romantic country (or so it looks from the travelogues).  The descriptions of places in the south of France, Paris, etc - and I, too, have heard the French lover thing, but still when I think of a romantic man, I don't think of France.  I think part of it is that we haven't had a good male sex symbol from France in a while.  I didn't say I was logical.

Since we have started this discussion, does anyone have a good romance that they can recommend with a French hero?  I have some historicals set in France or with French heros, but I don't have any contemporaries.

Armand in "La Dame Aux Camelias"

Hi Cady:

The last book I read with a French hero was Armand in   "La Dame Aux Camelias" by fils Dumas.

This was so good I read it twice in a row then bought it in French and read it again in French.  My wife and I actually put flowers on Marguerite’s grave in Paris. It was raining and the grave was on a hill and very hard to find. We needed help from the caretaker to find it. It was sad but very romantic. The only other book I liked enough to read in French was  Raymond Queneau's  "Zazie dans le metro". Of course, "La Dame Aux Camellias" is a Romantic novel and not a Romance novel. In Romantic novels the hero or heroine usually die. There was no HEA.

Are English and Welsh both British?

HI Sadhbh

English and Welsh are NOT the same thing. But would it be correct to say that English and Welsh are both British?  I am not sure Americans use the term British correctly.

Thanks,

Vince

I don't have favorite

I don't have favorite location. I like all the New Orleans books because NO is such a unique heritage.  After Katrina, I like authors keeping New Orleans before us.  Wouldn't mind reading some set in Iceland or Greenland or Malta or some other less obvious place.  Historicals in those countries would be intriguingto me.

Locations

I just saw this question, so am putting my two-cents worth in --

I love to read historical English settings (not so much contemporary) -- I'm a big fan of regencies, but also like the gothic settings.  Also, I like historicals set in Australia and the old west in the US.

For contemporaries, the setting is less important to me.  Whether urban or country, though, I like a 'tight-knit' cast of characters. I like to see romance happening in a community, whether the community is an urban work place or a coffee shop in a small town. I tend to think those communities happen more often in small towns, but I really don't know.
